If that was the only part Ian covered I would totally agree with you, but he still can't just laugh off or try to play along after those rape comments and recording others without their consent. I think his only options were what other people have said. He trys to let it blow over and ignore everything, or he apologies and owns up to the fact he said some nasty shit.
