Because we have an infection of people called chavs who like to crash a lot.
Minaly because of personal injury claims, the sueing culture has made its way over to us from America. 6 of my mates have claimed whiplash, all getting about £1000 each, 4 of them were in the same car and the others were 2 individual accidents, none of them badly injured at all. Insurance companies encourage you to claim. The money comes from the insurance companies, not the driver so they are losing a lot of money which means they have got to pass this cost on. The trouble is, many people say they wouldn't put in a false claim on principle, but when the opportunity for an easy £1000 comes along, who can resist? None of my friends underwent medical exams at all, they cost was settled in a matter of weeks. Then you have got a high number of uninsured drivers which again, insurance companies make a huge loss on. They don't make a lot of cash off older people, say you are 40 and pay £300 a year for your £10,000 car. You are driving it for 3 years and you have a crash. In those 3 years you have paid them £900, they may have to fork out up to £7,000 for that car so they have instantly lost £6,100 from that customer. The only way they can easily make this money back is to charge young drivers through the roof.
There will have to come a time where they put a cap on prices, they are costing people off the road, young people can't afford these premiums, nor petrol prices, no wonder more people are driving without insurance when the penalty for being caught is a short ban, points on your license and £250 fine.
There just needs to be stricter penalties for driving uninsured and there needs to be laws against stupid lawsuits.
I've looked up the price for a VW polo with my Dad as the main driver. £2300 at Halifax. not bad at all compared to the £5400 i was getting for a clio.

This is the car.
Halifax: "Unfourtunatly we are unable to offer you a quote online"
lol
Jesus christ, I knew that insurance was more expensive in the UK, but you're paying over six times as much as I do for my car, and I have a larger engine in mine.
How do new drivers get the money to drive? :psyduck:
So heres the latest. I've just this minute got off the phone from tescos and cancelled my policy. They are refunding me £319.93 from what i havent used from the last monthly installment, so that was a nice surprise!
But i will be taking a new policy out from elephant today for £3386.37. The only catch with that is you need to pay it upfront. So my dad will be transferring £3386 in to my bank for me to do that today. Instant banking ftw right? I will buy that, and he is wacking that money on his still open house morgage account to get me a nice low 2% interest rate rather than a shit 30% one i was paying before on top of 5300 quid.
I think that all just made sense... Needless to say my monthly repayments will be going to my dad now, of £282 instead of my previous £500.
I'd call that a good success really. Still a lot but it's nowhere near as bad as before right.
Edit: And this is a special 10 month policy by Elephant car insurance. At the end of 10 months i will get my 1 years no claims, i will be 19 and hopefully my car insurance will go down a lot fingers crossed!
Read the small print carefully, some of those 10 months policies are only applicable if you renew to the same company.
It's way more if you get comprehensive insurance. Just look at third party, theft and fire unless you have a really expensive car and you think you'll cause an accident
anything over 1.5k is rediculous
Took out a new policy today with Elephant for £3250. Third party fire and theft with my parents as named drivers, me as the main.

wrong sunshine, mine is cheaper fully comp
I'm fully comp, got zero years no-claims, I'm 17, I have a 1.6L and I'm on £3,500~ a year, you've been had.
For a '10 plate Ford Fiesta with my stepdad as the named driver it was about £3500, it's gone down to about £2500.
My mum is £650 on the same car.
Mine is 1000 fully comp all mods declared on 300hp car. wonderful.
it was 600 2 years ago though.
Joe, what are you, 21, 22? How do you insure that GT4 for so little? Do you live in Surrey down the road from John Terry or something?!
For the Lude, which is a group 17 car I was quoted £2,200 fully comp with 2 years NCB and 3 points. I'm paying £1400 TPFT, probably won't drop an awful lot this year either. That's without declaring the mods (stock parts are in the loft, just in case :v:)
23 driving for nearly 6 years. live in the lake district which helps, safest post code rating

Over the last few years there seems to have been massive insurance hikes for young drivers that i seen to have missed.
when i first passed, the average premium was about 800 quid for your average lad in typical small car. i paid 1200 because i had a 1.8. 2 years later my younger friends paid an average of 2000. Now it's just insane, i don't know how anyone can do it now,
[editline]24th February 2011[/editline]
By the way the four will be for sale in august, so you can buy it if you want :)
If I buy my friend's 2 litre turbo diesel.. it is cheaper than a 1 litre corsa or equivalent at about £4000. wtf. I'm so doing that lolol.

are you a wizard?
Fully comp, 1.8, 28, been driving since I was 21 - £900
I don't have any no claims bonus because I was too lazy to get the certificate from my old insurer

They've always tempted me but they are getting older and older as the years go by and more expensive to maintain I bet?
I've got a Mk1 Punto.
Now just £855 a year for insurance, and it will probably go down again in august.
Fully comp, 1.0 2002 Suzuki Swift GLS, 21
Been driving 3 years
£1000 a year
just interested in who has kept the same car since being 17, and is 21 or something now, would be nice to see some comparisons from 17-21
What's even more ridiculous is that even though have not driven since passing my test 3 years ago, and in my life have driven for a total of about 10 hours, I could get insured for a 2006 Renault Clio for less than £800
And I pretty much can't even drive

Nearly 21 and on my 3rd car. My first car at 17 was a 2000 W Reg Vauxhall Corsa 1.2. Wrote that off after 18 months, didn't bother involving insurance so bought another 51reg 1.4 Vauxhall Corsa SXI out the savings, drove that for another year then bought a Honda Prelude 2.2 last October, truly happy with this car so plan on keeping it for a few years.

hmm, they're expensive to fix yes. depends whether you buy a good one or not. i'd consider mine a good one, no rattles, engine sounds whisper quiet, all fluids are clean, no knocks, clutch has been done at a cost of 800 quid, superstrut suspension has been done recently at a cost of 1200 quid.
you can get 'em for 2grand, but be prepared to spend that again fixing it up.
Wow, insurance across the pond sucks.
Im 19, have been driving for 1.5 years. I drive an 08 civic si which has 200HP a 6spd trans. and is the 6th worst car in america to insure.
I still only pay ~180$(~£111) for insurance.

per year?
up yours :(
per year?
up yours :(
No per month, but that is still only £1332. And at the 6 month mark the rate goes down. So after July it will be cheaper. And then in 2012 it will be cheaper again.
And don't forget that its the 6th worst car in america to insure.
Seriously now, how do new drivers do it? I'm shelling out £5,800 a year on car insurance currently. Thats £500 per month as i pay monthly with some crap 30% APR. I'm on an £18k salary which is excellent for my age of 18, but i'm really struggling to keep up the premiums now.
How do people do it seriously? If i didn't have to pay all this money i would be a rich man. I've looked in to everything. Even insurers that stick trackers in your car to monitor which times you drive, but they come up more expensive than my tescos insurance.
I have pass plus and all that rubbish. No accidents. The only thing that seems to be going against me is that im an 18 Male with only 4 months driving experience. It's really depressing
Edit: I'm actually considering just getting rid of it altogether. The cost is just obscene. Oh and it's a Ford Focus 1.6 by the way.
I got a quote for £25,000 for a vauxhall corsa 1.2L (55)
Seriously, what the fuck?
