The 10,000 Spartans at the end of 300 was the Battle of Plataea, which occurred at the end of the war. This is the battle of Artemisium which occurred at the same time as the Battle of Thermopylae. In fact, both battles were part of the same larger operation to stop the Persian advance. So this is more of a side-quel than a sequel.

Yeah, I was about to say what Mjolnir here says. Basically, imagine if a second saving private ryan were made, but following paratroopers dropping in Normandy. Same timeframe, same war, just different place.
