Since it's in America, they brought a firetruck because they are traditionally first response vehicles believe it or not.
Not entirely sure on the particulars, but there's always a firetruck at the scene of an accident before the ambulance, and usually before the police.

I got hit by a car riding my bike last year! Only difference is that it hit me head on going 35mph.
That was painfullllll the next day.
The vicodin was nice, though.
I once was using a rental bike at the beach and I was riding on a little bike path. I went berserk and started going as fast as I could when all of a sudden my bike chain broke and I couldnt brake(pedal backwards to brake).
I almost got hit by a car because I couldnt slow down and it took me a while to slow down using my feet.
If I ever get hit by a car and still be conscious, I'd freakin' spit and splatter my blood on to the car and the driver if he gets near me.

And its because the ambulances are so busy and are always out of the house going from run to run while the engine and truck are at the house. But you're right about the EMT thing, many are becoming EMTs now.
I crashed into a drunk driver to save a family from being hit.
I then proceeded to pull my self from the wreck and administer CPR to the drunk asshole.
I was taken to court over reckless driving. Fucking backwards justice system.

I've come flying off a bike before, they are lethal shit, luckly i was only scratched and wasn't impaled by the handle bars when it it me from about 5 foot drop.

this reminds me of a story my dad told me. He was pedalling his bike to go some place, and he just got down this hill. So he's hauling ass and a dude up the street is getting out of his car. The guy opens the door, hears my dad come flying down the hill and he jumps out of the way, my dad slams into the door of the car.

If I remember correctly its because they can assist in any situation that isn't explicitly criminal. They're trained EMT's as well and they can assist victims before the EMTs get there, and if its for example a car accident the only reason the EMTs need to be there is to transport the victims to the hospital.
Like 4 of my friends have been hit while riding bikes. Not new to me, join the club.
Get a accident lawyer, win lots of money. America fuck yeah.
