In the UK it's illegal to ride on the pavement apart from where it's marked and I believe you have to dismount there or you can get fined, not that anyone gives anything like that a blind bit of notice where I live but I have noticed in cities when there's actually cycle lanes people do tend to use them.
I was almost hit by a car once. We were walking along the road (no sidewalk), then a car suddenly appeared around the corner and hit my friend, though he had his bike next to him, so that took most of the force. The man ran over to us and asked if we were okay, while the woman just yelled "Honey, I think our car go a dent!". Seriously? You almost drove over two people and you think about the car?

Some proper bikes do have a gearing system which allows you to pedal backwards. They tend to be those thin race-type bikes meant for street use (as opposed to off-road use). It's not just a babby-bike thing.

even if it's technically illegal to ride on the sidewalk, I still do it here because riding on the road seems too risky. the bike lane is only like two feet wide, and you have cars coming by you at 40-50 mph.

Yeah. To be honest, cycle lanes are pointless unless they're those ones which are separated from the road by a little concrete kerb. The ones that are just painted on might as well not be there - there's no added safety from magic green paint or whatever.
In places like Berlin they have cycle paths all along the pavement, but that's even worse than them not being there. The cyclists get way too confident, since they have the backing of the law and whatnot, and won't hesitate to run you over if you step into the path by accident (and it's no difficult feat).

when driving around a cyclist you have to get in the left side of your lane to make sure you don't clip them

So guys, I got a shitty story about what happened to me the other day. I was just filling up my car at the gas station and had just gone in to pay the attendant. She was really fucking hot. I mean really hot. Anyway I flirted a little and payed for my gas and went on my way peacefully. But before I could get out, some punk-cyclist came and smashed into my motor! What the fuck? It went sorta like this.

Ao this punk-ass cyclist was coming along, and he obviously expected me to stop for him. Bullshit! I got places to go and people to see. I need to get to work and feed my family you know!

So I pull out and the kid doesn't stop! He smashes right into my right door leaving a massive dent. Who the fuck is going to pay for that? The insurance won't pay for it! So some shmuck (me) will have to cover it. Goddamn.

That kid must sure have been going fast to do that much damage.
I do feel sorry for the punk though, he busted up his leg and went to hospital, and his bike got trashed. I also heard from his family when I paid my condolences to them about what happened (carefully lying it was my fault, after all, the kid has enough on his plate without angry parents wondering why he purposely smashed my car in) that it was his birthday next week.
I even sent him a card. It should arrive soon.
