It is undeniable that there are some 'true' otherkin out there, and their views can be regarded as batshit even if they don't subscribe to some of the more extreme ideals. Examples weird stuff in all facets of the internet are usually brought up by the people out to make fun of the concept or bait people into watching videos/rating their accounts/boosting their e-peen, getting their moment of validation
look at this thread, 2/3rds of the posts are people mocking the concept with "hurdur I'm an anticismollusk" posts, imagine if these same guys were average reddit dips who want to farm upvotes, or 4channers who want to bait kids into defending nonsense so they'd make fools of themselves. Fun at others' expense and making bullshit up for the sake of a good joke is the core of the internet, it's all but guaranteed that a vast majority of the examples that make it to light are trolls shitposting and reacting to other trolls.
Obviously there really are people with various forms of dysphoria (did I say that before), but we've always had examples of weird outlets for kids who don't feel like they're fitting in, from awkward deviant art OCs to what basically amounts to making their own fictional self-character just to let loose. I'm pretty convinced that most of these people are genuine. They would literally change their gender and sexual identity pretty much every few weeks. When I first knew her, she was "demi romantic", bisexual, and female. Then it progressed to being demisexual and a demi-girl and then she was just "femme agender" and I don't even know. She went from she/her pronouns to she/her & they/them, and now "Xe/xyr" is apparently the most recent set. At some point she decided she was "hobbit-kin" and justified it with a combination of a coping mechanism for mental illness and multiverse theory (lol).
At first, she was pretty easy to get along with and we connected pretty well. Shortly after, there was a lot of complaining about how cis-het white males are ruining society, etc. I tried to ignore most of that since we got along so well otherwise, but since I don't buy into that school of thought, we eventually got into an argument one time too many. I decided it would be best to not continue our social relationship and haven't spoken to her since.
It's kinda sad really, because she has some legitimate history with self-harm and eating disorders. It could very well be a coping mechanism or some way to "fit in" with her online community. Regardless, I refuse to accept the premise that having such a detached view of reality can be anything but unhealthy, and people who promote these things are doing more harm then good.

Not sure if I deleted it from my first post or it got lost in translation, but I (had) mentioned that many people who do this use it as a form of escapism from their norms, to create a fictional character (an OC, even) to drive and have social interactions as to dissociate reality a bit. It's a social ice breaker for many people to let loose with and just be themselves in a somewhat open environment, which isn't exactly the kind of thing that sparks rampant asshole social justice brigades like all the examples we see up on a the drama pedestal

I have thought about it, it still doesn't make sense to say it's just sock puppets and trolls fueling an endlessly stupid event. They'd be putting in more effort than the people they're mocking, I get people go to extraordinary limits to have their fun with other people, but to suggest the almost entire movement is non existant is kinda hard for me to just accept and believe.

Anyone can have a stupid idea; the fact the no one calls on these ideas when they are first pitched as ya know, not quite salient, leads to reinforcement of the behavior in the first place.
