I disagree on the "lack of confidence". By [sp] killing han, they demonstrated that they're not going to be reliant on the previous films imo. Han is one of, if not the most loved and iconic central character of the original trilogy, and having the confidence of killing him shows that they are confident in the new characters they have crafted - and rightly so. [/sp] the new characters are pretty much immediately likeable, relatable.
For me one of the weakest points of the film was Carrie Fisher. I think they changed her character too substantially. They changed her from being a stubborn independent don't take no guff character to a matronly mother figure that's way more understanding than she used to be. Yeah may be character development but after just having seen the original again recently the change in her character is night and day.
The other thing imo is the romance of the film. It doesn't feel believable. The pace of the entire film makes it feel as if it takes place only over a few days, making the sudden connection between two characters who have literally just met feel a little forced and definitely quite unnecessary.
Romance in the original trilogy developed over time, which was aided by the epic scope of the trilogy. That's not the case in episode 7.
Well the romance in TFA comes from [sp]Finn basically falls for Rey cause she's the first "real" girl that he meets and then Rey seems to be getting feelings for him back in the end because he shows up to try and save her after she's captured. And not for a reward like in the OT, he's there because he actually wants to save her.[/sp]
Not that rushed imo. Besides, we don't even know for sure how into it they both are.
[sp]Word is that JJ was forced to reluctantly cut more than 30 minutes of hardcore fucking from the movie to get PG13[/sp]

I'll wait for the Special Edition

[Sp]As well as the reveal that they're siblings[/sp]
Gotta get those Original Trilogy callbacks.
Yeah I'm not sure where people got a "romance" vibe. It's a friendship built off of shared experience.
[sp]Near the beginning it was obvious Finn had taken a fancy to Rey by the way he always tried to hold her hand and protect her, and she REALLY didn't want him to leave her considering that she'd known him for a day. I think the potential for a romance is there, but it could easily go either way over the next two films.[/sp]

[sp]She was super annoyed he was doing that though. And they both were probably the first friend's they'd both ever had. At the very least the first friend she'd had in some time. He was also supposedly a member of the resistance and she hated the FO so he was a way to strike back at an entity known solely for pain and hardship. Yeah he fell for her in like 10 seconds flat but she was the first girl to give a single shit about him. And come on she's cute af.
And as for Finn and Poe? Friendship forged in conflict. He needed out of the FO, Poe needed away from the FO, both hated the FO, and both saw the other as a means to accomplish mutual goals. He was also the first person ever to treat him as a person, the person who named him, and they both found out that they actually work pretty well with each other. I don't get a homosexual romance vibe at all, I get a brotherhood/partner/bromance thing. They remind me of Esposito and Ryan in Castle. Best friends, would lay life down in an instant, do anything for the other, but be for real they aren't romantically attracted even one iota.[/sp]

Just rewatched the film, [sp]there's also how Finn talks about being a big shot in the resistance to impress her, and later asks if she wants to go back because she's got a cute boyfriend.[/sp]
My basic assumption is that [sp]Finn might have the Force too, albeit to really low degrees compared to Rey and the Skywalkers, so he might feel a compulsion beyond just being a cute girl he just met. Which would also aid why he seemed real empathetic during the opening slaughter and why Kylo noticed him briefly seemingly and then shrugged it off.[/sp]
Abrams always uses the same writer Roberto Orzi (Transformers, Amazing Spider Man 2, The Island, etc) in all of his projects usually and he sucks dick.
Because of his consistent usage of that guy, JJ probably just sucks at plots since it seems so natural to himself and somehow it extended to VII, although not as bad. Basically all the problems of weak character motivations, rehashing/unfocused plot, and ridiculous pacing issues stem from that writer in the industry.
True, but in this case he wasn't involved.
Can you guys just not enjoy a good fucking movie for once instead of having to nitpick it to fucking death till its a mere shadow of its former self?
True, but in this case he wasn't involved.
It just means to me that JJ as a person is use to writers who put out schlock.

Yeah it's really strange how a person gets more motherly after becoming [sp]a literal mother[/sp] :v:
you guys realize that if the movie went into detail about
"oh well the political factions are this and this and this and here are there motivations and hurr durr the remnants of the trade federation"
not only would it create more holes than it plugged up, but it would reintroduce the same boring shit that the prequels were hated for, right?

Im guessing hardcore alien fucking from the space bar scene right?

I think just a single scene or even an extra paragraph in the title crawl would've helped a lot. No need to turn the whole movie into political bullshit but just maybe clear up what this "Resistance" actually is in relation to the Republic. Like just a scene where Leia asks the Republic for more funds because she's worried about the increasing power of the First Order or something.
I wouldn't even mind a scene in the senate, cause at least we would be able to see [sp]some of the new Republic for more than three seconds[/sp].
Or maybe just scrap the idea entirely and replace the Resistance with just the Republican army, and have them become the Resistance after [sp]the Republic has been destroyed[/sp].

There's a middle ground between pointless details and leaving your audience completely clueless.

I don't buy this. She was clearly still herself (that is the original trilogy version of herself) while [sp] with han. That is the reason they broke up - she was dont take no guff and he was all guff. Just having a kid shouldn't be enough of a reason for her character to experience a paradigm shift to all nice and motherly, especially after losing said child to the dark side. [/sp]

If you were that full of botox you would have no choice but to stick with the face you got, which in this case happened to be matronly.

That's why I appreciate the fact that in TFA, [sp]Han and Leia had been together but split up at some point. Realistically, you know that's what was bound to have happened between them. [/sp]

General Hux said this though
[sp]Today is the end of the Republic. The end of a regime that acquiesces to disorder. At this very moment in a system far from here, the New Republic lies to the galaxy while secretly supporting the treachery of the rogues of the Resistance. This fierce machine which you have built, upon which we stand will bring an end to the Senate, to their cherished fleet. All remaining systems will bow to the First Order and will remember this as the last day of the Republic! [/sp]
[editline]27th December 2015[/editline]
so it's not like they never said anything about it ever.

Not nit-picking, but no one's mentioned the joke yet: He actually says [sp]"Not long from now, in a system not far from here...[/sp]
Does it sound familiar?
Idk I got the quote off of IMDB blame them :v:
I like the movie. Sure it was A New Hope: Redux, but it was over all enjoyable.
Though I will say that Rei was the worst part of the movie. Not depth at all compared to the other characters.

She has just as much depth if not more than the other new characters with yet-to-be-explained history.
Her performance stole the show imo

I found Finn to be a much more compelling protagonist. He feels a lot more flawed and human, while Rey just seems to be really good at everything she tries to do [sp]with the possible exception of lightsaber fighting, but then she magically gets good because THE FORCE[/sp].

I think part of it is [sp]she's just supposed to be a quick learner because force? I guess??[/sp] I dunno, that's just me. I didn't care too much for her and would pretty easily say she's my least favorite character in the movie.
Wasn't there a cut bit of the movie that explained that Rey learned how to fly from an old flight simulator or something?
I don't know about that for certain but I remembered hearing about it.

She has no flaws whatsoever, and excels at everything she does.
Finn is a wah-wah who just wants to get laid

To be fair, that was what Luke was in A New Hope- somehow instantly knows lightsaber fighting, turrets and xwing piloting and destroys the death star in a single run. It took another movie to have him show weakness, which is what i feel Rey will go through as well.
