There is no scene in the 6 movies where a good blaster would have been worse (in the right hands).
For a Jedi or Sith, lightsabers can deflect blaster shots really really easy.
I pretty much thought that's how it works. The thing is if you use it as flexibly and as fast as we've seen won't you injure yourself with the mini ones? Also, it's a film.
When using sword with a hilt like that you don't actually get to touch the side things, there are some moves where you do, mainly for big swords but I doubt a lightsaber wielder would do that. Not to mention this sith dude doesn't look like a newbie and probably knows how to use his sword.
Also you guys realize that there ARE crossguard sabers in-universe right? They're not just making this up for the movie, they do exist.
Also you guys realize that there ARE crossguard sabers in-universe right? They're not just making this up for the movie, they do exist.
there are but the second beam is projected at a 45 degree angle away from the hand.
How about we wait for the movie and see how he uses the sword?
The thing is if you use it as flexibly and as fast as we've seen won't you injure yourself with the mini ones?
a magic space ninja that can predict the immediate future and deflect bullets traveling the speed of light purpose-built and practiced with that sword for upwards of 30 years and he's going to be a complete bumbling idiot that takes a swing and catches himself in the arm right away
For a Jedi or Sith, lightsabers can deflect blaster shots really really easy.
Vader blocked a blaster shot with the Force alone.
Vader blocked a blaster shot with the Force alone.
Actually explained in the now non-canon EU as his glove was literally indestructible and was constructed to serve as an eternal sign of the Empire's everlasting power.
Actually explained in the now non-canon EU as his glove was literally indestructible and was constructed to serve as an eternal sign of the Empire's everlasting power.
Thank fuck it's non canon then, because that sounds fucking stupid.
there are but the second beam is projected at a 45 degree angle away from the hand.
But the point still stands that it's a thing that exist, not to mention that the saber shown is just the one, every saber is custom tooled and build to and by the wielder, unless they're mass produced, they're all unique. Like a fingerprint of each force user.
Actually explained in the now non-canon EU as his glove was literally indestructible and was constructed to serve as an eternal sign of the Empire's everlasting power.
Most of his armor was made out of a material that couldn't be cut by lightsabers or damaged by blaster fire, if i recall.
Thank fuck it's non canon then, because that sounds fucking stupid.
wasn't there something in KOTOR regarding fancy swords made of something that withstand contact with lightsabers and rifle blasts? What's to stop the manufacturing of some ridiculous expensive body armor for your combat-ready figurehead? at any rate, literally everything except for the movies is considered non-canon EU, so by that logic whatever the movie does is 100% kosher in the universe so we'll see how things go
wasn't there something in KOTOR regarding fancy swords made of something that withstand contact with lightsabers and rifle blasts? What's to stop the manufacturing of some ridiculous expensive body armor for your combat-ready figurehead?
There were several materials that could withstand lightsabers, like Mandalorian Iron and cortosis (which iirc is what Vader's armor is reinforced with), to name a few. Also I don't know, there really isn't anything to stop that. I guess a lot of people would see it as weakness or cowardice?

There's a moment in Empire during the lightsaber duel where Luke strikes Vader's shoulder plate. They sort of explain away why it didn't just cut through him by saying his armor is made of cortosis. Or something like that.
I wish I could watch what you guys are talking about But it's been taken down everywhere, and Hulu doesn't want to stream to Canada.
I wish I could watch what you guys are talking about But it's been taken down everywhere, and Hulu doesn't want to stream to Canada.
slightly zoomed in and the audio's a bit rough (and it plays the section twice) but it's watchable [editline]4th December 2014[/editline] fuckin' https screwing me over
Updated the op with some working links, but they'll probably get taken down soon.
For a Jedi or Sith, lightsabers can deflect blaster shots really really easy.
2:36 Yea, they can block out blasters, but well if you have a ton of guys you're still a dead jedi.
Aaaaalso don't forget Bobba Fett's wrist grapple cable in episode IV. Its really hard to tell in the movie, but when Luke gets grappled by Fett he deflects a laser bolt fired from the Hutt barge into the cable. This is corroborated by the audio drama that came out before the movies and upon which the movies were based. Fett says "lets see you cut through that, Jedi" So lightsaber resistant materials have always been a thing, even before prequel and OT canon.

I think the lightsaber is dumb because its required so much explanation as to what the hell it is.

Even a master of Form V: Shien would have a hard time doing the "living" thing with that.
This. Even a master of Form V: Shien would have a hard time doing the "living" thing with that.
how does "an entire firing squad takes casualties just trying to shoot one guy" help the original argument that a blaster is a superior option to something that provably deflected several shots successfully? besides, it's not like they were forbidden from using blasters, it's just the blade is a weapon of choice kind of like a ritual/heritage thing. It's a neat tool that does things you can't normally do without special equipment, like carving through heavy blast doors and pretty much negating the efforts of opposition in small encounters I just don't see why nobody thought of lightgunblades
I think the lightsaber is dumb because its required so much explanation as to what the hell it is.
yea but its a cool laser sword so who cares? all the technical mumbo jumbo just exists so that people who really care can establish a verisimilar universe for themselves
I think the lightsaber is dumb because its required so much explanation as to what the hell it is.
Yeah! The more explaining required, the dumber it is, right? Like evolutionary processes and computer programming.
Yeah! The more explaining required, the dumber it is, right? Like evolutionary processes and computer programming.
A lightsaber is a fictional object that requires fictional theory to explain. As you explain more of this fictional theory it starts to sound dumber and dumber. That's why things that are barely explained are often(not always) more fun
