We know that east is stuck in middle ages, nothing new.
Religion is not inherently bad, people saying that need to calm down and think about things in perspective. What IS inherently bad is to allow religious rules to determine the laws of any governing body. Separation of Church and State is a flawless system. People can personally be influenced by their own creeds, but that's the extent of it.
Theocracies are usually bound by laws that exist for no logical reason according to anyone who is religion-neutral. If the only reason is "God says so" with no reason to back it up, then it shouldn't affect everyone.
Ultimately, religions SHOULD be and remain personal compasses of philosophy. They offer the human ideal that good and evil are more than words, and that the good will always win the fight in the long run. Hope for the world, hope for ourselves after death. For the responsible, it keeps people sane and inspires them to do right by their fellow man.
But of course, this is a world full of irresponsible people with irrational desires and prejudices, and they delight finding any justification for being willingly selfish, ignorant and backward, even if the only reason is "God says so". That shouldn't be enough for them and it certainly shouldn't be enough for us.
