This is trying to be so self-aware it hurts. That quote about maps being kept in the vault is straight up bullshit either way if its a joke or not.
$10, the same price as 4 keys directly from the store, just to get into comp, a feature that Overwatch offers completely for free any time for anyone?
I feel that this is all just an elaborate plan just to get people into installing the two-factor authentication garbage.
it's actually a 40 dollar fee but nice try.
Unreleased maps.
They're very clearly referring to custom maps played on community servers. They haven't tested and rejected thousands of maps.

Ah yes the feature that a $60 dollar game offers for free compared to a free game that charges $10 for it.
This is trying to be so self-aware it hurts. That quote about maps being kept in the vault is straight up bullshit either way if its a joke or not.
I'm pretty sure they're not "keeping maps in the vault" but there have been thousands of maps they've made over the years that have just not made it to release for tons of reasons, be it technical or just they were shit.

And TF2 is also totally free to play so what is the big deal about them charging a little for comp mode? Give a cheap BJ and get $10 if you don't want to/can't for some reason hook your phone up to your Steam account.
There is nothing "garbage" about two factor authentication. It keeps accounts safer. Way safer. As much as I don't like Valve strong arming their way into making people use it, it still makes accounts security better.
some of us had to actually pay for TF2
So wait. Despite me buying TF2 years before i'm going to have to pay 10$ just to access a competitive mode?
What? That isn't fair.
In what fucking world is that not fair? If you buy a game, you're not then owed every single other new thing they add to the game, especially if that thing is added almost 10 fucking years later.

This seems to be more of a nod to custom maps. You know, not unreleased maps but just like general user-made maps from the ones made for serious gameplay to joke maps like koth_wubwubwub.

As stated many, many times before; TF2 =/= OW. TF2 is free while OW is 40 bucks. Not only do you get basically everything in TF2 exept competitive for free, the competitive mode is 1/4 cheaper than OW itself.
some of us had to actually pay for TF2
And I'm one of those people, but I'm also not going to complain about the $40 I spent almost 9 years ago when I bought the Orange Box.
That trailer was pretty shit, having a competitive mode is pretty cool though.
It's important to note that the update isn't just competitive matchmaking, it's a two day update, tomorrow will feature enormous amounts of rebalances as stated by B4nny, a TF2 pro player who visited Valve and saw the update weeks before release:

What is it with Overwatch players constantly feeling the need to make it known that they like Overwatch better?
What is it with Overwatch players constantly feeling the need to make it known that they like Overwatch better?
While I have yet to see it here on Facepunch I know there are people who will come into chats about Overwatch claiming TF2 is still the better of the two games.
What is it with Overwatch players constantly feeling the need to make it known that they like Overwatch better?
Comparing an almost 10 year old game to a hardly few month old game makes them feel special I guess.
What is it with Overwatch players constantly feeling the need to make it known that they like Overwatch better?
The same thing that was with TF2 fans sandbagging Overwatch as a "SHITTY TF2 CLONE ;~;" ever since it was announced.
Lets not act like both sides don't have their idiots here.
Makes me want to play TF2 again, that trailer has so much more personality than Overwatch
its nice but I feel like this really should have all came out years ago when csgo came out and it had matchmaking from the start. really slow on valves part, clearly reactionary because of overwatch (even though its playerbase hasnt dropped since overwatches release) and probably wont do much for the games population in general.
Comparing an almost 10 year old game to a hardly few month old game makes them feel special I guess.
The thing of it is Overwatch brought Comp in like about a month after release.
It took Valve and the TF2 team over 7-8 years to finally get off it's ass and put an official comp into the game. Something that should have been implemented when TF2 went F2P.
doesn't this prevent smurfs/alt accounts used by cheaters from accessing comp tho
You can just buy burner phones.

And you'd still need to have a premium account to use it, you have to pay no matter what.

Reactionary, are you serious?

If anything, it was CS:GO that inspired this. Not Overwatch.

I'm concerned by the leveling system. Now you're actually scaled for playtime and gaining points in your match against other player's levels, but in the end that still isn't actually indicative of skill at all.

I get the feeling it'll be like CS:GO's levels, ie completely irrelevant for casual play
I'm just really curious why valve waited so long for this.
So far, they've already de-confirmed 9v9 showing up, there are no class limits at all. From the beta I've played matchmaking was pretty bare bones.
So why did this take so long to happen?

the overwatch closed beta started last year as well. why else would they release such a barebones competitive matchmaking just a month after overwatch comes out? if csgo inspired this, they would have worked on this and released it years ago, not just now.

maybe they wernt sure a class/hero based shooter would be popular competitve wise till overwatch

Are they seriously about to recycle the War Update?
I'm not sure they can call it a WAR update.
Heavy fucking destroys pyro.
unless the balancing tomarrow changes this, it'll be pretty one sided.
Are they seriously about to recycle the War Update?
People have been wanting another WAR! update, I dont think this is "recycling" so much as giving the fans what they want.
EDIT:
For further clarification, sure they may be "recycling" the same general idea or even system as the last WAR! update, but its not as a way to just add content for the hell of it. People have wanted another WAR! update, so they are attempting to give people something that they say they want. This will hopefully come with meaningful changes to both classes gameplay, as well, which people have wanted more stuff for both of those classes for awhile.
