the overwatch closed beta started last year as well. why else would they release such a barebones competitive matchmaking just a month after overwatch comes out? if csgo inspired this, they would have worked on this and released it years ago, not just now.
Because in the same update that introduced this menu, cases, weapon skins and the ability to pick up dropped weapons from enemies on the field were introduced into the game. And then there's this: http://www.teamfortress.tv/24792/valve-and-competitive-tf2 And this http://www.dailydot.com/esports/team-fortress-2-matchmaking-competitive/ The latter of which shows matchmaking strings that were added before Overwatch was even announced. Is that enough? How exactly is it barebones anyways?
How exactly is it barebones anyways?
From the beta: Dropdown menu for 6v6 and 9v9, 9v9 greyed out, probably will never happen now Very limited pool of modes and maps, 5CP and Koth only. Refusal to add any weapon/class bans Leaving Penalty has been an issue since the beginning, and its still not really fixed. Ranks never actually worked, you'd have a terrible time if you were queuing with 6 players. With the 10 tests its gotten, all I've really seen is the maps shuffle a bit and the UI progressively get prettier. I mean, I guess it'll do if you have hard on for the 6s comp style format, but I've always been more of a payload player myself.
None of what you said means it's "barebones", specially after they said it has these changes now: But hey they didn't do exactly the thing I wanted I guess it's barebones shit they made in 5 minutes to compete with ovw amirite guys.
Those aren't changes. That is exactly how it was in the beta about 5 months ago, baring the addition of attack/defense.
Those aren't changes.
Are they seriously about to recycle the War Update?
but why do research when you can just assume things and circlejerk about how valve adding new content is bad because dead game xD
I haven't followed the beta because I honestly don't care about competitive, but I still want to know how any of what you said means that it's barebones.
There were 2 modes of how many that exist in tf2? Really the comp mode is just pandering soley to the 6s comp scene, and thats kinda why I feel its lacking. From the rulesets we've gotten off the update page, its now going to be 3.
There were 2 modes of how many that exist in tf2? Really the comp mode is just pandering soley to the 6s comp scene, and thats kinda why I feel its lacking.
Isn't the overwatch competitive the same, with 2 only modes? (also don't follow comp for that so I might be talking out my arse here). And csgo is also one mode. I don't see how this is a problem at all. Also this is a new system they are just releasing now, unless they abandon it like MVM I think it's pretty obvious they will add new gamemodes to the rotation, or at least new maps.
At this point I have no idea what is happening in TF2 anymore, I want them to add a vanilla mode or just start over from scratch. I haven't played in a long time, but the last time I did it just felt they had just been piling crap onto what was a perfectly fine game for years.
I'm just really curious why valve waited so long for this. So far, they've already de-confirmed 9v9 showing up, there are no class limits at all. From the beta I've played matchmaking was pretty bare bones. So why did this take so long to happen?
Some could say many things. I say laziness and not giving a shit about TF2 in it's twilight years.
I'm looking forward to the balances, was there any tease that we'll get new weps as well? also heavy is holding meat and pyro has matches in that second picture :v:
Some could say many things. I say laziness and not giving a shit about TF2 in it's twilight years.
Laziness and not giving a shit, like releasing an update every summer and halloween at least

Fuck I mean how modern TF2 is, is the exact reason I left in the first place and went to Overwatch after a free weekend server stress test in march. I mean technically it's "new" but it's just like the last Halloween update, just using older stuff and adding some kinda new thing to make it not a legit recycle. It's called Overwatch :dogsleep:
People sure are passionate about complaining about a game they don't even play No wonder nothing TF2-related ever gets posted outside the TF2 section, this might very well be a game changing update that'll rebalance the meta completely and add a long-awaited competitive mode but the only thing people ever talk about is how the game is bad because it isn't in the exact same state as it was at launch.
Laziness and not giving a shit, like releasing an update every summer and halloween at least
Just contracts from CS:GO, Hats, and gun reskins of vanilla weapons. Hell last year's Halloween update was just all the old ones you had to play so you can get Gargoyle boxes from, you guessed it, contracts. Granted I left TF2 last year when they started doing contracts and CS:GO like crates. I know they do an update every Summer, Halloween, and Christmas, but after last summer, TF2's losing it's touch. It's lost it's good community servers, it's un-interested in it's Co-Op game, and there hasn't been a fucking update to the official comic series in, after next month, literally over a YEAR! Valve has always been getting lazy and content with itself since Dota 2 and CS:GO released, being happily content with working on software and raking in money from micro transactions on their popular multiplayer games and Steam. Like constant, like as in after I complete my Homework first thing I did was hop onto TF2 to my favorite community server with my friends. I quit TF2 last Fall, that's 2008-2015.

Making statements like that just makes you look like you want TF2 to die out of spite. The whole hurr tf2 vs ovw thing is so sickening and dumb, holy fuck. Also they didn't get lazy, you do know they are working with a team of 10 people now, some of which don't even work full time on tf2, right? People at valve just lost interest on tf2 and moved to other projects. That doesn't mean people should go "omg game is shit pls keel it and welcome ovw with open arms".
Comparing Overwatch to TF2 is like comparing Apples to Oranges. They're both fruit but they're both pretty different. Not really a fair comparison.

The game itself is still fun and here they're adding something that isn't just another contract update, but apparently it's not good enough. What would you like to see in an update other than a complete reversal to 2010 TF2?
This is fucking stupid. Video games are video games. I don't care what you play, just don't shove your opinion down everyone's throats.
Can't you understand that I don't want TF2 to die, I just don't like TF2 as it is now, and that Overwatch just came by and gave me a TF2-like experience that felt better. The TF2 I (as in me) knew is gone, and has been replaced by a lacking community that would rather trade, play Saxton Hale or Slender Fortress rather than the main game. Comp is either going to bring me back, or be it's final nail in the coffin for me personally.
I consider myself in the group of people with countless hours in the game who have played since the very beginning and have seen it all, and aren't impressed at all at the game now because of it. Nothing in TF2 phases me, I've literally done and seen everything there is to do in the game. It's so god damn boring to me now. The gunplay doesn't feel satisfying anymore, the animations are outdated and tons of the new weapons are still lazily re-using old animations, the entire game just feels like a physical item that's been having so many additions to it over the years to the point where it's just gaudy now. I guess that's just what happens when you're basically a 10 year old game that is still getting played by tons of people. I just really want a new game, one that still keeps the aesthetics and feel of TF2. I want a new engine, new animations, the same beloved classes in an improved environment. Better quality control, more creative and larger maps, more emphasis on weapons and building your classes' identities with GOOD cosmetics that keep to the game's theme. It's amazing we've gone 10 years in TF2 and we've never had a new class added to the game. So that's something they could explore with a new TF game as well. Overwatch is great, but it's nothing like TF2. I still respect TF2 for what it is, but my time with it is long since over.
I've played since 2009 but yeah I'm too new and blinded by hats to notice I also think their recent contract updates have been a bit lazy. What would you like to see in an update other than a complete reversal to 2010 TF2?
Well I'd like some legit weapons. Not fucking reskins of vanilla weapons or already released weapons. I'd like some more care for the Co-Op. I'd certainly love less Contracts I have to pay for a token to get into. I'd like to see the official comic get it's conclusion soon and with less "valve time" lazy bullshit (Seriously it's almost been a whole year :v:.) I'd like to see the good community servers come back. The servers where you were friends with everybody and they all knew your name and greeted you when you hopped on. Now it's only a few and they're all kinda douchy. Really from Valve, I want that old feeling that they really truely care about me, the consumer, rather than the bloated steam app I see today, with it's terrible Greenlight, and see Valve make games minus micro transactions (I'm kinda concerned they'll try to add it into L4D3 If given the chance). I was always ok with TF2 as it grew, but once the good community servers left and contracts were a thing, that's when I left.
I overreacted a bit there. I understand that it's a very different game; I also liked it better before, but I still play it and I feel like this update might breathe some life into it. It just bothers me when some people who haven't cared in years (not you) come in here to make sure we know that the update will certainly suck and that the game was only good while they played it. Sorry for going out of line there dude. I'll go back to waiting eagerly for the release.
tf2=shooter overwatch=Ability Based moba hybrid
Jesus christ you all sound like a bunch of bitter old men. Valve update a game that's gonna be a decade old next year and you're just going on about "dem good ol' days..." like having the exact same game since 2007 would make it better.
Jump to 2016 and the game is loaded with weapons that (are?) annoying, reuse animations and are by en large not viable,
The update tomorrow is going to include major rebalances.
the game is flooded with shitty clashing cosmetics,
This I'll give you.
holiday events now include pay to win bullshit
Nonexistant, as far as I know.
and every time Valve introduces a game mode that seems like has the potential to really shake things up valve reminds us that it doesn't matter if its good because they've already shoehorned a way to make it profitable
Again, I'm not sure what you mean. The latest gamemodes, Pass Time and Mannpower, have nothing in them to bring profit.
TBH the price point says to me that valve isn't confident this will work out, the price point WILL hurt matchmaking by shrinking the pool of players; ie the single most important variable for a quality matchmaking. If players like it and it takes off valve makes money, if it crashes and burns valve makes money.
Except then you realize that you don't have to pay extra at all and all you need to play matchmaking is a non-f2p account with an associated phone number. The 10$ fee is for people who don't have a phone or can't link the account with the number. It certainly beats buying a new phone. These restrictions exist to prevent cheaters and smurfs from running rampant in matchmaking, because the game is F2P. Otherwise the gamemode would quickly become totally unplayable. Overwatch doesn't need any of this since it is paid and has extremely aggressive anti-cheat software that reportedly locks you out even if you repurchased the game. Profit is hardly the primary goal here.

Valve could easily do what Blizzard does for anti-cheat, they just don't want to put the effort and the limitless amount of money they have into it.
To me it sounds like a lazy approach to not make their anti-cheat system better.
Vac is already detecting and banning cheaters on a weekly basis.
