Wait... what happened to all the mutants? Why is it only Xavier, Logan, and [sp]x-23 I assume [/sp]?
There are other mutants around, but they are super rare and most are in hiding; if they follow form Kurt will be leading one group and Hank another, but that probably won't come up in the movie unless they're trying to tie it in with the next X-Men film.
As for new mutants, they aren't being born anymore and why is probably the main plot of this story.
It's based on Old Man Logan, so probably [sp]ded[/sp]
Is it entirely based on that storyline or is it taking influence from it?
Well holy shit I should probably go see the other X-men movies.
To be honest, this looks like it will be (hopefully) a very different from the other X-Men movies so seeing the rest might turn you off/appreciate more this trailer.
I have to say the villain looks pretty generic in this trailer but it's probably going to be about Logan and X-23.
This actually looks really good. And as others have said I think Hugh could make a pretty good Joel for a Last of Us movie. It has a really similar feel, just need the freaky clicker zombies and we're set.
Go see Prisoners to see Hugh Jackman being as close to Joel in appearance and personality as it's gonna get. [sp]Also just because it's an incredible movie[/sp]
mild spoilers but the likeness is spot on
Is it entirely based on that storyline or is it taking influence from it?
Influences, there's pretty obvious reasons why it can't be 1:1 to OML.
Hurt is a really fitting song for this. I like it a lot.
I wonder if X-23 will time travel back with Cable to be with the main guys.

Didn't Deadpool already state Cable is a thing, especially in Deadpool 2? So this is entirely within the realm of possibility, introduce the big badass pouch wearing motherfucker in a gritty movie and get him a more major role being antagonized by the Merc with a Mouth. :v:
There's also a Red Band trailer

that thumbnail
I honestly hope they recast Wolverine instead of replacing him with X-23 in future movies. It would probably have to be a different kind of Wolverine since Jackman pretty much nailed this style, Tom Hardy could be a pretty good choice. Not very short, but certainly more of a manlet than Hugh Jackman.

God no.
Not until its rebooted into the MCU.
I generally despise the comic books movie industry, but this looks intriguing and breaking from the pack of assembly line crap.
This is the first X-Men movie I've been interested in since X-Men 3. Looks really fucking good.
Seeing this trailer and a couple images of the comic posted online really makes me want to read OML. I love character lore and Wolverine's is so fascinating

So have they basically combine Old Man Logan with the Second Coming event? Because it seems like they're hinting at X-23 being the first new Mutant for a while. So basically X-23 is Hope and Wolverine is Cable and they're throwing in some Old Man Logan for good measure.

There is a New Mutants movie in the works, wiki says prof x will have a cameo. who knows.
God I hope this doesn't suck. I really want a proper send off for Hugh Jackman.
I just realized something guys
The entire marvel cinematic universe will probably be rebooted in 30 something years, imagine that huh

this isn't the mcu tho
the x-men's timeline is so screwed they don't even need to reboot anything tbh. just keep making movies and if there's any conflicts in continuity, just pretend they don't exist

This just made me realize.
If DoFP "retconned" everything, including Origins, does that mean we can see Renold's Deadpool in one of these movies?

There's actually a joke in Deadpool where he tries to figure out what timeline he's in.
Man, fuck trying to figure out what's canon and what's not now after DoFP, outside of FC, DoFP and AoA. Just try and enjoy it as it's own film
If I'm not mistaken, the timeline starts with First Class with the 70's parts of DoFP happening the next decade.
Then we go up to the late 90's/early 2000's where X-Men, X2, and X3 happen.
In the future, the dystopian stuff with the Sentinels happens; Wolverine is sent back to the 70's to nip the whole Trask/Sentinel thing in the bud.
So then everything after X2 was presumably made non-canon, until Apocalypse (which took place in the 80's). This confirms X-Men and X2 are now non-canon, because they meet Wolverine and have Nightcrawler join the team in the 80's. So X-Men is questionably canon (since it's possible Cyclops and Jean just forgot about Logan/didn't recognize him), but everything else is invalidated due to fucking around with the timeline.
They basically (and very cleverly) rebooted the series from the ground-up with an in-canon reason, allowing them to use all the same beloved/recognizable actors (but also recasting the ones that didn't work so well, because "well it's the 80's, so Storm should be younger").
Also Wade Wilson was retconned to not be a mutant in Deadpool, which obviously stuck closer to the source material than Origins.
tl;dr
Thanks to time-travel/studio shenanigans,
X2, X3, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Wolverine, and the dystopia parts of DoFP = erased from the timeline/non-canon
X-Men = questionably canon
First Class, Days of Future Past, Apocalypse, Deadpool, and now Logan = current timeline/canon

That's an interesting choice that DoFP and Apocolypse are the same timeline as Logan given the tone of the movies
Even having grown up as a Marvel and DC fan I haven't been interested in superhero movies for years - the last X-Men movie I bothered with was will.i.amverine. Usually the trailers look bland to me but this looks great. Watched it because I was bored and now I'm surprised to say I want to see it.
That's an interesting choice that DoFP and Apocolypse are the same timeline as Logan given the tone of the movies
It fits going forward. Essex corporation is in Logan in some form, the Reavers here are just starting out, and if Kurt and Hank and their gangs are out there hiding what's left of the mutants away it open up avenues for Cable/Deadpool/Force and The Xcutioner's song, where mutants essentially become the very problem they were fighting against, which again thematically tracks.
Fox understands that a connected universe means money right now, so they're probably going to leverage what they have at maximum tie in potential.
I can't remember feeling excited for an X-Men movie since the first one, so this is a hell of a good thing.
I bet the Mutants being gone is a result of the Legacy Virus.
Might play into why Wolverines healing is going away, and the line about "you still have time"
