Nah, it's pretty fine where I live.
But if you're a tourist it's really not the place for you, Russian strangers can be the definition of asshole, but if you manage to get a decent friend there then it's one of those friends that you get for life, a true broski that will stick by you and will provide company whenever it is needed. There's really no 'in the middle' kind of stuff where you can go "I'm just that quiet kid don't mind me" I've found that most people get annoyed by that for some reason and that eventually leads to violence, also culture is pretty much the most important thing when it comes to Russians. traditions, family respect, etc. Everything is very oldschool. That's why I prefer it here (Krasnoyarsk) and not a fancy and busy city like New York for example or LA.
