They might as well use modified IdTech5 engine for next games, new fallout and next elder scrolls perhaps, Evil Within runs on it and it's probably the most "Bethesda looking" game since Skyrim.
I did that
dual legendary axes with fire/lightning ice/something else and totally shit on everything on my path
but as a mage I had maxed fire breath + fire EXPLOSION spells and ice or lightning, so while I was OP as a melee character, magic is sitting around and "Lol ur dead"
this works for a while, but since magic doesnt scale, there comes a point where it simply does pissall damage anymore.
this is especially true on higher difficulty settings
also fire breath is by no means restricted to mages. also it sucks balls and does piss for damage.

Evil Within is not made by Bethesda Game Studios
No mod still has implemented parrying, make enemies ice skate with freeze spells, body dismemberment and better animations. TES modding community is too focused on creating sex mods.
It's pretty hilarious whenever someone says that Skyrim has nothing but sex mods when you can easily find some great ones with little effort.

I see now, I've checked the game is only published by Bethesda, pretty weird then about graphical similarities.
The idea behind Morrowind's combat system was that you start as a complete zero, an idiot that couldn't tell which end of the sword works best for stabbing, and lacks any basic combat training. If you wanna get good at anything, you're best off getting at least basic training from a trainer.
It's similar to the original Deus Ex where you'd have terrible crosshair sway if you weren't trained in guns.
This game design puts emphasis on roleplay and creating a distinct character that might not be a good fighter, but a great trader and manipulator. It's all about reflecting the ingame character. It's made for an RPG with action elements.
The idea behind Skyrim (and DXHR) is to start the player being reasonably good at everything, especially the established core gameplay. Increasing skill is mainly about keeping up with the levelling world and unlocking perks that offer a bit more gameplay variety. Trainers are borderline unnecessary since the grind isn't difficult to overcome and doesn't offer crucial benefits.
This game design emphasizes on action and giving players immediate access to most of the core gameplay, with some room to grow if you want to specialize. It's all about offering the player a fun game. It's made for an action game with RPG elements.
It's two very different approaches to game design that achieve different goals; I don't think you can claim one is straight up better than the other. Tho obviously you can have a preference.
While both have their supposed target audiences and both should exist, I can't help but feel that Morrowind or DX's combat system is way too "complicated".
Not as in "wow so much math", but more like if you don't have any skill points in X, you SUCK at it completely, and if you do have like one or two, you still suck, but at least you can hit the broad side of the wrong barn.
I still have nightmares when I think about that aiming reticule in DX, that took like 5 seconds or more to steady. What the fuck man? I absolutely love the game despite me being the kind of person who enjoys a game less when its graphics are obviously showing their age, and yet I really do love the game. But the fact that you completely SUCK at something if you don't put points in it makes it somewhat of a hair tearing experience. Not that you can't play the game like that, but it is somewhat enfuriating.
But when I think about it, Skyrim's combat system is indeed oddly simple and basic. All you get from levels is more damage/defense and new abilities. Either I'm trying to complicate things and saying that isn't enough, or it really isn't enough and could have used a bit more depth, like making use of more elements.
As for DX:HR, the game is so bloody easy... You can just corner shoot someone to the head or rush them in a few occasions and takedown, it really isn't hard at all. The skill system does help in many things there, but it really just makes you even more ungodly. Although, this is assuming you are good at stealth.
oblivion already showed engine age imho, and they still are trying to use it even now
how are they going to keep making money if they don't totally change the engine
I dunno... there's no other company out there that just slapdashes their old physics and/or gamplay engine every couple of years and calls it fixed out there. No sir, especially not one that's super fucking rich and publishes games on their own platform or anything. And especially not one that this forum jacks off to all the time.
Nope.
None at all.
[sp]Seriously?[/sp]
Honestly I think bethesda did a pretty good job upgrading gamebryo over the years. I mean yeah the outdoor shadows are shitty in skyrim and distant water and waterfalls look like frozen milk but aside from that I think their improvements are pretty impressive.
To be honest my biggest beefs with Creation/Bethbryo are technical rather than design-wise:
Firstly, the shitty error reporting. This is a general software engineering principle, making sure your program gives useful error reports. But it's especially important when your game thrives off people modding the shit out of it, and potentially creating conflicts that could crash the game. ConScribe only helps so much, and it can't help with crashes that aren't directly script-related (that is, most of them).
Secondly, the monolithic levelled list edits. Mods that add new weapons, armors and stuff to the world are common, and as evidenced by the bashed patch workaround people evidently like using more than one at once. This stuff about generated patches and runtime levelled list manipulation shouldn't really be needed for such a common action. There's also other stuff like making a sound mod conflict with everything because it had to change an entire spell record just to change its sound effects.
Thirdly, the scripting engine - this one just baffles me, because I don't know any other engine where script latency exists, at pretty much any frame rate, and you have this awkward split-second delay between taking an action and seeing the effect. It's okay if the script is for a quest, or a book that opens a menu or whatever. But scripts are also used for very time-sensitive things, like making spells or attacks that can't be implemented without scripts. It's just silly - have the script take all the time it needs on its thread like a sane engine. I suppose it's so consoles can have a variable scripting burden without hurting that silky smooth 30fps - although that arguably makes it even more terrible.
And finally, the archaic limits on things. I've only come across 255 leveled list length limit, but other people of course have problems with the 255 cap on mods. Admittedly, having that many mods will almost certainly cause a lot of problems on its own, and it's probably implemented using 'byte' as the index into the array making it a pain to change - but if you're going to update the engine I think pushing these limits up would be well worth the effort.
