How do you even get into train driving? Do you need a degree in shovelling coal?
Just apply for the job if a trainee position comes up on a train company's website. [editline]7th April 2017[/editline]
Won't you be replaced by a computer within a decade though?
Very unlikely within that timescale on lines which run above 40/50mph. The technology isn't yet proven to be safe in this country and there are too many variables and older trains which could never support automation on the railway. [editline]7th April 2017[/editline]
You'll always need a dude sat watching the machine though incase it goes rogue.
This too. Not to mention someone to make sure the doors are closed safely and free of obstructions. One of the drivers at my depot had a passenger on the platform with his hand stuck in the closed doors and the train had interlock - he could have departed and would have dragged the bloke along the platform. This is on a modern 2016 train which has obstacle detection in the doors.
HR Manager? No idea how you're gonna get there from working in the kitchens. Most you will get is shift manager and maybe site manager but they're on shite money anyway. You also need qualifications and such to do HR. Have you been studying in those 5 years?
The person I was interviewed by was an HR manager herself, McDonalds only promote internally, she went from part time kitchen member to HR manager in 6 years entirely through internal promotions and training.
You guys should consider train driving. It's a decent job, when you go home you don't have to worry about anything until you're next at work and the salary is decent (plus final salary pension)
And if you're working for Scotrail - whenever there's leaves (more precisely: A leaf) on the track you can go home early!
The person I was interviewed by was an HR manager herself, McDonalds only promote internally, she went from part time kitchen member to HR manager in 6 years entirely through internal promotions and training.
HR Positions are few and limited. You're gonna get lucky or not. You can literally be stuck doing kitchen stuff if you dont be careful
And if you're working for Scotrail - whenever there's leaves (more precisely: A leaf) on the track you can go home early!
Trains from Glasgow QS are the worst.
How do you even get into train driving? Do you need a degree in shovelling coal?
I don't even think you need GCSEs, just basic literacy, customer service skills, not be colourblind and be able to concentrate. There's a few different stages to the assessment process but you all should definitely give it a go. Potentially be earning £47k a year within 3 years.
My basic salary is £51k but if I work about two or three days of overtime a month and work some Sundays (all of which I have done this month) I'll be on about £76k which isn't too bad for just pushing buttons and pulling levers
You just need a good safety conscious work ethic 👍 [editline]8th April 2017[/editline]
My basic salary is £51k but if I work about two or three days of overtime a month and work some Sundays (all of which I have done this month) I'll be on about £76k which isn't too bad for just pushing buttons and pulling levers
And going on strike
Don't forget that train drivers are often "spare" which means they're on emergency standby. They get paid to sit in the mess room doing nothing. If you can wangle being spare on a bank holiday you are earning literal megabucks for fuck all.
You just need a good safety conscious work ethic 👍 [editline]8th April 2017[/editline] And going on strike
I haven't been on strike yet in this job. Besides you don't get paid for strike days :buckteeth:
Why are scotrail a bunch of idiots: Scotrail announcement: "Trains to and from glasgow central are now delayed" *I walk up to intercom to inquire about when said trains will be arriving* Utter scud missile of a man on the intercom: "Yea sir, the train will be arriving in 30 minutes...there will be no delays or cancellations" *I proceed to wait 30 minutes, the billboard with train times looks good* Scotfail intercom: "Trains due to be arriving are now cancelled, next train is in 1 hour" What a bunch of idiots, thanks for telling me lies scotrail.

Someone knocked on the door when I was doing a poo. Long gone by the time I got there Who was it? What did they want? Not knowing is killing me
I always say if it's really important they can knock/call again. A man's gotta poop in peace.

HMRC website has to be the most backwards and fundamentally bullshit website I've ever used.
HMRC website has to be the most backwards and fundamentally bullshit website I've ever used.
I love that they built this new simple front end for putting in your tax returns. But if you want to do anything else you're fucked. I often spend half my time trying to traverse the old site to find what I need. It's awful

I often spend half my time trying to traverse the old site to find what I need. It's awful
The new front end doesn't even do anything, it just redirects itself to to pages repeating the same stuff, and then redirecting to pages you've already been to. Then you have to navigate a page with a fine comb to find the one link that actually does anything.
Had a supposed charity worker from Meningitis Research Foundation knock at my door. She gave a good 1 minute speech before asking me if I wanted to buy raffle tickets for the foundation. Mind you, these tickets did look a little genuine and had those silver scratch panels on them - didn't buy any, I just shut the door on her. I just can't tell now if she was a genuine worker or if frauders are stepping up their game.
