I think it's to bypass spam-checks or something. My friend got a scam-message in facebook where quite a few of the vowels like a,e,o etc. were replaced with similar-looking math-symbols. :v:

I got a physical spam letter a while back. From some Spanish lawyer or some shit who claimed that my relative "Elizabeth" had passed away recently and left a great fortune. My family is Iranian and I'm pretty sure Elizabeth isn't a common Iranian name. He should've at least done his research and googled an Iranian name. Lazy bastard.

Being smart takes time and effort.
Furthermore being stupid from the get go ensures that the only people that answer are the people that are dumb enough to believe the whole story.
Even if you had sent him an email back due to him getting the Iranian name right you would have just seen through his scheme the moment he said "now pls give me the bank account details". Which is just a waste of time on his part.
