How do we know this? How can one tell if an animal is aware of self-death concept or not?
Really not sure, tests I suppose, that's where the research on Dogs or Cats and other animals etc, came from, I'm sure I read details in that respect.
[editline]edit[/editline]
It's like if a dog can't look or see itself in a mirror, or can't conceptualize that it's NOT another dog, but it's him, does it have a concept of self? Would that effectually remove it's ability to realize death, since it doesn't really think of itself as itself? or are we humans the only unlucky and I suppose "lucky" in some respects fuckers who consistently realize "Shit we are going to die one day"
When one of our cats died, he just hid himself in a closet for almost 2 days refusing to come out. When he started it I knew he was dying. And I think he knew it too.
Does this mean that they understand the concept of death? If so, do they depressed and anxious? Do they know that they're going to die?
It is, and it was. He was a superb cat and I cried almost 2 days.

If there is a dead monkey in a cage with a group of other monkeys, they will defend the corpse from human (or other animal) interference. They're very intelligent, and monkeys have a very strong sense of unification.
One time when I was at practice, we found a dead squirrel near a tree. Later another squirrel came by, dragged the body under the tree, then put a leaf over it and watched over it for a few minutes.
Are feelings a mammal thing? Because it feels like a mammal thing

Birds definitely have feelings; reptiles kinda seem like they do sometimes, but they're so different, it can be hard to tell. Also, I've heard from people who work in aquariums that fish seem to have deep feelings sometimes, but I kinda doubt it.

Up in the air whether or not insects, arachnids, and other arthropods have feelings since they follow such autonomous lifestyles and from our perspective don't seem to show much response besides their "normal" behaviors.

Insects and Arachnids are weird.
They're like little robots that move with biological hydraulics.
