They should seriously start making serious reviews only, would make review sites such as IGN look like absolute shit with no idea how to rate a video game.
but i love the unserious reviews
You're wrong. I hold Notch in very high contempt because he's taken Minecraft in an awful direction recently, because he has no idea how to run a company. I'm glad he's stepped down to work on other things because he was about to run the game right into the ground by making it into what he wanted instead of what he thought the people who played it wanted, which is what Minecraft was always all about before its 'full' release, and I'm one of the first couple hundred buyers of the damn thing. I love the game and enjoy it but the graphics style does not make it pretentious or indie nor does the gameplay; the fact that Mojang was founded out of one person turning into multiple people is what makes it indie, if using a term like that is even fair play for describing video games anymore.
Minecraft was always about what he wanted. In an early interview with him when minecraft was still in alpha, and was closing in on a million sales, he was asked what his recipe for success was. His answer? "I just made I game I wanted to play!"
I agree with this review but it's pretty ruthless towards fez itself. If you judge fez purely on its own, I think it would be unfair to give it such a hard time.
Because I don't really think it's about the games. Sure these indie games may not be the best, or even good at all, but with this review and the minecraft review it's really come down to people thinking developers mishandle their games and high expectations. But there's a certain amount of arrogance that comes with these opinions. Personally I think everybody needs to just chill the fuck out, myself included in some cases.
Call me stupid if you want, but I think that the biggest criticisers of indie games, especially minecraft, simply want to make games themselves. And in that case I say go for it, instead of posting shit on forums.
I really don't like RockCock. All of the reviews I've seen him do have been incredibly opinionated.
You do realise reviews are you know
Opinion pieces.
Maybe they could try something unique?
Coming up with a unique idea isnt easy with how many games and gametypes there are now.
I found Fez really fun...
It looked good and felt smooth and satisfying to play. Although i do agree it could have been a bit more challenging.
What was he doing for 5 YEARS!??
What was he doing for 5 YEARS!??
All but the last 6 months were spent trying to figure out how to be as indie as possible.
A few months to grow the hipster beard.
I REALLY need to change my taste in platformers.
Also, nice Irate Gamer reference.

Because there has never been a great game that was made for the sake of art.
I don't mind their silly reviews but I think it'd be awesome if they did more serious ones.
really good review
I love their outro. I sit through it everytime. Reminds me of the old SEGA ads from the 90's
Wow, he kinda missed pretty much half, if not more than half of the game and just reviewed that.
[editline]19th April 2012[/editline]
Hahaha oh man, his summary at the end completely misses the game by a goddamn mile.
You do realise reviews are you know

Perhaps Opinionated is the wrong word.
I mean that he only bashes games, and never mentions anything good about them.
Even if someone downright hates a game, they can usually find at least one thing they enjoyed.
Too many people are like that these days, and I find it annoying.

far more honest than the game media though

Fez sucks and is overhyped, just like Angry birds and minecraft is
they're medicore games that most people could and have make/made but are praised as if they're the most original fucking things in the world, just like call of duty to day because both are extreme with what they do, just like RC64 said, when you go that extreme, you get shit.
there I said it. Want me to continue? Because then I'll just start talking about how the only people who could possibly like the shit are either dumb 13 year olds, bored people, or people who don't know games.
also when did facepunch grow a vendetta against indie games
Nothing wrong with Indie games like Overgrowth:

I can't speak for all FP, but I'm pretty tired of pixel-art indie games.
It doesn't feel retro, it feels lazy.

You're judging the game on like 40% of it, you're missing the whole point of the game that makes it really original and extremely unique. You're just making a fool of yourself.
also when did facepunch grow a vendetta against indie games
since developers used "indie" as an excuse to pump out a shitty 2d platformer with a gimmick twist and nothing but cheap pixel art
being "indie" is now an excuse to just be a lazy developer and not try to do anything relatively new or interesting, and god forbid an indie dev does something in 3d that'd just be crazy talk, no no we need more 2d platformers, that's what i'm really craving whenever i look on steam for a new game to play, 2d platformers.
the only people who could possibly like the shit are either dumb 13 year olds, bored people, or people who don't know games.
Okay, that's just narrow-minded. I like Minecraft, I think it's fun to play with friends. I like VVVVVV because I think it's a really fun game with a lot of challenge and amazing music. I like Super Meat Boy because it's a really hard game with great controls, good music and it's made by cool people (same with VVVVVV/Terry Cavanagh, Minecraft/Notch). I know games, I've played a lot of them but I've probably spent more time playing Minecraft than any game in my Steam library. I've never played Fez but from what I've heard from the game developers I follow it's supposed to be a really good game. I don't know, but I'd rather trust a game developer than someone who bashes a game as soon as it loads (rockcock plays vvvvvv is a good example of that).

Wolfire, Frozenbyte and several others make great looking 3d games.

It's not just a 2d platformer with a gimmick, there's so much more to it that you're completely missing. The 2d platformer with a 3d twist is just like the small top layer it that simply is a way to uncover what the game is really about.
I really liked VVVVVV. I think he is too harsh on indie games, but I see what he is trying to say sometimes. However, I think he needs to learn to enjoy some of the simplicity of Indie games. However games like Super Meat Boy and VVVVVV actually have a challenge to them, where I agree Fez looks kinda suckish.
also when did facepunch grow a vendetta against indie games
Since indie went from "self published game made for fun" to "lousy excuse to take 5 seconds to do graphics"
[editline]19th April 2012[/editline]
Some indie games do it right.
Super meat boy, Monday Night combat, Dungeon Defenders, Amnesia, All wonderful recent indie games that haven't fallen in any department (gameplay, graphics...)
But in much more recent it now has been the thing to have "retro graphics" and stuff like that.
Its overused. Just like the medival fantasy theme is overused for MMOs, the retro graphics are way overused.
None of us hate indie games as a whole, that would be like hating all games of a certain platform. It is way to wide of a genre to say you hate it all.
But we do hate bad games. And rightfully so.
You're judging the game on like 40% of it, you're missing the whole point of the game that makes it really original and extremely unique. You're just making a fool of yourself.
I didn't say they were totally shit, I said they were overhyped. and they aren't original at all, it even says in the video that fez's gameplay style has been done many times before. I think anyone who calls them unique or original and that's why they like them are idiots because it just doesn't work like that. You can't take an already made concept and twist it around slightly then make it original.

VVVVV is hard which is good, Limbo is amazing, and Minecraft is great. VVVVV being hard does make it stand out greatly, but the gravity shift is simple as an idea even still and has been done before. So, I don't know, I just don't see it as worth it, but that's just me.
but the people who seem to worship these games the most are idiot 13 year olds who have no idea what the hell they're talking about. Minecraft for example is pretty fun, but medicore in build. They're all OK games but they're doing things that have very specifically been done many times before, especially angry birds.
Liking/loving indie games is one thing, but acting as if they're highly appreciable works of art and completely original all the time is simply downright stupid. Most indie games in raw format is "you jump on things and save a princess". I like playing minecraft as well, and loved Limbo, was worth the 10$, and a lot of indie games stand out, but they still do have a basic structure that makes them all very generic.

I think Minecraft was downright lucky at best it just ripped off Infiniminer. Notch was downright lazier then the developer of Fez, worse in fact because he succeeded in terms of popularity but failed to update the game regularly, the core of the game was done in such a short amount of time. It was really quite something to see how much popularity the guy got most of which I consider undeserved.
Sure it was innovative but that was once again only due to the core concept of Infinminer the rest happened to fall in place due to the community and Notch releasing it InDev if he'd never done that the game would have been atrocious on release day.
The about of stupid reviews on IGN made me not really look at game reviews, until this.

The whole "rotate the world" thing is nothing more than a gimmick, it's like he said in the video, the only time you use it is when you run out of platforms and need to find a new one.
