95 Maximas aren't to bad either, if for the only down side to them is the hood weighs about a billion lbs... My roomies car is a maxima, the hood struts are bad and takes a 2x4 to hold the hood up.
1. Buy Maxima 2. Remove hood 3. ??? 4. No problem!
Had I the money, I'd rather get a lighter hood. Like Fiberglass or carbon fiber, but painted because I'm not trying to race car the roomies DD.
4EAT might be a dog, but it's better than the myriad of issues that seem to plague the 5MT in the 90s. Never seen so many people complaining about practically glass transmissions until I read up on the older subie manuals. First car I drove from work and back for a good year and a half was a 2005 Suzuki Grand Vitara. It was tragically boring, but very mechanically sound with barely any road noise. Just was kinda disconnected from the environment and features were lacking. Gas mileage was also ehhhh at around 18 average. First car I've ever owned in my name is my '99 Subaru Legacy. 24 MPG average, AWD all the time, japan strong just like the GV was. Gets me anywhere I need to go in any form of weather any time. 2.2L is bulletproof. Just watch out for 2.5Ls cause they like to pop head gaskets. 4EAT for earlier vehicles is a better choice than the 5MT if only because they tend to be rather fragile, though if you're mechanically inclined or have big pockets and still want a manual, you could consider it, especially since the 4EAT tends to be on the hard side of shifting and doesn't know when it wants to shift gears sometimes. Subaru interiors are also notoriously spartan and devoid of features (more than the GV in my case, but at least I can use a tape to aux converter and the speakers aren't in the damn dash.)
buy 00-04 have 5mt that isnt glass (or as glass) ??? profit
I bought an '85 300ZX 2+2 for $1300 when I was 16. Sold everything of value I had. Had 83k on the ODO and didn't run, so I bought a shop manual and made it happen. The day I got it running (pretty sure I was saying "OHHH FUUUCKK" in this picture): [t]http://i.imgur.com/PM7Mvva.jpg[/t] And a few months later: [t]http://i.imgur.com/fRA3dI8.jpg[/t]
Jesus christ I am jealous of this. Wow, thanks to everyone for all the replies, lots of good information and suggestions here. I've been considering a mid 90's cherokee recently. Always had a soft spot for those, and the 4WD would be nice once the inevitable winter snow starts coming down. Only downside I have with it is the fuel economy. Not a total deal breaker.
XJ's get pretty great gas mileage by SUV standards.
get a crown vic
You will scare many people with that.
You will scare many people with that.
Yeah, all the people who pay for your gas :v:

Understanding that it is New York though, a 2000 Silverado 1500 Base Extended Cab with 4.3 V6 and 5 speed manual should be a little bit better on mileage, but you lose the 4WD option on any V6 of that year. If you decide to get a Silverado and want 4WD, you'd have to move up to the Vortec 4800 V8; any of Chevy's Vortec engines are excellent choices. Just throwing another option out. While the back seat isn't that bad on room for sitting, if you're lying down, you should have no problems. Get a camper top and use the bed if the back seat isn't enough.
I've had two i6 cherokees and they were (except for the beetle) the best cars I've ever owned. I'd get one again if I could afford the gas

I mean, yeah, 4WD is better than just RWD, even better than FWD, but proper tires are the way to go (it's actually illegal to drive with summer tires in the snow here)

There's no other requirement than the thread being deeper than 3mm during winter time.

Ive pulled cars up hills with 4wd on nearly bald all terrains and drove around town in 8inches of snow and didn't come close to getting stuck once. [editline]21st June 2014[/editline] But I also almost slid into the back of a Cherokee at a stop light when we both hit a patch of ice
Winter tires have always been a failure from my perspective because they're a gamble on ice. 4WD allows other tires that do have traction to get off of ice.
I don't understand why winter tires are a gamble on ice. Everything is a gamble on ice.
4WD doesn't really keep you from getting stuck, you just have two wildly spinning open diffs instead of one. Honestly a 2WD prerunner style vehicle with a locker in the rear would do better with winter tires than your average shitbox Tahoe or something. Hell, I was mobbing all around through the snow in my Teg passing idiots stuck in Tahoes/Suburbans and other middle aged women protection bubbles. It's all about driving smart and reading the conditions, although a LSD/locker goes a long ways along with a good set of snow tires.
4wd with lockers seems like the best option then.
On the topic of winter tires; General Altimax snow tires have been on my car for 2 winters in a row, and in the WI winters shit gets hairy. Those tires are amazing in all conditions.
My F-150 came with a LSD rear end from the factory. I always wondered why other people were getting stuck in mud in their trucks that I would just drive right through. It wasn't until I looked up the axle code on the door that I figured it out. Never really needed 4wd with that LSD rear end.....
My Cherokee had automatic diff locks when I put it in 4x4. I remember when I picked up a friend of mine to go somewhere and when I backed up into his neighbor's road to turn around and get back out again, one of the rear wheels got into a small pit that was really icy so I didn't get anywhere. Then I put it in 4x4 high and drove off like it was dry asphalt in the summer. Cherokees are fucking great during winter. I'd love to have one again, but I just can't afford the gas for it yet. I could when I did own two of them, but I got back into school and lost a lot of income. When I get a steady job I'll definitely get another 4 liter cherokee
You live in new york city? Don't get a truck/suv. Not worth the gas and the hassle parking. Get a compact like a honda, if you really want 4wd for winter check out '80s toyota tercels, older subies, or awd honda wagons from the 80s/90s
Also don't drive through NYC in something you care not to damage
Honda civic wagovan go
I don't understand why winter tires are a gamble on ice. Everything is a gamble on ice.
Just focused on the subject of winter tires. Closest thing that's ever saved me is my 4WD. Yeah, nothing beats a locker. My Truck came with a locker from the factory, but 90% of the time, I engage 4WD before the locker engages. The few times it does though, I can usually feel a slight jolt. Here's a video though on why you'd want a locker in certain scenarios over a 4WD [editline]24th June 2014[/editline]
Also don't drive through NYC in something you care not to damage
Something else to consider.
