Right, it's expected that people will be assholes on the internet, so we shouldn't point out how wrong being an asshole on the internet is. Everyone knows this already, it's common knowledge, shut up Anita, stop making videos, stop talking. Stop making me feel uncomfortable because my world view is being challenged.
She's not challenging any world views, she's repeating shit everyone knows and has known for some time.
But they did. Websites like Gather Your Party, forums like r/mensrights, and individuals like thunderf00t and Investig8veJournalism all used social media to loosely (her words) organize against her. if it was just general internet assholery this thing would have died months ago. Instead we are still seeing videos and articles like this, insipid attempts at character assassination while simultaneously completely missing the point.
Obviously if many people have a common hate they're going to work together. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
Yeah, I remember Jessi Slaughter. I remember that story dying within months because people stopped caring and it left the general consciousness of the internet. But a year after Sarkeesians kickstarter gets funded and months after her first video is produced we still have people like thunderf00t making videos talking about how she is just in it for the attention and that she is going far too slow by his standards. This tells me that that a lot of people still have a chip on their shoulder about the whole thing and want to keep it alive rather than slinking back to making videos about how hard being a young white male in America is.
The mensrights is a load of shit and nobody pays attention to them. People still hate her because she got rich by exploiting people and lying to them.
Bullies and trolls that are loosely organized and unusually tenacious. She struck a nerve and she wants to show everyone how exposed it is.
Like I said, people with common interests will eventually find each other.
im sorry whos anita sarkeesian expoiting
There's not much critical thinking to be done. X was kidnapped by Y so Z has to rescue X, just because X is a female character doesn't mean it's sexist.
It's not sexist because you have to rescue someone, it's sexist because you have to rescue a helpless female who exists purely as an object and the objective of a game between two characters. If Mario had to save Peach, Toadstool, Wario, and Luigi all in one game people would just call that plot simplistic. The fact that he is playing basketball with Peach against Bowser is what makes her character objectified.
In a lot of them Mario is barely a character, he may as well be an object too. It's simple and people try too hard to over analyze things. There's no complicated plot or evil misogynist undertones. None of the characters are deep, they're just there for the player to interact with.
Again, the fact that none of the characters have character is irrelvant. How complicated or not the plot or characters are doesn't change the subject-object relationship Also she explained this in her video about subject and object. Mario is the subject. He runs through the world, jumps on goombas, goes through pipes, and saves the day. You are in control of his character and get to experience the power that comes with being Mario. Peach is the object. She exists as a literal objective in most Mario games. She doesn't have much of a character or do anything other than get captured then get rescued and when you rescue her you beat the game. Again, the point isn't that Nintendo is mysogynistic or evil, just that they rely on lazy writing to set up the plot and gameplay for video games they make.
Nintendo clearly hates females and are part of the Male Illuminati to oppress strong womyn.
It's far more likely that they are just lazy.
Nintendo clearly hates females and are part of the Male Illuminati to oppress strong womyn.
What male illuminati?
im sorry whos anita sarkeesian expoiting
The people who gave her over a hundred thousand dollars to make a series of informative videos about women in video games.
The people who gave her over a hundred thousand dollars to make a series of informative videos about women in video games.
OH PLEASE. She just asked for the money, nobody had to give it to her. And half the reason she got any of it was people posting hateful shit about her. It's hilarious people on Reddit and 4chan constantly whine about that when they pretty much caused it. And there's plenty of shit that gets money on kickstarter, you guys only whine about this one because she's criticizing video games. If you didn't all pull a tantrum like a bunch of children she'd have probably not even made her money and gone back to making the niche unknown videos she had been. But instead you did, she got a butt load of money (and every dollar of that is the rest of the internet giving you the finger), she's more well known than she could have possibly been otherwise, and anyone not complaining about her thinks you're all idiots. If you had any sense you'd quietly drop the subject and hope nobody remembers the time you all banded together and accomplished the absolute opposite of what you set out to do.
She's not challenging any world views, she's repeating shit everyone knows and has known for some time.
It's obviously not that commonly known if there is such a high demand for her analysis.
Obviously if many people have a common hate they're going to work together. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
Obvious. Not justifiable.
The mensrights is a load of shit and nobody pays attention to them. People still hate her because she got rich by exploiting people and lying to them.
Who did she exploit or lie to?
Like I said, people with common interests will eventually find each other.
So then, you agree? Thank goodness, I hate arguing with Sil. It's your turn.
The people who gave her over a hundred thousand dollars to make a series of informative videos about women in video games.
do you know what exploitation means there was nothing not obvious about her pitch on kickstarter. she asked for 6000, people gave her far more than what she asked for, and every single one of them knew exactly what they were doing when they gave her the money calling that exploitation is ridiculous and an insult to the exploitation of workers and women around the world.
OH PLEASE. She just asked for the money, nobody had to give it to her. And half the reason she got any of it was people posting hateful shit about her. Nobody except Anita herself anyway. She got loads of money and jumped ship because nobody can do anything about it. And thanks to all the press she's gotten she gets to go around being a guest speaker and holding lectures to make even more money. She doesn't care about feminism or equal rights, she cares about money. The fact that people are still defending her just goes to show that she picked the right people to sell her scheme to.
they gave her money to make a series of videos, she is making a series of videos. i don't get how that is exploitive? i mean on the exploitation scale i would rank it a 1/5...assuming it should be placed on the scale at all.
In the entire year following the kickstarter she made a single video with a minimal increase of quality than her previous ones.

spare us the histrionics pls
i'v taken shits that were more exploitive than anita sarkeesian's kickstarter.
If you want to talk exploitation, the Tropes vs. Men project people did in response to her probably qualifies better. They took the money and ran.
Stop making me feel uncomfortable because my world view is being challenged.
Who said that? Also how is saying something that's common knowledge challenging world views? Who the fuck are you even replying to? What the fuck does it have to do with what I said? I'm just saying it's what happens. It's not proof of the theory. The only thing it proves is that there are people on the internet who act like assholes. You can't pretend that it's not what usually happens on the internet and when it does happen in reply to you go "oh, see? this is proof I was right". This was nothing that wasn't expected to happen.
But they did.
"Holy shit, a lot of different people disagreed with me. IT'S AN ORGANIZED PLOT." People just fucking disagreed, some aggressively. Again, lets go back to conspiracy theorist bob. A lot of people call him out on his bullshit, should he really be saying that people are (loosely) organizing against him? And the reason they keep going is that she keeps going. If Jessi kept uploading vids, people would keep going after her as well.
Bullies and trolls that are loosely organized and unusually tenacious. She struck a nerve and she wants to show everyone how exposed it is.
How is this striking a nerve if every video about feminism/racism/homophobia gets the same results? The same group of people flaming/trolling.
Hell, I'd go so far as to say the Tropes vs Women in Video Games kickstarter was one of the more reliable ones. She asked for a fairly low amount of money and her previous works were easily accessible. In a world where video game projects from people who haven't done anything serious in years raise millions of dollars off a feature list and some concept art it's hard to find anything at fault with Sarkeesian's
Nobody accomplished anything here, not even the social justice warriors who poured tons of cash all over her. [editline]4th May 2013[/editline]
And the reason they keep going is that she keeps going. She made a video. Also for someone who doesn't care about feminism she has devoted of awfully large amount of time pursuing it.
Yes, she made a single video. In an entire year she made a single video when she told her backers she was going to make several parts. She even said she was going to use the money to make even more videos. You'd have to be pretty optimistic to think she's going to finish it considering it was supposed to be finished months ago. She dedicated so much time to it because she's a good salesperson.
So when she makes her second video and the third one takes several months to finish, are you going to accuse her of again jumping ship? There is no optimism to it, I just like the idea that people are innocent until proven guilty, and I don't think she has "jumped ship" just because her videos are taking longer than you personally would like them to.
How many people in this thread would have known that Sarkeesian was on CNN had thunderf00t not made a video about it.
Correction, had thunderf00t not made a video about it and had this video haven't been posted here. I wouldn't. And I get the point that they are giving her free publicity. My point still stands. There are trolls and bullies all over the internet and if they see a video about a topic where people can be easily trolled, they will go there. Feminism is one of those topics. Existence of the flaming and trolling as response to her video is proof only of those people existing, not that her theory is right. And I wouldn't call a number of people disagreeing with somebody "loosely organizing" against that person. That's like saying that the humanity is loosely organizing against Tommy Wiseau.
So when she makes her second video and the third one takes several months to finish, are you going to accuse her of again jumping ship? Maybe she didn't completely abandon the project but it's clearly not important enough for her to finish in a timely manner or even at all.

Jumping ship is synonymous with abandon, but you concede that there is atleast the possibility that it just isn't a priority? Maybe making the videos she wants to make really does take awhile. I'm not sure. But I didn't fund her series so I'm not in a position to make demands.
look i sincerely doubt anyone cares about your time management advice if you want to talk about her ideology or the concepts she explores then go ahead, but saying she's "exploiting everyone" and we're all just under the illusion is a really self-serving thing to say and will lend itself to nothing of any value
Considering how it would only take a few weeks at most to make a video of equal or greater quality, yes. There's a ton of people on youtube with significantly less production value than her that put out quality content on a pretty regular basis.

[editline]4th May 2013[/editline] series are not the same as a single video. a coherent series(esp. on analysis of video games) takes a whole lot more effort than isolated videos. that's only 1 video tho
that's only 1 video tho
And if it's part of a series, the other parts can be expected to be similar.
yea and what's your point?
