It IS a firearm guys. After he shoots it, his arms will be on fire.

He doesn't need to use axe. I think any compressed gas can would do the job. I have to give him point on his resourcefulness. It's not a skill that he'll get to use in his everyday life, but certainly if shit goes down, he'll be able to defend himself. I can just imagine his home being covered in makeshift bombs and tripmines.

Yes, hypothetically and with quite a bit of effort (than can be relatively easily fucked up) you might be able to make something that is technically a firearm and potentially kill someone. But the better question is, [I]will anyone actually do that?[/I] And, even if they do, will it be at the same rate as with conventional firearms? That's what you should be investigating. Not just "will there be any harm at all". I mean after all you can never really reduce crime/violence/etc. to zero, but you can certainly do stuff to make it happen less often.

I'm pretty sure the gun remains intact, it's just that it was very light and the recoil sent it flying off the table.
