Sonic's design is kinda ridiculous with these over the top cartoony proportions (his head is like 50% of his body mass and he has clown feet) and ridiculous vibrant colours. Whenever they try to make him do anything "cool" it just looks so out of place and forced, and it's completely impossible for me to take any of the "dark" stuff seriously. The design much better fits a kinda cutesy cartoony look, like Mania's animated opening video. Compare Sonic to something like Mario, where they've embraced how silly and fun the character designs are, so the games are mostly light hearted and vibrant, completely free of interspecies relationships and military weapons. The games feel a lot more natural and self-aware
for all the shit it got, Sonic Unleashed really nailed the human character designs for its NPCs, and it's kinda too bad they haven't had the chance to do more in the same style

Except Mario has also gotten pretty dark at some points (not nearly as SA2 or more extremely StHH though).

*humans*
They still look very weird and inconsistent when compared to Eggman which is noticeable in this cutscene.
Rather have them by stylized after this render of Eggman or some of JoeAdok's stuff.
I still think it's extremely dissonant that Sonic's universe has humans in it for some reason.
I still think it's extremely dissonant that Sonic's universe has humans in it for some reason.
Yeah this is really weird to me, too. Couldn't they design some generic animal people as citizens?
Yeah this is really weird to me, too. Couldn't they design some generic animal people as citizens?
They probably been afraid to this until Forces where it would quickly get swept under the "shitty OC's" excuse.

Jesus fucking christ that scared the shit out of me
I still think it's extremely dissonant that Sonic's universe has humans in it for some reason.
The thought of Eggman being the only human bothers me more
Yeah this is really weird to me, too. Couldn't they design some generic animal people as citizens?
unlike stuff that inspired sonic, like mickey mouse as mentioned in the video, sonic's stuck with the idea that humans are around in some way because of eggman. unlike the games, some of the external media do have animal citizens. sonic boom has a spongebob-esqe cast of background characters, the only human around is eggman. near the end of the archie comic they had both humans and animal guys as random citizens
probably the implication is there are some animal guys around (the forces OC is supposed to be just some random fuck) but maybe they decided that having bright cartoony animals you can't play as for NPCs might get confusing for gameplay reasons
[editline]15th August 2017[/editline]
honestly though I know I'm in the minority but the dissonance of a cartoony hedgehog with a real-ass gun talking with human military guys and the president is really funny to me so I don't mind it that much either way
Yeah this is really weird to me, too. Couldn't they design some generic animal people as citizens?
I don't think humans in Sonic is a new thing though.
Isn't there lore it was based off and stuff? I've heard phrases like "in the comics" before.
People have been in Sonic since at least Adventure 1

But then the Adventure era was very anime about it. Humans had big eyes and exaggerated but pseudo-realistic attempts at body shape. Boy howdy did Maria have a big ass head in Adventure 2, and then Shadow the Hedgehog turned her into an inhuman abomination with those fucking giant eyes jesus christ. '06 tried to have photorealistic humans, which is where the real problems stem from. Motion-captured humans with no expressions, Half-Life 1 levels of lip sync and mannequin-like features doing overly exaggerated motions while standing next to these fucking cartoon animals that look like emotionless dolls just didn't work at all.
Unleashed dialed it back to making all the humans exaggerated, so that Eggman not only didn't stick out like a sore thumb but also made the world more believable. And then non-Eggman humans disappeared from every single game since then anyway.

I'd take that over pre-rendered final fantasy guys any day

they only look final fantasy in the cgi
once you get in game they're the stuff of nightmares, which doesn't help the whole [sp]necrophilia bestiality revival kiss from elise to sonic[/sp] thing at the end of '06 when you've got humans as creepy as that ontop of pre-rendered cutscenes being inconsistent as fuck as to what models they use

Sonic isn't cool because Sega has had a chronic inability to provide anything useful to the world since the end of the 16-bit era. They have only themselves to blame for a series of halfway decent platformers becoming a dumpster fire of failures.

Generations?
Phantasy Star Online?
Bayonetta?
Jet Set Radio?
[sp]necrophilia bestiality revival kiss from elise to sonic[/sp]
I still don't get this complaint at all: the kiss that Elise gave to Sonic to revive him wasn't necrophilia or bestiality, not in the slightest.
If we're going by that logic Sleeping Beauty might as well be get-off material to some people.

Don't forget Yakuza, Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, House of The Dead, Super Monkey Ball, etc.
They haven't stopped making good games even if modern Sonic doesn't have a good reputation.
Honestly, Sonic never was cool to begin with, and will most likely never will be. Honestly, it just boggles the mind that he still has a fanbase at this point, considering that it is composed of autistic men in their 30's living with their mom, masturbating to inflation porn and stuffing dildos down a hotel toilet during a furry convention.

Oh look at you being all high-and-mighty there, thinking you are superior to everyone else. But listen here, you're no different from the rest of the cesspool of retardation that we call "the fandom". By the way, have you heard of capitalization?

It's just kind of fucked up to me that they promote the brand new human girl (who happened to be voiced by the first season VA of Meg from Family Guy at that) to plant an Emerald-powered kiss on a mostly-dead Sonic's lips to revive him. Even if you take the labels off from the matter, it epitomizes the very lowest point Sonic has had in the series. And I know Sonic was originally supposed to have a human girlfriend named Madonna, but to try to bring back the concept over a decade later with such an absolutely terrible character and in such.. awkward fashion was the worst concept they could've done.
It was, in essence, the anti-thesis of any idea of "cool" for Sonic. Maybe I overdid it with my initial comment, but people don't let the series live that down for a reason.
It became uncool when it became less about Sonic running through levels fast with Tails and possibly Knuckles to stop Dr. Robotnik, to Sonic wandering about a big level with a bunch of other people that no one else cared about maybe stopping Eggman but also maybe teaming up with him to stop some "greater evil."
Basically, Sonic Adventure was the stepping stone to Sonic losing his "coolness", it only got worse from there. The series didn't really become focused on the classic Sonic rhythms until Colors, when it was just back to Sonic and Tails trying to stop Eggman. Generations was good, but I feel referencing the other characters kind of hampers it a bit.
I would say SEGA still hasn't really learned what I described above, however. I mean, we had Sonic Boom, and Sonic Forces is bringing back characters we don't care about while also giving you the ability to make an "OC." If SEGA would just leave the Colors/Generations style of gameplay alone, and dial back the story and characters a bit to something more like Colors, we'd have some great modern Sonic games.

Except there's a lot of people (including myself) that still highly value these characters and don't want the series to center around just Sonic, Tails and Eggman just for nostalgia pandering?
That's like saying Mario lost its edge when characters besides Mario, Luigi, Peach and Bowser gained more spotlight when that really isn't true.
The sheer number of characters isn't a problem of itself. It's that most critics and the general audience grew tired of Sonic and his core gameplay taking something of a backseat at times to gimmicky spinoff games and all the various friends with either their numerous different playstyles or their clogging up the gameplay for artificial replayability. Big the Cat is usually the first character folks point fingers at, and yet Blaze the Cat, who is pretty much a Sonic with a glide and a fire tornado, is a fan favorite because she typically plays like a varied Sonic that has enough differences to not be an absolute retread while not being like a totally different gameplay style.
There are some genuinely questionable side characters in the roster, but the "fuck sonic's friends they ruined everything" has become too perpetuated as a spiteful meme among other things like how people think Sonic is all about fast and nothing but fast, or how Sonic was never good and so forth.

Sega doesn't develop them, just publishing them.
