do you think 3d sonic would've been less cringey if they did what nintendo did and just give him occasional grunts instead of full fledged voice acting? genuine question
do you think 3d sonic would've been less cringey if they did what nintendo did and just give him occasional grunts instead of full fledged voice acting? genuine question
I don't see any problem with the characters being fully voiced, or how that immediately makes them "cringey". Characters like Mario still have a VA and most of the time communicate through words anyways which is a step-up from simple grunts.

Sonic isn't cool. He's way past cool.
One weird trick to make sonic cool Shut his goddamn mouth Eggmen hate him!

In the RPG's he does gestures, in the mainline and party games he does voice quips at the most.

I'm aware that Sunshine was the first game in the series to have full-on voice acting (unless you count spin-offs like Mario is Missing, Hotel Mario and Mario Teaches Typing) but people still play the characters for said voice quips.

I just assume that the generalization of Sonic subtly changed as access to more progressively powerful hardware, combined with company structure harmed the character. generally Sonic is seen as a worldwide brand, and because he's actually progressed further than Mario, suddenly we're left to extravagant plots and the fear of actually expanding/utilizing the cast. the original 3 (maybe CD?, since it did introduce Amy) games did their job at actually structuring the Sonic universe with the addition of Tails and Knuckles. but unfortunately they never really did anything much with the characters from Adventure (2) onwards. even now, Knuckles is just standing there, being underutilized unless the plot absolutely requires him. also Sonic has became too much of a figurehead, the series has always been about speed. but the 3D games gives off a slightly generic feeling, no actual collectibles besides ranks (and possibly abilities) whereas before you had Rings which would be used to get access to minigames for Chaos Emeralds. Basically, Sonic needs more expression/less speaking (video points that out), but graphically has to be stunning and whimsical. whilst giving a valid spotlight to other characters that isn't just a gameplay roulette. but for actual plot-based reasons. like if Forces removed the self-insert and utilized Team Chaotix, maybe Espio loaning himself out to Eggman previously as an enforcer (for cash), to eventually rebel (after Eggman takes over the world. just to give exposition). or Tails reverting to his mechanic+hacker characterization, only utilizing that for cutscenes/boss fights. you'll still use a machineless Tails. or even -gasp, have Sonic be less invincible, introducing stages you complete with specific characters, only being able to complete them as Sonic later. A final point with Sonic plots is that they should tone down on Eggman gaining hold of some world-destructive weapon, or commanding an powerful being. Shadow was OK in this respect, since he partially existed in the past, and fuelled 2/3 games before becoming too worn as a character. Sonic's 2D exposure has been too limited before Mania however. you'd think maybe the newer handheld games should be partially-canon to the main 3D series when the games' close off its "arc". apparently the Blaze in 2006 is not the same one from Rush. seems like they really could've Skyward Sworded/Link Between Worlds the Sonic series if they elaborated on Blaze and the Sol Emeralds besides 2 games on the DS. plus there was Emerl/The Gizoid from Battle...and the rebuilt clone in Advance 3. (or the ones from the now non-canon Brotherhood) seems like Sonic could easily be plot-based for original Earth-based antagonists, as the world is literally littered with OOParts. Compare that to Mario, where his universe can be easily be slotted in wherever Nintendo wants. he barely spoke, though Nintendo had time to shine their 3D skills by the time they had the ability to explore other characters with the Gamecube. the general plots tend to just be Bowser kidnapping Peach or has some ultimate power of some kind, but because of the wide net Mario's universe has, there isn't really an issue with continuity, besides the initial characterization some characters has within spinoffs. aspects such as Luigi's cowardice and Bowser Jr actually being smart+gadget-user didn't just plop from midair. The main props Sonic has these days is voice acting that's specifically recorded for newer games in the series. whereas Mario has barely used new audio (Sunshine and Galaxy non-withstanding). though with today's climate for Sega, Sonic is probably one of their cashcows they keep around, mainly to appease the west, despite having so many other IPs they could utilize, or has already done so. (in limited conditions, like Yakuza). Maybe it's just that Mario games tends to be multi-million sellers, but they generally won't take risks. which leads to stuff like the New Super Mario Bros. subseries, you're never going to miss any sort of plot because the characters tend to remain static. the few times where they do go outside their comfort zones, they tend to be (rightfully so) considered as highpoints. Sunshine's example of graphics and giving Mario FLUDD greatly expanded Mario's repertoire of movement, whereas Galaxy felt slightly like a hybrid of Mario 64 and NSMB in the progression department, but they did smooth out Bowser/Jr's derailment/inital impressions from Sunshine and made them likable. it's also the first time Nintendo tried to make Mario more cinematic. (which did continue with 3D World, and from the looks of things, Mario Odyssey). Not that changing the tone of the series did Mario favors though. you still have black spots that the fans consider as sins. like every Yoshi game after Story because it wasn't like Island (or the fact that Nintendo has made a sequel on the DS. but made a midquel for the 3DS that retconned the ending of the Original), or the current state of the Paper Mario series post-Super (which has dialogue, and unique non-Pixl characters. later games became too caked in bile). generally the platformers can range from above average to good, whereas the spinoffs may be a more superior product, Mario & Luigi is a major case of this. though Party may be slightly miffing, as Party might have less crosspollination between various gamers, whereas Kart is one of the major "core" spinoffs which has casual appeal.
