gunplay in hl1 always felt meatier to me
the guns were loud, the impacts were very clear, the blood effects were more exaggerated, and there was gibbing
The SMG in HL1 feels like a water hose though. It just sprays all your ammo but does no damage.
The grenade launcher it has is very heavy and nice though.

Valve broke the smg with an update. It's supposed to do more damage.

When HL2 was older, the pistol had an interesting bug: if you held alt fire and primary fire, the pistol would "queue" up bullets over time. When alt fire was released, the bullets that were queued up would be fired off all at once, corresponding to how long the button was held down for. If you held it down for long enough, it would dump the entire mag into an enemy's face in an instant.
It was the best accidental weapon of all time and really fun to play with, actually. You could design a weapon around that mechanic and it would be awesome in a typical FPS.
I disagree with this guy, I think he just has more nostalgia for the first game than the second one.

Metroid Prime? :v:
Honestly SMOD is one of my favorite mods in any game because of how much meatier it makes the gunplay.
I don't really care if it's over the top or doesn't "fit" the tone, It brings it up to FEAR levels and if i have to sacrifice some consistency and tone so be it, I've played HL2 enough.
Plus you can turn off/customize a lot too and get rid of the retarded weapons.
Metroid Prime? :v:
...I hate you.
But seriously, a mechanic like that where you charge up bullets and have to trade off time and ammo for more frontloaded damage would be neat. Might not fit well with pacing, though.

That's just charging an alternate attack, not shooting off a bunch of primary attacks in an instant.
I always loved the xen part of Half-Life—blasting aliens away with the gauss gun and flying around like a mad man was a nice highlight of the game for me. The strangeness of the alien world kept my interest and made for a great time. The only part of xen that I didn't really like was the final area in the factory before you fight the nihilanth.

I still need to find a working version of SMOD some time. :v:
HL1's ever fresh gameplay is what kept me hooked on Sven Coop for hundreds of hours.
Vanilla HL2 was never much fun to me, but it is a great setting and truly shines when enjoyed through a mod like Gmod or Smod
I should get back into SC, hl1 was meh to me but SC was balls to the wall

tbh with the 2005 hl2 build being updated out of existence I'm not even sure you can
both amazing

That would explain a lot. I remember enjoying HL1 the first time I played it and I considered it better than HL2 but when I replayed HL1 on hard mode, I hated it because I tried using the SMG for mosy of the game but it was a weak piece of shit
I actually wanted to make a video on this subject sometime in the future, didn't know someone already did it haha. He mostly covers all the reasons I like Half-Life 1 more than 2 but one thing he doesn't bring up is the location of Black Mesa. I find Black Mesa to be a much more interesting location to explore than the places in Half-Life 2. And as shitty as the gameplay in Xen is the scenery is surreal enough for me to think (mostly) positive of it.

Speaking of SMOD Standalone, I think Half-Life 2: Substance and CSS SCI-FI are some of the most unique SMOD branches I've ever played. I would absolutely recommend trying both [sp]assuming you can even play CSS SCI-FI anymore[/sp].
I disagree with this guy, I think he just has more nostalgia for the first game than the second one.
I thought he said he played HL1 after HL2
I've never really returned to either game in their base form. It's always been a mod of the two that gets me coming back; more-so Sven Coop, these days, than Garry's Mod.
When it comes to Half-Life 3, though, I had always looked forward to it as the showcase of a revolutionary new game engine that broke current-gen limitations and let you do a lot more with community content than ever before.
Maybe I only care about the mods, now that I think about it..
Having played Half-Life 1 and Half-Life 2 both fairly recently, I can see where you might come to that conclusion.
Half-Life 1 has a combat focus and that gameplay holds up surprisingly well for a game nearing 20 years old, Half-Life 2 tries to do a lot more with stuff like the brand new engine and narrative. Frankly IMO Half-Life 2's narrative doesn't hold up that well, the graphics aren't incredible anymore, and the physics engine isn't nearly as revolutionary as it once was.
I'm not saying HL1 is flat out better or anything but with what both of the games were going for in mind, I think HL1 was bound to end up aging better.
I should probably mention that I've played HL2 and its mods a lot more than I have HL1, so it's entirely possible I was just sick of HL2 when I got to this last playthrough.
I enjoyed the HL1 expansions - Playing as a Barney, or playing as Shephard. Those gave HL1 alone a ton of re-playablity and the fact you are playing a different storyline and perspective it pretty cool.
The general aesthetic to Half-Life 1 is more appealing to me than Half-Life 2. Whenever I think about Half-Life 1, the one thing that always felt the best to me was the player movement.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. I'd like a 2nd Half-Life. Not a Half-Life 2, but another Half-Life game.
I liked HL1 more. I think HL1 aged better than HL2, but it's true the gravity gun it's a cool game mechanic
Plus, the spanish dubs are horrid.
Tbh BM:S makes hl1 feel better to play
hl1 is just too aged for me so a remake is pretty much the only way to go really
I have no idea why, but a lot of older games I just don't quite 'feel'. That isn't to say BM:S is better of course. I'm just too anal about graphics and all that.
To me it feels like HL2 is the "campaign" and gmod is the multipayer/sandbox mode
i'm a sucker for atmosphere and aesthetics so hl2 all the way for me
also i spent thousands of hours in gmod and various source games to the point where i still recognize the stock source engine sfx even though it has been years since i played any of the games
hl2 is my home

I went on a journey trying to get all the classics SMODs that I played back in the day, but CSS SCI FI is a really elusive one. It's moddb page not there anymore, gamefront links are dead, but if you can get it downloaded, there are a few guides here and there on how to load the CSS content.
HL1 feels a bit dull at times because of a few levels, but otherwise, its great enemy and weapon variety along with the levels that are definetly good, makes it a great game. It just lacks a bit in atmosphere, but so does HL2 in a few places.
HL2 is the other way around.
Makes great atmosphere in most levels, but makes some of those levels way too long. The canals, airboat and the coast are insufferable, especially the canals and airboat bit. Enemy variety is trash compared to the first, weapons are kind of boring and daft (smg grenade and "double barrel shotgun").
The overly long levels are the worst probably. Ravenholm was interesting, the bridge part was thrilling, Nova Prospekt starts out a bit boring but gets somewhat interesting aswell. But then we have the damn canals, airboat, almost the whole coast, the city 17 uprising part...
But by all means, each one of them is great.

For me its all about adventure and the sense of getting lost, and TBH I don't feel like I'm exploring enough in HL1 to 'feel it'
Unreal Gold seems to captivate the sense of "Not going any where, just trying to escape" than HL1, even though both games pretty much do the same thing... You're trying to escape an invaded world/facility at all costs and you have no sense of direction. HL1 feels too directed for me. they're both linear but I never quite felt like HL1 really captured my attention.
Its probably due to the fact that you go to all these wild locations in UG, with dynamic terrain and everything, they all don't really go any where specific, you're just a dude that survived a crash and is running away. In hl1 you get a lot of varying locations, however it's still somewhat familiar.
[editline]30th July 2017[/editline]
HL2 you're directed towards a location, however it does give me the sense of exploring quite well oddly enough. The locations are so far off and untouched usually that they feel really perfect to explore. The citadel is pretty much you pulling a B&E on a massive restricted area that you are not allowed in at all.
really, in hl1, the best spots for me are any area that humans don't enter + the zen areas. The really fucked up, worn out areas that are off limits and not safe for even dare devils. You should not be here, but you're here, and have to make the best of it. There are tons of areas that were meant to be populated and aren't, but they just don't feel right.

I've been trying to get this to work for days now, but I always CTD right after the valve logo.
I'd really appreciate it if anyone who knows how to fix this would PM me a solution.
