Also I'm assuming that ATGM munitions are probably impractical to wage a full-scale war with; they must cost a ton.

it's kind of weird that we live in an age where almost everybody has a mobile video camera and you can see war from a first or third person perspective all the time
Mustve been a pretty bad crew for them not to see a tank drive right infront of them and take a few seconds to aim and fire, the turret looked like it was facing their way the whole time too.

Even with modern systems it still takes time for the crew to locate, aim, and shoot at a tank. I recall that the record time from detection to shot was 8 seconds.
