Ahh, CNN. Saving the world from misogyny and the hacker known as "4-Chan".
I lost my shit at 'she was bound to fail because she was an asian woman' and twice over at the accusations of misogyny so easily shoehorned into the conversation. Also 'basement underground cesspool of human nature on the internet' oh my god
"Alot of the community wasn't going to like her because she was an asian women"
White men have been shown to like asian women alot.
Did they just say that people hated (or rejected) her because she is an Asian Woman? Wow. Edit: Double Ninja'd, jesus.
Did they just say that people hated (or rejected) her because she is an Asian Woman? Wow.
Gotta ride that controversy profits.
What the fuck is this obsession recently with internet culture being misogynistic/racist/terrible, outside of bad apples, morons and poe's law, internet (and gaming, and geek) culture is inherently progressive. It's so fucking ironic hearing a mainstream news channel stuck in the 60s accuse others of being socially conservative. The internet is a world where people are free to be who they are, there's no limits and that causes some issues and is worth discussing but the freedom the internet brings makes us inherently progressive. Then there's the outsider's refuge argument. Maybe it's worth hearing Cristina Hoff Sommers or Extra Credits talk on the subject, pretty sure they both made videos on this.
It's sad that I don't even have to watch the video to know what reasons they are.
It's sad that I don't even have to watch the video to know what reasons they are.
Reddit getting the Gamergate treatment will probably enlighten a few people.
well reddit really does have a man cave feel, and it also has a noticeable community of anti feminists/misogynists and the most common way of calling ellen pao was chairman pao, totally not racially charge. and a lot of the comments directed at her were sexist in nature as well. you can argue that ellen pao was a poor CEO, but pretending as if none of the attacks weren't based on her race and gender is pretty dumb, they aren't mutually exclusive.
Reddit getting the Gamergate treatment will probably enlighten a few people.
This is probably all good in the long run, the people who oppose this crap are the people who absolutely refuse to understand it anyway and we don't need their approval. Everyone else will come around eventually.
ellen pao was chairman pao, totally not racially charge.

Telling racist or sexist jokes doesn't automatically make you racist/sexist.
Like honestly. Do you think Reddit would have had a competent Asian CEO resign?
well reddit really does have a man cave feel, and it also has a noticeable community of anti feminists/misogynists and the most common way of calling ellen pao was chairman pao, totally not racially charge. and a lot of the comments directed at her were sexist in nature as well. you can argue that ellen pao was a poor CEO, but pretending as if none of the attacks weren't based on her race and gender is pretty dumb, they aren't mutually exclusive.
Reddit had it's reasons for hating Pao and those reasons were more than "she's a women and she's Asian". I know you're not, but don't discount a worthwhile cause because a minority are using it as an excuse to be cunts. Same with GamerGate, the danger of the internet is also it's greatest strength, don't let that affect your judgement on a topic. If you believe Pao was crap, she was crap, regardless of some arsehat's racism.
Not to mention calling someone racial slurs does not mean you hate them because of their race. It's just something that can be used to easily insult and offend. The actual reason for why this is happening don't have to be racially motivated at all.
and the most common way of calling ellen pao was chairman pao, totally not racially charge.
While I'm sure this pun was racially founded, the name just rhymes really fucking well with Mao. And English speakers love their rhymes/puns.
Not to mention calling someone racial slurs does not mean you hate them because of their race.
People making French jokes about Max probably don't actually hate french people.
People making French jokes about Max probably don't actually hate french people.
Except the British ones.
so who replaced Pao as CEO or have they not decided yet?
so who replaced Pao as CEO or have they not decided yet?
One of the co-creators of reddit. Forget his name.
well reddit really does have a man cave feel, and it also has a noticeable community of anti feminists/misogynists and the most common way of calling ellen pao was chairman pao, totally not racially charge. and a lot of the comments directed at her were sexist in nature as well. you can argue that ellen pao was a poor CEO, but pretending as if none of the attacks weren't based on her race and gender is pretty dumb, they aren't mutually exclusive.
"Chairman pao" isnt racist tho
While I'm sure this pun was racially founded, the name just rhymes really fucking well with Mao. Someone out to insult you will always try to use the thing that hurts you most, which is probably what you are.
I actually didn't know Pao was asian until this thread. Go figure.
At least they're civilized in their ignorance, remember clips like this from Fox news, where people with faces made entirely of botox are just angrily shouting at each other in agreement?
I doubt it's ignorance, not on this big of a scale and no so shortly after they were riding the "REDDIT REVOLUTION!!!" hypestorm. I had my doubts when they were on the consumerist side during the beginning, but now I know for sure, these guys do and say whatever sells the best - Pao peacefully stepping down in response to Board concerns doesn't create as much discussion/ad revenue as Pao getting driven out of town by satanic goobergaters. Even we, right now, are giving them publicity and views just by talking about how dumb they are. It's a shame that this is what's going in the history books, but at the very least Pao did resign and there's someone infinitely more qualified in her place.
Ahh, CNN. Saving the world from misogyny and the hacker known as "4-Chan".
4-chan man is a serious issue guy, that man is a threat
Yes every issue in the world is either sexism/racism/any form of discrimination There is no other issues present in the world and these are the cause for all issues, right guys?
I thought the whole thing started when Victoria was fired? Everyone loved Victoria and they blamed the CEO for her being let go. How can that possibly be misogyny?
I thought the whole thing started when Victoria was fired? Everyone loved Victoria and they blamed the CEO for her being let go. How can that possibly be misogyny?
There was also a lot of unrest over the banning of /r/FatPersonHate Either way this had nothing to do with racism or misogyny
I thought the whole thing started when Victoria was fired? Everyone loved Victoria and they blamed the CEO for her being let go. How can that possibly be misogyny?
Everything is misogyny you sexist pig. Really though, that, she's a women she got shouted out.
It's funny to me that they even brought race into it. Yishan Wong was an asian male that ran Reddit before Pao, and nobody ever complained about him because of his race. Clearly it's only because she's both a woman and Asian. The entire Pao-hate shit was super fucking overblown and harassment and making 50 different subreddits based on "PaoIsACunt" and "ChairmanPao" and other shit was just sort of childish and immature and gross, but I very much doubt the overall revolt was because she was an asian woman. The revolt started because they fired a woman - if reddit was genuinely misogynist as a whole, they'd be happy that fewer women worked at Reddit.
