CNN calls Reddit a "cesspool", but for all the wrong reasons.

reddit is super liberal with a young progressive community
cnn is an incompetent 24/7 olds network completely out of touch with reality and completely anything that could be called testicles which is why they lose to fox news every fucking time

Its pretty obvious that they only asked reddit corporate and some professional sjw culture expert before making the story.

I find it hard to believe that conservatives are only listening to the viewpoints of the extreme left, but I guess that's horseshoe theory.

Less so about their beliefs and moreso about them being some kind of expert on internet culture. CNN doesn't know anything about this so they go to an expert.

Except the white supremacy subreddit has a higher population than Stormfront.

reddit isn't a community any more than vbulletin is a community
it's a collection of small, specific interest-focused subforums that aren't really that interconnected at all, especially when it comes to beliefs
i mean reddit had /r/fatpeoplehate and then it had /r/gonewildcurvy and a million other porn subs for overweight people
Except the white supremacy subreddit has a higher population than Stormfront.
That's a separate thing, Reddit isn't a community it's the front page of the internet, a portal to communities. Be that gaming communities or racist cunt bags being racist cunt bags.
Clearly it's only because she's both a woman and Asian.
If someone actually uses this argument, they're just willfully ignoring the straw that broke the camel's back: Victoria was fired from reddit. A woman.
(As a note, the quote presented is out of context and was sarcasm on .Isak.'s part.)
Except the white supremacy subreddit has a higher population than Stormfront.
Reddit has an entire userbase half the size of the third most populous country in the world and is one of the biggest names in the digital world. About 2.35% of the world population uses Reddit in some form.
well reddit really does have a man cave feel, and it also has a noticeable community of anti feminists/misogynists
and the most common way of calling ellen pao was chairman pao, totally not racially charge. and a lot of the comments directed at her were sexist in nature as well.
you can argue that ellen pao was a poor CEO, but pretending as if none of the attacks weren't based on her race and gender is pretty dumb, they aren't mutually exclusive.
It's indiscriminate, only based on her actions and not her identity. Otherwise, you wouldn't see other figures like Bobby Kotick, Ben Affleck, Joss Whedon, Uwe Boll, or Gabe Newell being harassed.
Other female CEOs like Mitchell Baker weren't harassed either.
What the fuck is this obsession recently with internet culture being misogynistic/racist/terrible, outside of bad apples, morons and poe's law, internet (and gaming, and geek) culture is inherently progressive. It's so fucking ironic hearing a mainstream news channel stuck in the 60s accuse others of being socially conservative.
The internet is a world where people are free to be who they are, there's no limits and that causes some issues and is worth discussing but the freedom the internet brings makes us inherently progressive. Then there's the outsider's refuge argument. Maybe it's worth hearing Cristina Hoff Sommers or Extra Credits talk on the subject, pretty sure they both made videos on this.
I greatly dislike how the press adopted the tactics of Faux News. I feel like they intentionally ignore every other variable that contradicts the statement or conspiracy theory that they're trying to push.

I wouldn't say it was completely indiscriminate - there's a reason "Chairman Pao" was chosen over any hundred of other dictator jokes you could make, and it was partly because she was Asian. It's the same way that people making fun or criticizing Gabe Newell or steam basically always use fat jokes - because he's fat. It has nothing to do with the fact that Half-Life 3 isn't out yet - it's just because that's his image. Bobby Kotick got made fun of his for his lifeless devil eyes, even though that had literally nothing to do with his ability to run a company. Unrelated image-based criticism.
The difference is that it wasn't primarily motivated by her being an asian woman - it was motivated by her actions and the changes that reddit was instituting. Yes, her being an asian woman was a part of how the criticism was enacted (very childishly and vaguely racist), but it wasn't why she was being criticized, which is the major difference between racism/misogyny and mass criticism.
If she had made no major changes and done nothing at all to change the status quo, she wouldn't have been attacked. People also rabidly criticized Alexis Ohanian, a white man, for his comments on the entire thing. It wasn't racially-focused, but yes, it was vaguely racially-tainted.
I wanna see Facepunch get called bigots on CNN. It'll make me feel special.

that's different though
they'd be 100% right
misogyny for the most incorrectly applied word of the year, 2014 and 2015

It's not really "separate" when it's clearly shown that the majority of the people manufacturing this "chair PAO" idiocy were regulars at coontown and KiA.
Reddit getting the Gamergate treatment will probably enlighten a few people.
You can look for yourself and see that the subs most active in the issue were coontown, kia, src, and redpill and that throughout it frequent posters from most of those were crossposting and spreading the same messages into other subs, even ones that had nothing to do with it, or you can just keep projecting.
Reddit's by no means one unified community, but it's obvious which aspects of it were the most vocal in this conflict.

which white supremacy subreddit?

Well let's see, the current stickies on SRC are from users whose recent activity (aside from SRC) is r/conspiracy and r/european (a lesser known white supremacy sub), the person who first reported the removal of FPH on SRC is a frequenter to redpill, and the one reporting on her loss of the discrimination lawsuit was from mensrights, the head of r/paoyongyang also comes from coontown, the one from paoinaction is from conspiracy and kia, and the majority of the top posters in those subs who don't have similar backgrounds appear to be sockpuppets as they have no background at all.
and the majority of the top posters in those subs who don't have similar backgrounds appear to be sockpuppets as they have no background at all.
Or lurkers. And throwaway accounts because getting your main shadowbanned sucks. But nah. Sockpuppets. Again with the omnipresent demonic sockpuppets. Shit, at this point soon enough you'll have a hard time finding a genuine user in between all these sockpuppets that make up the entirety of all internet shitstorms, from both sides too. Sockpuppet legions ducking it out with strawman armies.
I love how she started off with all the legitimate reasons for why people disliked her intensely, and then just plonked in 'and she's an asian woman'

It's possible, although there's really no difference between a throwaway and a sockpuppet, it just seems awfully convenient that there are several people in those subs whose accounts date back to right around the start of various recent dramas and have posted in nothing but subs about those dramas rubberstamping the majority opinion.

Even if it was started by racist subreddits (and totally unrelated gamergate ones??) , the fact that many of those posts got tens of thousands of upvotes and consistently landed on the frontpage shows that it was popular with the majority of the site and not only the ~15k subscribers of /r/coontown.
I agree that a lot of the posts and subreddits (like /r/paoyongyang) were offensive and dumb and childish, but the fact that the frontpage was filled with almost nothing but anti-pao rhetoric shows that it wasn't some isolated misogynist group trying to get rid of her. The fact that numerous default subreddits (unconnected to racist subs, redpill, or gamergate subs) decided to entirely shut down operations after Victoria's firing is enough of a hint that moderators of all types were annoyed at reddit's admins.

You can tell someone isn't worth listening to when they start using "sockpuppet" seriously.
Although that might just be my bias to how people used it in the GG stuff coming out.
