You must be right!
im glad you're finally starting to listen to reason
Usually, when a woman is presented as a warrior in some piece of fiction or folklore, they represent her has a weird outlier that forms the basis of the entire premise of the story. Like "Weird woman who becomes a warrior and goes into a normally male world" For instance, Mulan tells this story. It's the classic fish out of water tale. Or the woman is a god or something. Or it's just a piece of sexy fantasy to appeal to men, like Lara Croft or Metroid to a lesser extent. Overwatch having about 50% of the warriors in the game being women, and that being presented as a completely normal situation, is where it gets disconnected from our core ideas in reality. But I suppose Overwatch is kind of a sexy fantasy for men. (I'm not a big fan of that trope being applied personally)
There are literally several on that list that are based on real individuals who were not considered "weird outliers". This is in addition to multiple war goddesses, some like Athena, whom were major parts of their pantheon. Then you have the Shieldmaidens of Scandinavian and Germanic myth. This is only an issue because you make it one.
More grade school shaming from the intellectuals of facepunch. You so condescendingly put-down opposing viewpoints! You must be right!

"GUYS ITS 2016, I DONT HAVE TO ARGUE" You lefties become the parodies we make of you.
One good shaming deserves another I suppose. I almost feel like a fish from all this bait.
Hey guys what do you think about Overwatc...
At a deep level, we like art to reflect the general truths about gender relations and general characters each gender expresses in our real lives. When something breaks that character, like what happens when you have a female soldier, it feels off. It's not just a superficial thing, making the choice to be a warrior for your people, and women just have not and aren't not meant to do it.
please don't use "we" when you pull something completely from your own ass thats only relative to your experience. "At a deep level", like, who are you joking? You undermined art that "feels off" when it's what some artists aim to create for their whole life. Not to mention, if an art piece (and I mean we're talking about goddamn overwatch lmao) feels off to you because women are empowered in it, you must be pretty fragile. When something as petty as a fictive woman soldier makes you uncomfortable and make you feel like something's off, i don't get how can you stay sane when experiencing any form of media or art. Swapping gender roles or putting a character in a role that's unnatural to them literally has to be one of the mildest "strange" thing you could do when creating media. You live in a tiny world shaped by your narrow experience.
Yeah I went into Overwatch with a negative mindset over the 2 day free weekend. I pre-ordered after playing for 5 hours. The game is insanely fun and the $40 price tag helps a lot. And are people still going on about SJW Zarya insert? Zarya is literally Heavy Weapons Girl, she says shit like STRONG LIKE RUSSIAN BEAR! and she was added so that not every female character in the game was a shapely knockout with big asses and tits. The pink hair is just for visual identification so you can pick her out quicker.

Holy fuck what have I started?!
Holy fuck what have I started?!
You monster
It is unrealistic to see them in a war zone. In my years in the marines we all knew it was bad news when we'd meet a woman in the forces. But this is all besides the point.
I bet that's why you were dishourably discharged [editline]23rd April 2016[/editline]
Also because she was based off of an actual Blizzard employee But yeah, people that think pink hair/not a bombshell = SJW pandering are silly.
I never knew why people hated dyed, short hair. It looks cool and rad as shit.
I never knew why people hated dyed, short hair. It looks cool and rad as shit.
Some people have come to refer to it as the female equivalent of the fedora. I wouldn't say it's an entirely inaccurate comparison.
Some people have come to refer to it as the female equivalent of the fedora. I wouldn't say it's an entirely inaccurate comparison.
I don't agree. Probably 1/5 girls in the region I live in have their hair dyed. When I walk around the mall I work at, there's a lot of purple, blue hair, and an absurd amount of that fake grey hair colour. Fedora's are a dead fashion item now. Died hair seems normal.
Never have I seen a thread side-tracked by one person so well in my time here.
All Overwatch is, is a streamlined version of TF2, with all its new weapons added through the years, split into new classes. It really doesn't offer much new, what it does offer is from the 2007 shooter, TF2. Not a 90s shooter. Also, a lot of the heroes are really boring, and they just are padding to add more characters. They could have culled it down more. And it has a ton of problems with the amount of women in the game. It just makes it feel silly an unrealistic. (Especially the butch lesbian)
Let's assume you're right when you say that it doesn't offer much new (since everything else you said is just plain wrong) So what? Does a game need to be completely new and unheard of? [editline]24th April 2016[/editline]
I never knew why people hated dyed, short hair. It looks cool and rad as shit.
Looks bad af for women, but thats just my opinion. And that's short hair I'm talking about. Dyed short hair just sounds like a cry for attention to me. Dyed hair in general is a cry for attention then again... Blonde? Yeah sure, lots of people do it because they like it or because the ex of their better half was a blonde (that saddly happens). Red? Seems like a bandwagon for milky white women, which I also don't get because they mostly look like they had some sickness to them, but sure, I get the appeal aswell. But weird colors like purple and blue and mixes of highlights with weird colors like that? That's just weird and unnappealing most of the times. Again, my opinion, but... It's a bit too odd.
As much as I love TF2, Overwatch does look like a really nice fresh breath of air. Has there been anything said about how modifiable Overwatch is? I can't see it living as long as TF2 if you can't make custom content.
If Overwatch can be modded with new cosmetics and weapons, this could be even better than the awful TF2 updates combined. Have the VA's shell out new dialogue for holidays and I'm sold!
Society evolved towards having social norms which encouraged individuals to follow their specific gender roles. It operated in this fashion for thousands of years, with a culture of people seeing each gender a specific way, and generalizing. I dont know why people think we can throw away such a fundamental aspect of our past society without considering the possibility that the new mode of cultural thinking could be worse. [editline]23rd April 2016[/editline] "GUYS ITS 2016, I DONT HAVE TO ARGUE" You lefties become the parodies we make of you.
Honestly this is such a weak argument because there are plenty of things that were fundamental t our past growing as a society that are just not necessary now. You're argument is that, if it worked before than it should keep working. Rather than adapt to an evolving society you seek to regress. what you're suggesting is a lack of freedom. You're literally assigning random symptoms of society to the fact that Women aren't staying in gender roles with no correlation. I could think of plenty of reasons for all of these. Declining Birth Rates - People realizing they're tied down when they have kids and it affects their career and life choices. Rampant Suicide + Loss of Motivation + Nihilism - Our high anxiety, high stress culture because we must stay incrdibly competitive in an ever growing population in jobs that have no greater meaning or purpose to the worker. (This is talked about in a TED talk I'll have to find the name of where studies find people work harder when they feel that their work is actually contributing to the company.) And perhaps the internet causing many young teens to see suicidal behavior garner attention. I'm sorry but I'm always looking to see the other side and critically think but everything you've argued so far is weak.
Please stop! I'm sorry I started this thread OK?!
stuff
He's banned. No need to continue the shitfest.
So is anybody else going to Taco Bell more frequently because the have Overwatch Cups and a chance to win the game?

There's a discussion to be had about differences of sexes and genders However by starting the discussion with "Traditional western gender roles are truth. I'm a proud sexist." entirely kills the possibility for any productive resolution.
