There's a whole lot of not-getting-the-joke in here. I laughed my ass off.
Seriously, that's my whole joke. Why does nobody get it?
Hey man, nothing beats the classics
A classic would be like Cowboy Bebop, Lucky star is a generic shoujo anime about food.
[Citation needed]
From what I can find people say the average cost of something like Spongebob Squarepants is around the $200,000 to $300,000 per episode range. I can't find any hard numbers on it, but I'm willing to bet it's a good approximation. i have a sorta kinda source on anime budget numbers. http://washiblog.wordpress.com/2011/01/18/anime-production-detailed-guide-to-how-anime-is-made-and-the-talent-behind-it/ yeah it's a blog, whatever the point is, as this kind and hopefully reputable fellow points out, something like Full Metal Alchemist works with a budget of $4,895,000. Split that up into 52 parts and that leaves you with $94,000 washingtons per episode. And remember, Spongebab is and was a budget cartoon. Stuff like Invader Zim wrecked the bank. Point is, anime creators really do work with practically nothing. I may not know the hard numbers on nickelodean's stuff, but I know personally that Wakfu, some weird French production for weirdos and losers I happen to like, was sold to the network at 4,000,000 for 26 episodes. And it was all tweened and computer magicked and stuff. And even then I might be remembering it as dollars instead of euros, which would just make the discrepancy all that much wider. You get what I mean. I would want to make a comparision to Persepolis ot The Illusionist, but that's not American. Has there even been a western animated movie aimed for adults that actually tried to be serious or mature?
fire and ice? cool world? beowulf?
Oh, the guy who did 5 Centimeters Per Second. I completely forgot about him. That explains the absurd level of detail.
His movies are awesome.

I dislike anime based on the idea that most characters are the same damn person with different colored eyes/hair and different outfits give or take a few unique scars. It all just looks too similar for me.
Hey man, nothing beats the classics
7 years old is considered a classic? The fuck?
I dislike anime based on the idea that most characters are the same damn person with different colored eyes/hair and different outfits give or take a few unique scars. This is kinda funny considering that in most anime, 90% of the scenes have extremely minimal animation. There's usually like 1 or 2 scenes that are full animated and then they're really fucking nice, but most of the time it's just a still frame with either a panning camera or a mouth on a character moving.
His movies are awesome.
Makoto Shinkai has perfected the principle of eye porn.
They have a ton of automated processes that scan your video for copyrighted content as it is uploaded. Having people sift through billions of hours of video manually to figure out what is fair use is a ridiculous waste of time and resources glorious nippon folded animes
I couldnt make it past 25 secs, I dont understant how this can be praised
I couldnt make it past 25 secs, I dont understant how this can be praised
The theme songs of anime don't do a very good job of representing a show. Listen to Cruel Angel Thesis and then start watching Evangelion to have the complete shit smacked out of you due to the absolute contrast.
His movies are awesome.
I wasn't aware he had done other movies. I'll definitely get around to watching them. On an off-topic note: nice avatar. [editline]26th April 2014[/editline]
Makoto Shinkai has perfected the principle of eye porn.
5 wallpapers per second.

If you look at shows for more than five seconds or actually watch anime, you'd notice. Just because it doesn't have the wild differences that cartoons have doesn't mean there isn't a lot. Just gonna get it out of the way even if these sort of images are already posted. You do of course get conversations that are just minimal animation with lip flap to save budget for scenes that require movement for most stuff but then you get some anime that have constant movement even with mundane actions, and even in most anime that have more than a minimal budget you don't get "90% of little to no animation". Generalisations are dumb.
minus the fact that even the cheapest american cartoons do it
Budgets for Western animation studios are considerably higher in comparison to Japanese studios and most western shows deal with very stylised art [editline]26th April 2014[/editline] anime is stylished to hell too but general proportions are much more similar to real humans and it's more common for them to use a variety of perspectives when doing work
I wasn't aware he had done other movies. I'll definitely get around to watching them.
I don't know what you have seen of his, but Children who Chase lost voices is also eye porn but also has an enjoyable story to it that wouldn't be out of place in a Ghibli movie. It's definitely worth checking out.
On an off-topic note: nice avatar.
I can't help but think there's some bias in this.
Damn kids what with your video tags and Walkmans and the like
I've been meaning to watch ghost in the shell for years but that just convinced me.
I've been meaning to watch ghost in the shell for years but that just convinced me. That fight scene was pretty fucking phenomenal.
It's a fucking great movie that is worthy of being watched.
Seriously, that's my whole joke. Why does nobody get it?
Because this is the internet and somebody insulted the animus Which is great because it isn't even insulting, just funny. Welcome to the internet.
Budgets for Western animation studios are considerably higher in comparison to Japanese studios and most western shows deal with very stylised art
There are reasons for why western animation studios have higher budgets. The "anime style" is intentionally designed to be cheap and easy to animate. And animators are paid dirt, which allows an anime episode to generally run under $100k/episode. Whereas in the west, you have to pay animators a living salary and aren't outsourced to Koreans most of the time.
I can't help but think there's some bias in this.
Unyu
The video's pretty fucking funny man, I'm amazed at how many people actually think it's legitimate criticism.
why not love both american and japanese animation why we fight
I've been meaning to watch ghost in the shell for years but that just convinced me. That fight scene was pretty fucking phenomenal.
gits is seriously one in a million [editline]26th April 2014[/editline] but so is spongebob

Animation studios in Japan are notorious for taking advantage of their workers. It's no secret they work long ass hours and get paid pennies.
minus the fact that even the cheapest american cartoons do it
Japan focuses on the figure entirely, as opposed to facial expressions. It's why you see characters moving on the Z axis instead of the "x->y" broadway movement. It's mostly safe to say that they were influenced by the visuals/themes in western contemporary films instead of the acting in western performance art. Early disney films were heavily influenced by performance art. It most cases, they do double the work in comparison to western animators, performing layout (characters, effects, composition, camera movement). Here's a set of interesting tweets from people who work in the industry.
