They could have. But I doubt they would have the ships they have now in 4 years. Honestly most of the UNSC tech felt like it should be around 20 years after Halo 3 not 4.
When a Human scientist and a Sanghelli scientist put their sciences together they get something that forwards their technology by a lot. Seriously that can easily be said about why the UNSC not has potable Gauss rifles, better armor, more curves and such.

That ending was stellar.
Doesn't help it the fact tha it looks stupid as fuck.
Agreed.
I really do wonder if the art direction's complete change was mere stylistic choice or the artists wanting to do something new? Like if they cared for continuity or just wanted to make some new stuff without knowing or caring for the context? I'm sure it can't be that bluntly disregarding, but I like to think the previous Halo games were sort of a 'hard' sci-fi in aesthetic, and Halo 4 was just a jump onto this whole 'sleek' sci-fi style that everyone hates. Like Kommrad said, it's only been four years canonically. Even with the Elites working with Humanity (mind you, ONI tried to start a civil war amongst them so that they never got an opportunity to possibly rise up and be a threat again), it's downright implausible that what was left of humanity just suddenly bounced back from the brink, completely and utterly redesigned their entire structure of gear, weaponry and ships, and were able to make the Infinity to boot. Nearly the entire continent of Africa, apparently a significant centerhold of the human race in this verse, was glassed. That shit wore off eventually on Planet Reach, but it probably took a damn long while after the war ended for humanity to revisit and re-inhabit the planet again. But nope, artstyle and a couple new books take presidence over everything else, suddenly humanity got back on its feet, Chief had nanomachines restructuring his armor, apparently all the new Spartans are inexplicably based off this armor, and otherwise.
It looks like a ship version of the fucking railgun with some tacked on stuff [t]http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20121117115806/halo/images/a/a8/H4_railgun_trans.png[/t]
The reason it probably looks like that is because the main weapon on a UNSC ship is a MAC, a big-ass railgun. It needs a lot of linear space to run up to speed, and it would make sense that UNSC ships are long and pointy. The new forward unto dawn would make perfect sense if its a new ship class, and looks like a more detailed version of old UNSC designs, but makes zero sense as a complete switcheroo replacement. I do agree that the pelican is pants-on-head retarded though [editline]22nd July 2013[/editline]
I really do wonder if the art direction's complete change was mere stylistic choice or the artists wanting to do something new? "so yeah, we couldn't be assed to come up with an actual reason or use the original suit, so how about we effectively use magic machines that nobody can see and that have never been seen in Halo before to cover our fuck-up?"
I can't believe how often the cheif is presented as perhaps dead.
the pelicans in this look like halo 3s, not 4's [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FV7ckOTXpMI[/hd]
the pelicans in this look like halo 3s, not 4's [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FV7ckOTXpMI[/hd]
That's because it's set sometime between Halo 3 and Halo 4, So the new pelican's aren't being used yet. I just found out that work began on the UNSC Infinity in 2537, so it makes absolutely no sense that it doesn't really fit in with the rest of the UNSC designs.
I hated the whole new cyber enemies with a passion. They were terrible. I want to fight the Covenant, or play as them. Preferably both.
So you don't even find out what the chief looks like? And he went from standing next to people, to towering over people in what seemed like the final cutscenes how do what do what
To be fair Chief has always been tall as hell. Just not 10 feet tall.
I still don't understand why 343i felt the need to redesign absolutely everything for no reason.
I still don't understand why 343i felt the need to redesign absolutely everything for no reason.
That's what happens what you get an art director that thinks he's a special little snowflake.
Chief should only be about a head taller than the soldiers, why the fuck was he so tall he could have banged his head on the roof of the pelican hangar
Scannin for da ice cream its over there ~bweeeerrr~
What's the song at 6:35 anyway?

IT WAS ME THE WHOLE TIME
That's what happens what you get an art director that thinks he's a special little snowflake.
Had I been the director at 343i I would have fired him once I saw how they changed everything. I'm alright with updating things, but all of the aesthetics of... everything in Halo 4 is atrocious. The levels don't have enough colour, but the armour is fullbright. And looks awful in it's own right. Oh and the Prometheans altogether.

Even the Prometheans have glowing lights all over them. 343 didn't get anything right with Halo 4, i really hope Halo 5 changes a few things back to how they were before.
I love how sort of "Powerful but ancient" Forerunner architecture looked before. Now it looks like you're fighting in some sort of generic alien superstructure.
Whether or not I get an Xbox One, I'm not going to play the next Halo games. I'm just going to wait for these videos.
with all the shitty redesigns aside cortana was a pretty fine piece of ass

I loved that.
Exploring Halo 1-3 Forerunner installations was like exploring old human ruins, except much more high tech. I loved that.
And if you think about it from that context, old human ruins were probably based off of the Forerunner installations loosely within the series. Now it just clashes horribly with the rest of the series.
I honestly can't think of a positive thing Halo 4 brought to the campaigns of the previous games. Some of the new weapons were nice, I guess. But everything else was really a step back. The shitty UNSC design, the fucking TRON Forerunners, nonsense retcons and ham-handed story items. A weird love plot analogue between Cortana and the Chief, and that horrendous "Boss fight". Oh well, Halo 3 will be free soon enough, I guess we can just go back to circle jerking about that.
The soundtrack was good.
I forgot that 343i changed the UNSC emblem from this to this [T]http://images.wikia.com/rvb/images/7/7b/UNSC_insignia_(post-war).png[/T] [editline]24th July 2013[/editline]
The soundtrack was good.
I thought it was pretty forgettable save for a few tracks.
