I think the biggest reason people didn't like Far Cry 3's story so much was that it took itself too seriously it needed to embrace being a dumb B movie story and just roll with it instead of trying to make it serious
They should've just gone full Turok and kept the guns and vehicles in the pre-historic setting. That would be pretty rad.
Have something like Terra Nova or Dino Crisis where a group of humans where sent back in time to found a colony and have to put up with a constant onslaught of dino's and nature fighting back. It would work well with the open world nature at least.

After how fucking ludicrously over the top the Sinking the Ship mission is (spoilers for FarCry 3, and a specific time into the video), I came to the conclusion that not only was FarCry 3 aware of how ridiculously over the top it was, but that it was a living, breathing satire of action movies. I find FarCry 3 masterfully written for that alone. It is exactly what I think a satire should be: take an absolutely bizarre premise, but then populate it with real people behaving as if that bizarre premise is normal. I personally think that anyone who thinks FarCry 3 takes itself seriously isn't sitting far enough back to realize just how much it's making fun of itself. And there's nothing wrong with that - the best satires are ones done so well you don't even realize it's a satire at first. The game is committed, 100%, to its absurdity.

Actually it did take it self seriously, ask the writers. It's why it got the shit that it did, cause all that earnest "dilemma" shit was batshit awful, yet the writers defended the hell out of it on twitter. The real premise here is not "why aren't the drivers and support ready" (I mean did we already forget assassin's creed that quickly?). The premise is "why do you continue to buy products from a company that continues to openly gouge full price paying customers at every turn?" Baffling.

There was effort involved, and it makes the whole game enjoyable throughout.
Either way you shine a light on it, I'm still gonna despise Jason's friends with a burning passion.
That's the point.
I know, but I don't think that's a inherently good thing. It should be like a "I like to hate them" thing, not a, I hate them to the point where I'd rather just leave them to slavery by butt pirates because of how they annoy me.
