I'm not a big fan of electronic music but I know that genuine DJing takes a lot of skill. These guys are basically just the equivalent of those assholes who buy an acoustic guitar and then talk-sing over the only four chords they bothered learning.
um that guy is literally pressing one key to the beat of the track? regardless i think its a silly comparison. you're comparing a dude on a single midi as part of a large ensemble to the performance of a single person who has electronically produced an entire track. you're asking for very different things really if you wanna see some contemporary bands that go hard on midis and synths as part of a live performance then you should probably be looking at the indie pop scene really
basically just want this to be an experience, there could also be 9 keyboards guy producer and friends
Most big DJs like those have pre recorded sets because they're lazy wankers, just watch a set by someone like Madeon who actually performs it with a launchpad instead of the generic traktor gear.
Madeon is no different now you know, he's started to do more and more pre recorded sets. He still uses a monome but not as much anymore, because you know, it still takes effort.
get wrecked homie
thats just old fashioned turntablism this kind of djing isn't the stuff in question
okay fine if you guys want non-festival turntablism here ya go and if you want CDJ proficiency then here better first person cam here of a different set, same dj
"my own personal music taste tells me this sounds like shit so obviously nobody else is allowed to think it sounds good" you're probably the kind of guy that likes avicii
Lmao you're such a hypocrite First you post that A-trak video implying that it's better than what the DJ's in OP can do, and then you bitch about people posting their opinions. I go to a concert to listen to music I enjoy and be entertained. I don't care how much 'concentration' it takes for the DJ to carry out his set, I'm not there to evaluate his technique on the turntable. IMO that video that you posted sounds like shit, and I'd listen to a pre-mixed Aoki track over it any day. If you like A-trak's live performance, that's your perogative. But don't insult people for having their own opinions about music. The way you blatantly call out Avicii fans make you sound like a total cunt
oh ok i'd like to see you do it half as good as he does if it's "just mixing up parts of the tracks" and "making them repeat/chop"
And this was a stupid statement. I don't need to be a pro in ableton to tell you that a track sounds like shit
In terms of technical skill, it is better. I never said I don't enjoy sets outside of turntablism, some of the best sets i've ever heard were performed on CDJs. and the avicii thing was more implying that he's the kind of guy that's like "holy fuck avicii is the best dj ever *_*", avicii does have some decent songs though. whatever though
Any sort of argument in this thread is a joke though, and it's been covered a thousand times before. Aoki is an entertainer. Nobody gives a fuck what he does on stage, they go to his concerts to be entertained. That's why stuff like this can fly: I payed money to go to his concert and had a good time. If you're some elitist who thinks that the only artist worth respect are ones who actively mix everything on stage... that's your problem. Have fun being butthurt, cause it's only gonna get worse from here. That being said, I found OP's video pretty hilarious.
i literally just said i'm not an elitist bud i'm a bedroom dj and i do my stuff the exact same way guys like aoki, guetta, and a ton of others do, i dont claim to be any better than them, and I likely won't be better than them ever EDM is EDM, and I love edm, no matter how it's being delivered
knobs touching knobs
I get paid anywhere from $300 - $500 just to do this. What a great job!

I've never met anyone at the 30+ concerts and festivals i've gone to in the last 3-4 years that thought the DJs were skilfully live mixing, everyone understands that 99% of the big setlists are prerecorded but no one gives a shit. We're all there to experience the crowd, the music, the alcohol and have a good time. If i wanted to go to a concert to be impressed i'd go to a small venue with a lesser known DJ who live mixes and beat juggles and mull around there instead; but i don't. Most people don't. Cuz most people don't really give two shits. And as funnybunny said, i still find that video funny as hell. Every DJ these days always does the hands in the air, little two step hop thing when the beat drops. Random knob turning which clearly isn't doing shit all.
Live electronic music thread? Live electronic music thread.
Most big DJs like those have pre recorded sets because they're lazy wankers, just watch a set by someone like Madeon who actually performs it with a launchpad instead of the generic traktor gear.
Madeon may use a Launchpad, but his sets are still as predetermined as several other "top tier" DJs. He might have a few sections where he plays a few chords live, but those are exactly the same every set. There are a lot of DJ's who do mix on the spot though, IMO the best example is DJ EZ
um that guy is literally pressing one key to the beat of the track?
He's manually triggering the clap sound on the analogue drum machine.
I do most of my music live using a variety of equipment, (2 Kaossilators, Ableton Push, APC 40, a micro Korg. Really no time to relax unless you're letting a clip go repeat for a few measures. There's a lot of pressure not to mess up A lot of the time I like ditching the Push altogether and just using hardware. It's a bit more rewarding and you don't need to use a laptop or anything.

fucking hell the vid got taken down
because you're criticizing the music and failing to recognize his impressive technical skill. I dont care if you like the music or not, but you can't deny that he's skilled.
Oh they definitely will, people on Facepunch have the same level of understand of the entire concept of opinions as a 5 year old (ergo they are self-centered, if they don't like something then it is, to them, objectively bad in every way ever). What's sad is that they don't realize how stupid they're being because they honest to god believe that their opinion is "correct" despite the fact that no such thing could ever be claimed. I wonder if they ever wonder why they don't typically see adults acting like that.

What a lot of you are forgetting is that these guys are producers first and foremost. Those premade DJ sets are just a showcase of their music pretty much. They aren't professional DJs so you shouldn't expect crazy turntablism or improvised sets. But there are exceptions of course. I'm not a fan of these dudes though, saw Laidback Luke a while ago, nearly fell asleep during his set. But people shouldn't bash them for not being that awesome at DJing. [editline]12th April 2014[/editline] And for those thinking that DJing or turntablism isn't a skill, check these guys out:
