counterargument
I wasn't justifying its flaws at all; it's clear it has plenty, and I absolutely would have preferred if they made characters you gave two shits about, a more in-depth story, and actual difficulty. I was mostly hitting on how you attacked the game like it was some kind of complete mess, saying it "totally fell apart," which simply isn't true. Skyrim captured a really neat balance that allows for RPG novices and experts (albeit with mods) alike to enjoy, and really is a game of massive scale and detail. I don't see how thousands of people enjoying something a day only makes it "good enough." Call of Duty or Candy Crush might not be the highest quality gaming experiences out there, but their popularity is definitely an indicator that it was a very enjoyable experience for many despite flaws. The sacrifices games make to become very successful and truly mainstream are indeed saddening, like a band losing its unique sound. But to bash Skyrim like it's barely fun/at the level of pandering that those examples are is kind of ridiculous to me, seeing as it's your most played Steam game. Personally, I haven't played with major game-changing mods. Vanilla Skyrim is still a solid, fun game to me. It doesn't touch too deeply upon each of its elements in order to remain relatively simple and approachable. Is that a good thing? Absolutely not. Despite this, it retains a number of enjoyable mechanics, and is just a fun time all around for many.
I just hope they learned their lesson as to why New Vegas was really popular. Most of the time if a sequel comes out and it's the same engine with 50% of the same assets and it's still full price people throw a shitstorm and riot in the streets, yet the opposite happened with New Vegas. The worst people have to say about it is "Meh, I liked the other atmosphere better." Keep the amazing companions. Keep the optional hardcore mode. Keep the every-NPC-killable approach to quests. (For god's sake please) Keep the actual moral decisions.

I really hope they get their hands on Fallout 4.
Apparently being the most played strictly single player game on steam to this day makes it a bad game. Honestly, I used to nitpick Skyrim for all the things it COULD'VE been, but at the end of the day it's really fun.
Popularity does not a good game make. Skyrim is extremely flawed. I play it occassionally, but pretty much just because of the huge mod scene. There's not really a lot else going for it, in my opinion.
Frankly I just hope the writing is good and that the new speech system will allow for a nice way to go about that. Having a maximum of 4 speech options seems limiting, but we'll see how that goes.
I think hitmarkers are fine (through sound or visuals or both) It's nice to know when you hit something or not.
Or they could make a stagger animation whenever you land a hit, or some particle effects, or combine both? Hit markers are the laziest way of implementing that sort of feedback, I really hope we get an option to turn it off entirely.
As much as Im hyped for this game, Im not sure I like the minimalistic UI.
Having a maximum of 4 speech options seems limiting.
Have you played Mass Effect? There are countless conversations in which you have more than 6 options despite having 6 spots on the wheel. You can just hit "investigate" for more options.
Last I checked the only food you could pick up in Fallout was food that had been recently made, canned, or dried/powered.
I still don't see how having a speech wheel makes it any worse I've been playing FNV all week and just because you have a dickload of speech options sometimes doesn't mean you get a different response for each one, most of the time there is multiple things for you to say that trigger the exact same response from the NPC
Popularity doesn't mean its good. Fucking CoD is the same rehashed shit with broken mechanics but its heavily played as well.
It works, it's fun, it's easy to play. CoD isn't bad, if it was then ppl wouldn't play it for years and years.
As much as Im hyped for this game, Im not sure I like the minimalistic UI.
It looks like it's just a filler UI for the time being.
