dude creates umbrella that reminds you when you forgot about it, and cost 89 bucks

"So you'll never forget it on the bus" Nah mate, you leave that overpriced shit on the bus you'll never find that shit regardless of there being a chip or not, you'll just be reminded through your phone that you've forgotten 89 dollars instead of 20
Don't see why this is funny.
Smart homes are the future and how can my waifu tell me I forgot my umbrella if she doesn't know what it is?
you might wanna invest in some grip exercises :v:
I exercise my grip plenty each day :v:
Other than "why", my only questions are how far away must you be from the umbrella to receive the alert, and how instantaneous is the alert?
For example, you're sitting at the front of the bus with the umbrella, but you get off at your stop without grabbing it- when you're getting off, you'll be relatively close to it until the bus drives away.
If the distance you can be from it is too short and the alert is instant it could become an annoyance, but if the distance is too far, it'll be useless on public transportation when it gets crowded.
It doesn't seem like much of a solution, but just another inconvenience that will lose you $90.
Well, BLE allows up to 100m.
Maybe it's just an American thing, but I've learned that on public transport one should never let go of their belongings.
I live in a pretty small town, it's a really different mentality here
I hate umbrellas. Fuck them.
love the material but tracker tags aren't exactly a new innovation.
[t]http://a.pomf.cat/ljhyjc.png[/t]
You're probably even less likely to never need its tracker functionality because you spent some 100 bucks on the bugger after tax and shipping and you're not going to just set it aside in public
No it isn't? Most umbrellas don't even way a single kg and holding onto it isn't a hassle for nearly any person who isn't physically ill. If that is tiresome how do you carry groceries into the house?
Everyone is different. People just forget sometimes.

you still would look like less of an idiot using it then bragging to people you spent 90$ on an umbrella that "Tells you when you forgot it"
just put a non-stupid umbrella that isn't a gay katana/saber design in it and you're ok
I can't remember the last time I saw someone use an umbrella
Hell, I could design something leagues cheaper easily within $35 (Still on the cheap end of umbrellas) and it be leagues better without yet another proprietary app.

that's a pretty common markup honestly for most products. and creating it by yourself would probably require at least a couple years experience with major hardware. i for instance would have no idea how to put that shit together, even though i've been around electronics all my life, because i'm a software guy. and this is a product for the average consumer who can barely operate a smartphone at it's fullest capacity, so imagine how they feel if they're given a couple pcb boards and are told "now put it together and you'll save $60!" that's why some people are willing to pay a 3x markup on a product because someone is willing to do it for them. this would be an interesting thing for me personally because I'm very forgetful of my umbrellas, and that shit looks neato.
sure someone could etsy this shit and sell it for like $50 but at the end of the day, they're a company and they have to not only make their dues on how much time they've spent in developing and marketing, but the fact that there's tons of people down the line that all need to be paid by it too. they are also (hopefully) creating a product that works well, has proper build quality, and has no issues regarding the build or the software behind it. at the end of the day, they have to pay for everything including the roof over their head. there's a big difference when someone hacks together something in his bedroom vs something that needs to be mass produced and properly sold on a real market.

The difference is, wearing an umbrella on your back is always going to look silly, not to mention that you're kind of buggered if you want to wear a rucksack as well; whereas it's not mandatory to 'brag' about purchasing this.
Although the price may seem steep for an umbrella, it might end up saving you money in the long run if you frequently lose yours. I'm reminded of a Discworld quote about boots:
The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.
Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.
But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.
This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.
That's a fair argument however I'm willing to be that a significant portion of the money went into marketing or the design of the product rather than the hardware.
I can crank out quality boards that rival them if I go through a pick and place service as it'd only add another ~$5 cost per unit (If I built ~90 units). Of course here they're probably charging an arm and a leg due to not just marketing/design but because of limited run.
If they really scaled up the production, they'd probably get the same or slightly cheaper cost per unit that I'm quoting right here.
give it a sim card slot so you can call it and have a contact in your phone called 'umbrella'

except... you won't lose any umbrellas if you wear them on your back/bag
The first thing I'm going to think if I see one of these is "This idiot payed 90$ for an umbrella"
