Guardsmen would work. Do a mix of what they do for the Overlord games (If i'm not mistaken, they're similar to the Pikmin games) and the squad system for Republic commando.
The Imperial Guard could quite easily work without any sort of squad mechanic or something similar. There is no 'standard' Imperial Guard as such and each is different so they can do whatever they like with them to make things fair. They could use a regiment where every guardsman has things like Carapace armour and Hellguns.
They hired a guy that only works on the ai for Nids. They said he's been watching a lot of Starship Troopers and Insect Documentaries in order to get it right.
I'd like to know more
even if their infantry is literal cannon fodder i kind of want the IG in the game but only for their tanks the IG tanks THE tanks someone mentioned a Baneblade on the previous page; i raise you the Stormhammer, not seen since Epic 40,000 in the 90's: imagine that - with a player controlling each turret and mannable position - as the ultimate IG super unit in the game but the Baneblade would be juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust fine too i wonder if they have Daemonic summoning planned for the Sorcerers of the Chaos faction? throwing a squad of Bloodletters at the enemy would be coolio. and the Eldar have the Avatar, anyone think they'll implement that in some way?
What if IG was literally tanks. Just tanks. No infantry, no faces, just tanks.
IG could totally work but you would have to play as at least Kasrkin or storm troopers/Tempestus Scions
if there's no items you can get for imperial guard to look like steel legion or death korps or valhallans i am going to be very dissapoint. steel legion represent dem orkz aint shit
since the other armies have their Warbands, Chapters, Klanz and Craftworlds, i'm pretty sure IG would get stuff like that as separate sub-factions

They are [sp]were[/sp] a Guard regiment who completely wore carapace armor.
Ig would work even if you started out as a generic cadian guardsmen and then became equivelent to a stormtrooper or sergeant as you leveled up, even if you weren't in control of a large squad as long as you had lots of competent friendly ai in battles (what you should have anyway considering IG's tactics is manpower over everything.) and the ability to have npc or player maned basilisk artillery would be a big boost to IG's competency. also if hellguns are accurate IG would be amazing because 1 hellgun shot can punch a hole in a space marine in the lore. like people don't realise even in the lore guardsmen survive from time to time, how do you think kasrkins are made? they are the one dude that saw his hole regiment get eaten by horrible plague infested fat people and survived. also if they make the generic lasgun not a piece of shit, I think it's excusable if they make it a bit more powerful than it is in the lore purely for balance sake.
everything about 40k is amazing except the tabletop game. The models, games, and lore is some of the neatest shit around but the tt-game is so fucking needlessly complicated.

They're only called flash lights because there's so many better guns in 40k that a standard laser rifle is a bit shit in comparison.
man i hope an Eversor shows up at some point. they never get any press in the games for how crazy sick they are
since the other armies have their Warbands, Chapters, Klanz and Craftworlds, i'm pretty sure IG would get stuff like that as separate sub-factions
I really hope they include the Death Korps of Krieg as a subfaction for the Imperial Guard. DKOK needs more love in the video game side of things, because so far the only WH40k game I've played that's included them is Retribution's DKOK DLC
Regarding the IG as faction, I personally see that as both pretty cool idea but also having quite some drawback: If 1 guardsman/player doesn't take notable portion of potential Ork playerbase amount, then 1 sergeant guardsman with NPC guardsman squad/player takes one hell of a slice of max amount of Tyranids there can be at once.
It'd actually be cool to have controls similar to Brothers in Arms with your squad being separated out into separate sections and having to use flanking maneuvers.
Perhaps instead of squads, each player was in control of a fire team?
I'm not in to Warhammer, but why do people praise the Imperial Guard so much? Like, what do they do? From what I've read they're kinda like WWII-era soviets or something? Throw dudes at something until it's dead or something like that.

They don't have muscles the size of logs and they don't have near impenetrable armor. And they still get the job done. They're great because in a universe so gritty you could replace all the cover art with sand and gravel there is actually a faction you can relate to. They aren't the best but they are the most badass because of necessity.

They're poorly supplied, largely poorly trained and they're against Demons from hell, Terminators, Space Monks, Genetically engineered space marines and steroid-ridden Greenskins who use axe-blades the size of car wheels. They mostly die horribly but there're a few regiments who are mostly homages to specific methods of warfare or pop culture references. There's a whole regiment of Predator Arnold Schwarzeneggers, Mongolians on Horseback and WW1 Trench sloggers. They also have lots of tanks, lots of them. They're a pretty cool faction that have a bit too much love because they're the underdog if there had to be one.

I wonder how they would handle the Tau exactly. Really shitty melee abilities but can pick just about anyone off from extreme distance?

Like the Vostroyan Firstborn (space cossacks), Death Korp of Krieg (inspired by WWI French and German forces) or the Catachan Jungle Fighters (pretty much an army composed of Arnold Schwarzenegger from Predator). The list goes on, there's so many different regiments and they're all different in their own ways. Plus their vehicles. GOOD GOD their vehicles. All of them are badass. Everyone points to the Baneblade of course, but my personal favorite is the Basilisk artillery tank. Gotta love the Leman Russ too. And the big name guardsmen are the greatest. Commissar Yarrick for instance. He took down this feared ork Warboss- but lost his arm in the fight. So he grafted the warboss' enormous robotic claw onto his arm. In time he grew a reputation among the Orkz and became pretty much the only human to be feared by them. And my personal favorite part? It got to the point were the Orkz made up stories that he was unkillable or thay he could kill an Ork just by looking at him. So when he lost his eye in battle, what did he do? Had the techpriests graft a motherfucking laser into his eye socket so he could make those stories come true.
Why I like the Imperial Guard: I played a Commissar in a game of Only War that killed a warboss with a spare tire. Too bad I will never be able to be him in this game.

It depends on what regiment it is but a lot of them are fairly well trained and equipped, although compared to the things they sometimes fight against it doesn't make much difference. Things like Lasguns and flak armour might seem fairly useless at times but they aren't low quality and are some of the best military equipment (for standard humans) the Imperium has. I think the Imperial guard could work alright 1v1 in Eternal Crusade against Eldar, Tyranids and Orks, it's just against Space Marines and Chaos Space Marines where there would be problems.

Most Regiments aren't made to be shipped off into big Crusades, they tend to be the pride of planets and Systems and are trained for war there. Some of them never fight and have fancy ceremonial armour that couldn't stop a slug and Lasguns that are always on maximal setting because "We've always done it that way".

You know there are infantry beyond Guardsmen. You could use Stormtroopers which actually had the lasguns that could eat through Space Marine armor.
The Hotshot Lasgun is powerful enough even to penetrate heavy armour like a Chaos Space Marine's Power Armour.
Can't wait to play as a commissar and BLAM half of my regiment.
