That's not my point. People just say the exact same thing every time a sequel comes out. "It's not a true sequel" or "it could be called anything and it'd be fine" are something that pops up nearly every single time a sequel's out. It means nothing anymore.
People complain about it often because it's a problem that's been popping up very often. There have been an absolutely ridiculous amount of sequels/reboots recently that really shouldn't have been sequels/reboots. This counts double for reboots, since they're essentially trying to replace the original, yet often have little to nothing to do with them. A lot of people have grown pretty fucking cynical about that sort of thing after shit like Syndicate, Thief and The Bureau (especially before it was renamed to The Bureau)
Prey was a really neat shooter, and I definitely really liked it for all the reasons you guys mentioned already. One thing I didn't see though was the story elements told through radio broadcasts. I loved that they actually took the effort and got Art Bell to record a fake Coast to Coast AM show. I thought that connection to earth was a really neat touch. Anyway it's clear this title will be something completely different, so although I don't know about calling it 'Prey' again, it may be very good in it's own right. We'll have to wait and see.
I have a feeling of "I expected something great, but got something else I think looks great instead". It feels weird, it's not the game I wanted to be announced but at the same time I'm not exactly disappointed with it either.
Exactly how I feel about this. Although I'm still hoping there would be something in it that resembles the original Prey.
And here is Ganerumo to blindly defend Bethesda.
lmao cool your jets you clown. Ganerumo hasn't posted anything incorrect by this point in the thread. Prey 2 was a fucking disaster in development, the showings were entirely bullshots and scripted cutscene tier "gameplay" videos because despite how long it was in development, they had nothing real to show that would have captivated nerds. Bethesda have an obligation to kill failing projects, letting a dead horse continue to be beaten in the hopes that "no, no we can fix it!!" is a surefire way to bankrupt the studio. I await more shit on this reboot, I always like psychological thriller stuff and this seems to have it by the bucket load.

Some people have indicated that the whole thing was just Bethesda trying to fuck over Human Head for not agreeing to be bought out. I'm not seeing any concrete evidence for either side.
I mean, were people really expecting this to be Prey 2? That entire project has been dead and buried for years now, why would they work with what was left from that, when it's probably much easier to start from scratch?

It's entirely likely that Bethesda were being huge dickholes in the whole matter too. Probable even given their history. But the project never seemed to make much traction, we never actually saw real unfiltered gameplay and news was pretty lacking from what I remember.
Shame we won't get Prey 2 but this trailer gave me good vibes. I was reminded of the first Dead Space/System Shock/Bioshock (well, all of these are or were inspired by System Shock).
the showings were entirely bullshots and scripted cutscene tier "gameplay" .
And this isn't?
Do you have any proof of this? Some people have indicated that the whole thing was just Bethesda trying to fuck over Human Head for not agreeing to be bought out. I'm not seeing any concrete evidence for either side.
Pete Hines said they looked at the game long and hard and decided it wasn't up to their quality standards and just canned it entirely. There have been rumors of Bethesda moving development over to Arkane Studios since 2013 (rumors that are now confirmed 100%), the same year an "anonymous source" (ie not a very credible source) gave a bunch of information about how the 2012 delay to an unspecified date was a scheme to force Human Head into selling to Bethesda, but there were never any actual sources backing that up other than another "person close to Bethesda", so just complete wind on that end. Bethesda's stance on the delays was always that the game development didn't progress and was not satisfactory enough to be worth a release. The existence of games like Doom 4, which was delayed multiple times and prompted a complete reshaping of the team by the publisher to an eventual successful release of a good game, goes against the idea that Bethesda as a publisher would do something as idiotic as pour funds into a game specifically to stall it long enough to buy the studio, especially since when as shown by the transfer over to Arkane, this buyout would have been ultimately completely avoidable and unnecessary. It's his word/their word, yes, but his word is an official publishing company and their PR president with a consistent story and a credible handling of the situation, and their word is a completely anonymous source only cited by IGN with literally nothing to back it up, no names or proof of anything being true, and the story actively clashing with Bethesda's usual take on salvaging fucked titles. [editline]13th June 2016[/editline]
And this isn't?
It's a CGI cutscene designed to hype the audience. Prey 2 masqueraded as an actual playable product which was later proven to just be air. It's also done by a dev team with a much better track record.
And this isn't?
This is an announcement. It's not trying to pretend it's gameplay. Prey 2 had footage pretending it was gameplay. Biggo differenco.

A bunch of story type stuff and then some fake gameplay.

It's not a CGI gameplay mockup like Rainbow Six Patriots. This is what they presented as playable gameplay.
It's probably faked straight to hell like the first halo 2 trailer though.

as a game by itself- it looks interesting and got me interested. That being said, I know nothing about the Prey franchise.
I never played Prey or knew anything about it, so i'm immune to everyone bitching about "it's not what they teased earlier" I loved System Shock 1 and 2, so more games like it are totally cool with this.

I definitely would've preferred to see Prey 2 finished (because it ties in with the great story of the first game) rather than a reboot by a developer that hasn't made a game in recent memory that could keep me interested. I could never get into Dishonored, because something about its gameplay and presentation just felt off to me. Still, the concept seems interesting, and Chris Avellone is writing for it, so I'm interested.
