What baffles me the most is how people even thought this was a good idea.
Why the fuck did anyone WANT an android you plug into your tv for gaming? You could just connect a controller to your phone via bluetooth and bam! Portable OUYA. If you wanted to plug your smartphone into your TV, you could do it with microhdmi which is exactly what I did with my previous smartphone that actually had a microHDMI port.
Did everyone really just invest in this because they wanted to emulate old games and play them on their TVs?
Actually, I might have supported it in the past for that very reason

Can't you get android sticks that plug into your TV and do everything a phone does shy of making calls? Surely one of them would do everything the OUYA did, would be smaller, and would have full access to the Play Store.

Did those exist at the time? I don't remember those things being around at the time, and some quick research found only the Nexus Q, which I don't think could be used that way.
I think a lot of the hate for Ouya comes from 20/20 hindsight, or at least from problems that only became apparent when the actual product came out, not during the Kickstarter. I remember at the time, I was cautious simply because it was a new console, and lacked any killer-app game or even any major studios (Square shitting their backlog onto it doesn't count... they do that for everything. Remember the Wonderswan?). It was obvious to me that it was not a guaranteed success, but that's different from being a guaranteed failure.

A few of them were announced around the time the OUYA was having its kickstarter campaign.
I bought a chromecast december 2013 and I think the OUYA was out by then.
I don't know if it has bluetooth capability but if it does, you can probably connect a bluetooth controller to it and mess around with the OS to get it to play games. The problem with that though is that chromecast gets very hot when just streaming video and being connected to a hot TV and if it had to process anything, it might overheat.

I don't believe the OG Chromecast has any Bluetooth at all. Only inputs are USB and Wifi. The OG Chromecast (not sure about the newer revision) is not all that powerful either (fairly low end SoC and 512 MB of RAM). Its purely intended for Chromecast activities, and that's pretty much it. OUYA was no power house by any means, but the Chromecast was not even in the same league.
There were a few homebrew exploits but they have been more proof of concept then anything.
Not knocking the Chromecast though, because it fulfills its purpose. While the OUYA...didn't.

Uh- Colonial Marines?
At least OUYA had some form of promise and it technically was what it was, at launch.
Sorry, i just can't think of a bigger failure than CM.
[sp] I preordered Colonial Marines, yes. I was suckered in by the E3 Trailer. Fuck my life. [/sp]

The best thing that came out of the Ouya was Rocco pissing on it.
It might of worked if android/mobile gaming was anything halfway decent to begin with. I could pretty much just get a pi at half the price and do more with it otherwise for big screen TV entertainment.

There are good android games, its just people already have phones to play them on.
Ashens reviewed it at the time of release, not even a minute in it becomes a disaster.

You know what as well, I'm pretty sure you could get more entertainment from an old Core2Duo machine than you could of got with an Ouya at its peak.
I had a lot of fun playing on my friend's ouya.
I played a shitload of towerfall, duck game, and I played one of the best platformers ever, Potatoman Seeks the Troof
I dunno why everyone thinks it's shit, they said they'd create a low end platform for simple indie titles with a low price ticket, and they delivered exactly that.
The only problem I have with the ouya is the controller is shit. Like utter shit. Other than that, I've had plenty of fun with the ouya.
I still don't understand the OUYA situation.
Like, it's pretty much exactly what they were saying they'd make, yet somehow everyone that backed it says they got blindsided by it?
Everything in the original Kickstarter was a CG mockup. The actual execution of everything was half-assed to an extent rarely seen even back in the era of third-party SNES controllers.
Their gamepad for example, hyped up as a "Stradivarius of Controllers", was a pile of plastic and glue that had deadzones that looked like this:

compared to a Dual Shock 3 running on the same Ouya unit:

This was literally just a $20 chinese android dongle, the only thing it had was the features i.e. "try it before you buy it" which went away.
I still don't get why so many jumped on the "omgawd it's a $100 console!!" thing
Every time people discuss the Ouya I post the Ouya tan picture so here it is.

Funny that my friend's laptop plugged into his TV serves the same function as an Ouya: a mobile Duck Game, Towerfall and other low requirements local multiplayer playing device.
My brother actually helped fund their kickstarter and received an Ouya. I remember when he first got it and was really excited for the possibilities, then he actually turned it on and there was nothing to play. He said "oh well you know it's still early so the games will come eventually". He used it for about a week or so and never touched it again.
TBH I probably would of gotten one if it had Google Play on it.

Funny how the concept is fine and the Shied proves it. It's niche, yes, but it has it's fanbase.
They just fucked up.
-snop-
Amazing frog had to have been the best thing to come out of the Ouya.
I was curious enough to see what these are currently going for on ebay.com. They're fucking averaging $85 USD each right now. What the fuck? :why:

Are those actually being bought? I saw a bunch for sale at $80, but no bids. The ones I saw with bids were around $20-30.

There's a lot more in the Completed Listings criteria that are a little below that average but still ridiculously high ($50-$80). There's probably more but I'm listing results with lowest selling price first.

Don't forget TowerFall, which was an OUYA exclusive (but luckily released for other things afterwards)

Super fun couch co-op game with great music

It's for Steam too just FYI.
But yea it's a good console game, so go ahead.
I felt like it could've done alright if they had marketed it as a Chromecast competitor first and a gaming machine second. Like, it did all your streaming stuff and multimedia tasks, but it also did games. That might've been an alright thing to have.
