Holy shit I hope he is fine
i'm more concerned about mass media and corporate smear campaigns against feminism, not some random youtube video.
If there would be just one random youtube video like this I would agree. There are thousands. One is irrelevant. Thousands are a problem. Now again, I'm not asking you to go and look for them, but if already stumbled upon it, like you are in this thread, I see nothing wrong with saying that this has nothing to do with feminism and that OP is just making a poor attempt at making feminism look bad.
if a person looks at this video and thinks "those god damned feminists!" then they very likely already have their mind made up and trying to convince them of anything is wasted energy.

nah maybe in a video actually discussing feminism like the "tropes vs. women" video threads. in these threads the only people who will look at this and think it represents feminism in any way are the type of people i don't argue with simply because it's pointless.
But I'm not talking about those people who are already confident about feminism. That's the point. Don't try to convince OP, it's a waste of time. Don't let him manipulate those that don't have a confident stance about feminism yet. And before you go on some hyperbole that "if this one video is capable of changing someone's mind about feminism he's an idiot anyway", it's not just one video. I'm not focusing on this one video. There's a big trend of making feminism look bad everywhere. Not only by the media but also on individual level. If people are being told from every direction that feminism is a movement for ugly manhating dykes, and nobody tells them that it's not, they might actually believe it if it isn't important enough for them to their own research. I'm talking about opposing that trend, not just some one random youtube video that exists in a vacuum.
What are the goals of feminism, and how does it achieve these goals?
What are the goals of feminism
"Feminism is a collection of movements and ideologies aimed at defining, establishing, and defending equal political, economic, and social rights for women." its like the first line on wikipedia [editline]9th August 2013[/editline] along with pretty much everything else you'd want to know
"Feminism is a collection of movements and ideologies aimed at defining, establishing, and defending equal political, economic, and social rights for women." its like the first line on wikipedia [editline]9th August 2013[/editline] along with pretty much everything else you'd want to know
As I see it, wouldn't it be pretty advantaged to have a positive impression on the majority of society? To change society, you need the support of the society, otherwise people are just gonna have prejudices against feminists. So shouldn't be one of the subgoals to actively fight against fake feminists?
fake feminist?? some woman shoving a guy off a podium has sod all to do with feminism and she may well be a feminist, and she may well not be. the only people who are taking this stuff in are leering MRA idiots who could never be convinced feminism is a positive thing anyway
Then at least say that it doesn't have anything to do with feminism and denounce it, because if you don't it gives MRA fuel for their arguments to bring more people on their side.
So shouldn't be one of the subgoals to actively fight against fake feminists?
There's strictly nothing in this video that has to do with feminism and there's nothing either from that person (or the crowd) that relates to feminism at all. There's only people labeling this stuff as "feminist" to reinforce their already-existing biases — it's not a "fake feminism" problem [editline]9th August 2013[/editline]
Then at least say that it doesn't have anything to do with feminism and denounce it
I believe that's what's been happening in this very thread.
I find it funny how if a woman hits a man it's to defend herself, however if a man hits a woman then it's an assault. Wish I was born in the future so I wouldn't have to experience all this shit.
Tell me guys, do you denounce every blatantly racist, misogynist, or obnoxious militant Atheist person who posts on this forum? No? Does that give me the right to generalize you with those people? After all, you aren't actively denouncing them. And that's on the scale of one little forum, not an entire fucking movement.

That's why I put "militant" because some people here border on it You understand my main point so just cut it at that and don't derail.
why did they applaud her?
Americans..
That's why I put "militant" because some people here border on it You understand my main point so just cut it at that and don't derail.
I mean, do you know someone here on facepunch who is a militant atheist and racist and misogynist? Give me some examples, because I have never encountered one. And that is why I ask for the similarities between racism, misogyny and atheism. How do you know that the guy who uttered something racist is an atheist? Nobody who is racist or hating women is always adding "hey and btw i am an atheist".
I mean, do you know someone here on facepunch who is a militant atheist and racist and misogynist? Give me some examples, because I have never encountered one.
That partially goes to my point. I've seen posts, don't remember usernames / context. You've never seen it so you can't denounce it. So I make that accusation based on stray examples I can barely remember, and you've never seen it so you aren't spending time denouncing it. How is that fair? [editline]9th August 2013[/editline]
And that is why I ask for the similarities between racism, misogyny and atheism. How do you know that the guy who uttered something racist is an atheist?
they were three separate categories, not intended to be all the same person. And again, not just Atheist that's all well and good.

That is the fallacy of your analogy.
Even if someone utters something racist, how should I know that he is an atheist if he never said that? That is the fallacy of your analogy.
once again I never said all of the above, and once again that seriously has no bearing on my point
lol feminism isn't an organization. feminism isn't a community. feminism is just a term for anyone who believes in gender equality. it isn't like each self-professed feminist has a list of every other feminist in the world and attends meetings where they vet new feminists.
feminism nowadays is nothing more than bitchy entitled women who think they have more rights than men
feminism nowadays is nothing more than bitchy entitled women who think they have more rights than men
This is your brain on stupid
that's entirely dependent on circumstances and a stupid generalisation [editline]9th August 2013[/editline] hahaha you are missing the point so badly its hilarious
What point is there to miss?
Tell me guys, do you denounce every blatantly racist, misogynist, or obnoxious militant Atheist person who posts on this forum?
He says that atheists should denounce every blatantly racist or blatantly misogynist atheist on facepunch. Have you ever seen someone writing a racist post while also telling people that he is an atheist? Why should people denounce someone of being an atheist when the people don't know it? There is also no real hypocrisy with someone who is an atheist and a racist. Atheism is about religion, racism is about race.
feminism nowadays is nothing more than bitchy entitled women who think they have more rights than men
why would they campaign for more rights if they thought they already have more rights? [editline]9th August 2013[/editline] actually why am i arguing with you? fucking lol [editline]9th August 2013[/editline]
What point is there to miss?
why would they campaign for more rights if they thought they already have more rights? They even get banned! Same with mysoginists. These things are frowned upon. He made it sound like he meant atheists which are racist or mysoginists. And looking around the threads about the amazing atheists I can see that he is clearly not the most loved person ever on facepunch.
there's no hypocrisy with a feminist shoving someone off a podium? it's bad, but it has nothing to with rights for women
There is a hypocrisy when this person is called a feminist, and uses her sex as a weapon and hurts someone solely based on their sex. Feminism wants to get rid of gender roles, when that person plays with the role of being the victim of sexual assault.
But people do denounce racists all the time on the forums? They even get banned! Same with mysoginists.
There is a hypocrisy when this person is called a feminist, and uses her sex as a weapon and hurts someone solely based on their sex. If there was some other movement that I support, and then either someone claiming to be a member of it would do things that contradict the movement ideals or someone would try to link said movement with things that contradict the movement ideals, and I would happen to stumble upon it, I would say that this and that has nothing to do with said movement.
I believe that's what's been happening in this very thread.
What? When I and some other guy said that other feminists should say that it doesn't have anything to do with feminism and denounce it we were rated dumb, told how stupid we are to demand something like that. that they don't care and that it's a waste of time.
it's been said many times in this thread that it has nothing to do with feminism, but it really didnt need to be
