Can't tell if sarcasm (Poe's law) but a non-trans person can and should be able to act in a trans role. It's called acting for a reason. Many films meant to raise awareness on a certain subject have actors portraying a role and do a very good job of it e.g. Edward Norton playing a neo-Nazi in American History X. As long as its written to be realistic and based off real trans people experiences and life (unlike blackface which is a caricature) then it's no problem if the actor portraying the character isn't trans.

A lot of transgender people would have difficulty acting it out, and then being known by millions. Probably was just easier to get an actor.

The difference here is that the trans character in the video wasn't portrayed in a disrespectful way at all
Also, the character is supposed to be a non-transitioned transgender woman, so she's supposed to look like a man, meaning the character can be played by a man. It literally makes no difference if it's an actual transgender person or not, because it's acting.
I find, personally, so long as you aren't creating a caricature/offensive image of someone, it doesn't matter what creed/sexuality/gender/race you are if you play a character.
Transsexuals got the right to express themselves, but that soleedus guy didn't have the right to express himself?
The transsexuals were offended by guys like him as much as guys like him got offended by transsexuals.
Ok, box inbound
There's a bit of a difference between someone getting offended over what can basically be seen as "Eeww, cooties!11", and a person getting offended because the previously mentioned someone said that he/she wished death upon them, don't you think?

Plenty of people wish death upon others in this forum
Glad this is getting a lot of exposure

I kinda like how they didn't do too much to feminize Andrew Garfield, just what most non full-time trans girls can get away with. For example, his eyebrows are left untouched. Many transwomen have to leave those masculine in order to not raise suspicion at work and such.
Wait if you want to be a women why only go part way with it? What's the point in even trying if you're just going to half ass it? Just go the full way of looking like a women and who cares if people at work judge or whatever.
thank you courageous artist for making this music video you have inspired and helped all of those without hope that are in a similar situation, truly music videos are our saviors
I legitimately think it was a dick move to post a pm in this thread.
They're called private messages for a reason. Regardless of the content, even if it were pro trans.
4 weeks late but this thread was bumped so i guess i'm going to reply
soleddudeuduesudus's post was basically harassment. just because it was sent in a private message doesn't mean it's not gross behavior.
if he REALLY wanted to say something like that, maybe he shouldn't have sent it on a forum where he could be banned for that kind of thing.

if you ignore the monetary costs behind transitioning (which is almost impossible to do becaeuse shit's fucking expensive), the effort put into it is ultimately up to the person.
some transpeople are alright with just dressing differently or changing up their hairstyle, while some utterly and completely hate their body and need to transition fully with surgery and shit.
I'm glad this was bumped because I had no idea Reichmarshal Dumbass was banned

Even still, it's a private message, and the guy wanted an explanation. A permaban was a bit much. Though he doesn't really care about the forum anyways so it doesn't matter.

if it was literally any other user i'd defend him, tbh.

Facepunch isn't a democracy
Unless you have massive popular support and the will of god (Garry), if you have a problem with it the only solution is to turn off your monitor and go outside

Arcade Fire: "We are using this to represent the serious issues of society. We feel it gets the point across."
This guy: "PFFT, aren't them negros silly? Isn't this just hilarious? LOOK AT ME, MAMMY!"
One's trying to be serious, the other is made for comedy.
Thanks for wasting my time on your Poe's Law bullshit.
oh god it's this thread again

I wouldn't consider being trans to be a thing only trans people can portray. It's not like race, where it's pretty much impossible to act and look like a member of another race without being racist. Being transgender is a psychological thing (yes, it involves physical change, but only as a way of resolving dysphoria rather than the various things which can lead somebody to be transgender. In addition, getting an out-but-still-transitioning transwoman to take part in this would likely be difficult, due to the discrimination she might and would face after that. I'm not really sure where to categorise being transgender other than 'gender identity', but to me a cisgender person playing the role of a transgender person isn't offensive. However, that is just my opinion.
arcade fire is my favorite band and this whole thread was very disappointing
[editline]22nd June 2014[/editline]
i wrote a huge rant on this already but basically, everyone complaining about this is absolutely ridiculous. it's honestly a wonderful video and an amazing song. the char is not fully trans, in fact garfield had a trans COACH who herself stated this, and probably backed the idea as a whole so???

I disliked it because the music's not my thing primarily. I can deal with a message I disagree with if the beat pumps me up.

so wait, you're saying you disagree with the message "don't be assholes to transgender people"?

It's a pretty invasive surgery and could lead to permanent physical harm and a slight possibility of death like any other surgery. Some people may be content dressing like the opposite gender.
