So, an omnidirectional treadmill + Oculus Rift + Kinect + Hydra = Holy shit this VR too good, future of gaming? Cool as shit.

can't he walk backwards?
One of the videos shows the guy strafing, and it looks fairly clunky.
Fast paced FPS games aren't the most fitting to play on these, I think. Something like yet to be developed first-person VRMMOs, or RPGs, or exploration games would be much better.
damn i have so much ideas with that Oculus thing but not enough money to afford it :(
Running around Chernarus with this in ArmA (or playing any other first-person game with big maps, STALKER comes to mind) would be absolutely amazing. Cool as shit.
That sounds pretty fucking expensive though. Like, $1000 or so? (600 for the treadmill+300 for the oculus +400 for the Kinect and Hydra) [editline]19th April 2013[/editline]
I think that GMod has the potential to be the ultimate Oculus Rift testbed. Imagine exploring the streets and skies of gm_bigcity in sandbox, or experimenting with new forms of social interaction with things like GMod Tower and the Cinema game mode.
source maps are tiny and ugly, even without the treadmill it doesn't sound like the best thing A proper sandbox game like Fallout or ArmA would be way better with this
THE FUTURE
It doesn't seem like he can really strafe from side to side on that thing.
Holy shit, just imagine playing Miasmata/any other survival games with this.
Now play the scout
I can only imagine an Omni, Hydra, Kinect, and Oculus Rift being used together. I would never want to leave.
Make a running course in GMod and only let people with this play. True gaming marathons.
Sure, but doesn't the omni treadmill have a max weight limit? And would that ring around the waist be retractable?
Weight limit around 110 kg. Most of FP covered. [editline]19th April 2013[/editline] Also, I will get this. I simply will.
Apparently if you jump on the platform, you jump in-game. Doesn't seem to be too much more complex than that.
Is the platform sturdy enough for that? It seems like bunny-hopping on it would break it pretty quickly.
im 18 stone i'm going to jump right fucking through it
Is the platform sturdy enough for that? It seems like bunny-hopping on it would break it pretty quickly.
I think the middle of the platform forms part of the main support. I bet it's pretty sturdy. It's looking like the waist ring tells the computer if you're leaning, but it could also be used to tell if you're sprinting as well. I wonder if the platform you're walking on is electronic in any way. It might just be purely motion tracked by another unit.
I'm gonna get this. Also can someone tell me what this "hydra" thing everyone's talking about? I seem to be missing some info. Oh and now all we need is a elements suit or something. You know, you are running in the desert? Well you get hot. Snow? Better dress warm!
Fast paced FPS games aren't the most fitting to play on these, I think.
I wanna see someone 'play' Quake 3 on this now that you're talking about it.
Virtual reality! When you get told about your mom being a whore online, you can almost feel your characters tears!
I can imagine what a proper Aliens game would be like with this. A man can dream.. A man can dream....
This + Portal =
I think this is pretty much exactly how people talking about it here want to use it like:
I just realized how amazing it would be to have VR gloves that actually just detect your hands and fingers positions with precision.
This would be amazing with open world RPG's. Imagine having that sense of actually having to decide to walk for a couple hours to find that dungeon. This mutha fucka just changed the game.

You can walk across it in like an hour or something.
I can only imagine an Omni, Hydra, Kinect, and Oculus Rift being used together. I would never want to leave.
the hydra is nice but it doesn't replace your hands, so there needs to be a VR glove that breaks though like Oculus. oh you mean this one yeah feedback is nice.
ArmA and Stalker are like the perfect games for this, if i had fuckton of money i would get this and play those games to achieve immersion beyond anything ever experienced before (and hopefully not get bored/tired of it and never use it again)
It's literally an omni-directional treadmill. His walking across it feeds a command to the player character to start moving, and the thing holding him in-place is to prevent him from walking/running out of the center of the treadmill. Apparently if you jump on the platform, you jump in-game. Doesn't seem to be too much more complex than that.
It's a low friction surface with low friction shoes that have plunger pins to prevent them from slipping on the curved surfaces. I suppose only the center portion is actually a treadmill?
the threadmill made me think of
