Well, technically, more people think Metroid is a guy in a suit than people think Link is called Zelda.
I always thought it was pretty cool that Samus was mistaken for a dude so often. The idea of a character that doesn't need to actively flag their gender and is only concerned with getting the goddamn job done is pretty cool, I think.
does samus really even need a character [editline]25th February 2014[/editline] you can still tell an interesting story with a personality-less player avatar. look at super metroid, half life, etc.
She's respecting her commanding officer or whatever he is, I don't see what's so out of place with it.
In our day and age, a woman unquestionably obeying a man's order and enjoying it is seen as misogyny.
also fusion's ending was more or less just super metroid's reheated
She's respecting her commanding officer or whatever he is, I don't see what's so out of place with it.
she doesn't have a commanding officer, she's a goddamn bounty hunter she does what she goddamn well pleases because she's the toughest, the fastest, and the most clever fighter in the galaxy. She doesn't need a commander, the commander needs her. So why she keeps getting put under the thumb of some micromanaging thick headed confederate sock puppet will always baffle me.
I didn't even know Samus had a love interest.
I didn't even know Samus had a love interest.
That's because she doesn't. [editline]25th February 2014[/editline] She's a strong, independent space woman who needs no man.
In our day and age, a woman unquestionably obeying a man's order and enjoying it is seen as misogyny.
When a female character who by every and any metric should be the most skilled smooth operating soldier within a hundred lightyears is continually and frequently hobbled in order to put her below big muscular manly men who should by every right be inferior to her in almost every situation and is more than once crippled by her out of control and previously unestablished childish womanly emotions, that's sexist when the protagonist of the story has all control of the plot taken away from them and given to a big manly gruff shitlord, that's horrible offensive bullshit
I heard that the original character of the Metroid series wanted Samus like she is in Other M in every other game, but no one would let him write her like that. It's kind of evident though because of, well, as previously mentioned, Metroid Fusion was the last game before Other M that he had any real control over in writing.
Yoshio Sakamoto has gone on record for saying that he's never really thought of Samus as a character until Other M. But you're right about Other M being a bit of a George Lucas and the Star Wars prequels situation.
I didn't even know Samus had a love interest.
Not canonically, no (unless you want to call whatever Adam and Samus have in Other M a romantic relationship), I assume this Ethan character in the video is just a self-insert character.
retro studios should make a new 2D metroid now that they have 2D experience with donkey kong

I was just over-glossing it.
retro studios should make a new 2D metroid now that they have 2D experience with donkey kong
The only thing that should be done with Metroid is tossing every copy of it under a steamroller. Samus was a disgusting example of a good female character from day one and any progressive qualities were made up by fanboys. Other M simply brought all the ugliness to the forefront.
retro studios should make a new 2D metroid now that they have 2D experience with donkey kong
Oh man... OH MAN. I really REALLY hope their next game is a 2D metroid. I mean, with the game scope these days, the game would be completely massive. Also, kind of cheaply hoping it's on 3DS, but I'm fairly sure Nintendo is going to force it on their WiiU to get some extra console sales.

In the Prime series she was a silent protagonist IIRC, and she went out to investigate these crazy anomalies all by herself, no backup from the Federation, and absolutely nobody to tell her when she's "authorised" to use different equipment. So I got the impression of her being strong and independent. I mean, nothing wrong with developing her character, or giving her some emotional baggage, but what they did in Other M just looked like a complete U-turn from previously.
I mean, nothing wrong with developing her character, or giving her some emotional baggage,
No. There is absolutely everything wrong with this. Emotions, especially ones that display attachment, are a show of weakness. And in this context is simply unacceptable.
It... looked okay. But the praises end there pretty damn hard. Eugh. Also, Fusion was awesome. I don't understand where the lovey dovey shit comes from. Adam is/was her boss. Her respected boss. Not her dad, not her brother, not her love interest, her boss. He signed her paychecks and told her where to shoot. She "liked" him because he was a good, respectful commander and she quit the feds and went independent when she couldn't deal with why he'd let his brother die. He dies, space magic lets him live on as an AI. Nobody knows this, hell, the AI didn't even know this, until the end of Fusion. Sucks we haven't gotten a Metroid game since Prime 3 or Pinball though. Really could use some more metroid.
retro studios should make a new 2D metroid now that they have 2D experience with donkey kong
I just want a metroidvania game that actually gets how the metroidvania structure works. A lot of the modern/indie metroidvania inspired games don't seem to understand that the world design of Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night encouraged you go back through areas to find new stuff inherently, just by making the areas large enough and putting your next objective naturally in that direction. Modern metroidvanias seem to think "oh no, that's backtracking we can't have that", but the only reason backtracking has come to be considered a negative is because usually it has no point, there's nothing new to gain from it. But Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night avoid this by designing all the areas to have things in them that you benefit from exploring from the start of the game to the finish. The only modern metroidvania games I can think of that have come closest to this kind of design is Guacamelee and (from what I've heard, I haven't actually played it) Shadow Complex. Dark Souls does it well as well, but because it's 3D and not a platformer a lot of people have trouble recognising it as a metroidvania (it totally is, though).
lol what. is this supposed to be some epic parody of tumblr feminists or something
Oh sweet Jesus, you don't even know the quarter of it.
No. There is absolutely everything wrong with this.
A story about how Samus became the ultimate badass could have been cool. Show why she chose to ditch the military and go rogue, how she broke away from the federation and became the semi outcast that she is. Maybe something with the Chozo or whatever, a story about becoming a self sufficient space Yojimbo y'know? You could do a whole thing about finding out what's important to you and securing your own identity. You could even keep Adam as her last connection to a system she's given up on, make him more of a kindred spirit than a surrogate daddy. Do something with intrigue and betrayal or whatever, Samus overcomes adversity, realizes there's a whole galaxy that needs rescuing, goes off to fuck shit up and save whole planets single handed like a boss. Segue into Prime. but no we should make a story about how she wants to be dominated by the world's most incompetent squad commander with the world's silliest hat any objections lady
Okay so I open the video and I'm greeted with this I'm honestly reminded of those really weird, uncanny valley-looking 3d models they use in porn.

If anything it's a stupid plot point, but don't act like everything in the world is sexism just because that's all you think about.
I didn't mind the thought of Samus wanting love, but she shouldn't be bending over for it.

Oh wow, wait, this isn't satire?
lets not forget in other M the fact that you go through almost all of the lava area without permission to use the varia suit. but then captain dick for brains allows her near the end.
