i genuinly thought that game got canceled, i only found out about it a year ago after remembering that it had been anounced. EA sure likes to hemorrhage money [editline]20th February 2016[/editline]
Spore goes from mediocre to downright fucking terrible once you get to space stage. It's a mess with no real complexity where you awkwardly stumble around and can't truly explore to your convenience because your empire is made of dumb incapable manchildren who can't do shit on their own. [editline]19th February 2016[/editline] Apparently Maxis was divided by internal conflicts with a part of the team wanting more kid friendly, easy to access gameplay while the other (lead by Wright) wanted to make the game a "hardcore" experience with a lot more complexity, with a lot more scientific components like actually having to manage your creature's physiology past some arbitrary stat points (stuff like putting lungs in your creature so it could leave the sea, and whatnot). Eventually neither side won and the game turned into a mediocre mess that didn't really know what the fuck to do with its own mechanics.
ya i can see that, the creature phase, the tribal phase, and the city phase all are radically different in terms of gameplay, with subtle nuances in the tribal and city phases, but completely lacking any skill for the creature phase. the tribal warfare part is pretty great because it really determines your creature's philosophy, as is the city building phase because of how many ways you can achieve victory
In Spore's/Darkspore's case seeing as they have similar circumstances of always-online, it was basically a DRM method to prevent people from pirating the game. It's not about the longevity of the title, it's about getting as much profit as possible before the inevitable piracy. Problem is, Spore's DRM system was so maligned by the internet that at launch it became the most pirated game ever, partially because of the game's misplaced hype and partially out of sheer spite for Electronic Arts. I guess Darkspore was so unremarkable and completely average that the pirates either were silent and subtle about it, or no one even remotely gave a damn and the game came and went like an insignificant wave on your ankles.
Spore isn't always-online. The spore servers have been down for months last I checked and you can still play it just fine, just without every other player's 300-foot-tall dick monsters invading your world.

But it did still have a really obnoxious DRM system. Darkspore probably focused on always-online for the sake of DRM since it doesn't exactly seem like a multiplayer-centric game in any way, ironically a whole year before Diablo 3 launched with always-online to a severe backlash.

It actually had a pretty cool system in multiplayer kept players together buy adding an enemy that could lock down a single player until interrupted.
That soundtrack sounds great. Reminds me of Blade Runner's soundtrack.
That soundtrack sounds great. Reminds me of Blade Runner's soundtrack.
The music and enviroments gave me Metroid Prime vibes.
I enjoyed playing this game with a friend back in 2011, still have it on Steam. It was pretty fun for what it was and I enjoyed the model manipulator aspects of gear (not quite the level of Spore, but it was fun enough). I tried playing it a while back but it said the server was down and it never came back up before I got tired of waiting and uninstalled. :disappoint:
Well today is the last day the servers are going to be up and I haven't seen anything change so tomorrow its dead most likely.
