Can someone recommend good mods that aren't brutal doom? Like, HD texture packs, or cool maps, or stuff like that. I agree, reloading and iron sights aren't very Doom-like.

The Space Pirate is pretty cool too, it doesn't add anything massively different, but your weapons are all pretty creatively different (For example, the shotgun has different shell types: Poison, Shock, Normal, and I think Fire). Wrath Of Chronos is a more complex mod that plays better with Heretic or Hexen, but still works fine in Doom's levels. You choose one of I think 5 classes, and you can level up skills and attributes, so you do more melee damage or jump and run higher and faster. Shut Up And Bleed is a slower gameplay WAD that has more of a survival horror feel, rather then the crazy action of Vanilla Doom. You walk by default instead of running, and in general it has more survival horror elements, you take more damage and ammo is less plentiful. Nazis! replaces enemies and weapons with Nazis and WW2 era guns. It's simple, but it feels different enough to be a fun change. For maps, definitely play Unloved. It's a horror WAD that has an almost Silent Hill-like atmosphere, and it's really really good. Cheogsh, Deus Vult 2, and Going Down are some map WADs I enjoyed as well.
Not bad for a game that is as old as me, I'm actually considering getting Doom just to place this. Does it need Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, or Final Doom and do the Steam versions work?
the steam versions work fine
Whats the thing that wobbles under the shotgun? A sling?
Testicles.
Don't forget GMOTA, by Facepunch's very own user 'Kegan'. GMOTA is a hodgepodge of SNES-era nostalgia, put into a first person Doom wad.
The recent Contra Doom mod is also a blast of fun, too, and Kegan himself posted about it in the Doom general thread. There's a lot of great mods out there, you just have to dig well for them.
You can find the original DOOM.wad and DOOM2.wad pretty much anywhere since they're pretty much vaporware but the wads steam gives are exactly the same.
They're not vaporware if they're still being sold. It would still be considered illegal to download them.
They're not vaporware if they're still being sold. It would still be considered illegal to download them.
you can, however, use the free-to-acquire shareware versions of the game for some of the wads, as far as i knkw
Did that Baron of Hell throw an explosive barrel?

Revenants will also throw lesser enemies at you if they get agitated enough.
I am now fully erect.
But lots of mods like Brutal Doom do not work with those. Anyone wanting to try out Brutal Doom or any of the other mods in general has their best bet buying Doom from Steam on a sale or something.
Brutal DOOM V20 is confirmed to be released with a modified version of FreeDOOM so you don't even need the original DOOM and DOOM2 wads.

GMOTA is a hodgepodge of SNES-era nostalgia, put into a first person Doom wad.
The annoyingly prevalent domination of this mod on the DOOM modding scene discussion is why I made 3 videos on wads that WEREN'T BD while there was a big youtube surge of BD videos due to awards and things. Thanks for reminding me of GMOTA, I need to play it more and maybe cover it now that it has updated significantly since I last played. I don't personally have anything against BD, it has some interesting ideas and some nice work put into it. I just can't help but get annoyed at it nowadays due to the creators actions and how every one takes it as "What if Doom were made today? It's like THE TRUE ULTIMATE DOOM EXPERIENCE." Imagine if every time Stalker modding was mentioned everyone just said "Yeah Complete is the end all be all of Stalker mods, you don't need anything else" you'd probably slap them in the face.
theres also this list for all the greatest classics http://www.doomworld.com/10years/bestwads/ every doomer needs to play action doom atleast once
Don't forget the Cacoawards. Pretty major for those not involved in the Doom scene to pick up on some good wads.
The annoyingly prevalent domination of this mod on the DOOM modding scen
Brutal Doom is good, but it's not Doom. And it is certainly way too obnoxiously popular with people who have little to zero experience with Doom outside vague memories and then trying BD. There's way, way, WAY too much good shit the Doom community puts out that gets glossed over because of BD. :v:
They're not vaporware if they're still being sold. It would still be considered illegal to download them.
It was abandonware 5 years ago and is on every abandonware site until they made zdoom and somebody put it up on steam for sale, they stopped selling it 10-15 years ago then started selling it on steam once people got it to work on modern hardware

My asshole is ready FEED ME A STRAY IMP Jesus christ I can't calm my tits over this, I CANT FUCKING WAIT.
If your problem with Vanilla doom is visuals and you like the cool sprite stuff BD does, I highly recommend Smooth Doom. Completely vanilla gameplay, but there's new gore effects, smoother animations for nearly everything, variable monster death animations. It's really great and I can't imagine playing vanilla any other way anymore, it's such an improvement to things that I am sure id would have done something similar if their technical limitations allowed them to.

It was always on sale on ID's site, and they were releasing ports for it on everything. Also there were source ports before zDoom
Revenants will also throw lesser enemies at you if they get agitated enough.
DID SOMEONE SAY AGITATION? [vid]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8380892/WEbms/Pfffhahaha.webm[/vid]
DID SOMEONE SAY AGITATION? [vid]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8380892/WEbms/Pfffhahaha.webm[/vid]
I was so surprised when that actually happened to me.
the Steam versions will work and it works with any of those things. Protip though: there's way better than Brutal Doom. Don't just limit your modding to play BD, a lot of people including myself in the Doom community really don't like the mod since it made our modding all about Brutal Doom and people only care about Brutal Doom. We've made way cooler stuff than Brutal Doom but nobody cares and you should really try and look at the other stuff we've made that's cool if you're interested. you can PM me if you would like me to help you get it working, since it's not as simple as 'installing Doom from Steam and running the game with the mod'. yes, he's racist and a huge fuckin dickbag. He got banned from the ZDoom forums, which is the base sourceport he's using to make this mod. He's banned from some other major Doom communities as well, as is all discussion about Brutal Doom. It's why he uses Moddb these days, because most Doom communities have banned him and discussion of his mod outright.
Tbh this comes off as people being rather envious towards him because he actually managed to make his mod popular.
I wish Doom 64 had gotten more mods or maps.
Tbh this comes off as people being rather envious towards him because he actually managed to make his mod popular.
You're not the first one to say that. Mark himself usually tells people to stop being jealous too. Besides the racism he used to be a bit of an egocentric credit stealer as well, though I've heard he sites his sources rather than just claiming he did it all himself. Also he got banned from a lot of communities because his attitude stinks. I mean he got the boot from the Zdoom forums because he told a member to go kill himself and gave detailed instructions on how to do so. The guy has reputation of being an abrasive jerk for a reason you know. His mod is usually plagued with weird issues too, I don't think it was until very recently that gibs finally stopped blocking elevators, I also heard something about flying blood droplets hurting players too. Also directly unrelated to the mod's quality but his code is a horrifying tangled mess of spaghetti code. I love the trailer though, and there's good ideas within brutal doom, though most have been done before. Most of the doom community just get fed up with people wanting brutal doom compatibility with everything, the misinformation that's spread around, and how people say brutal doom is the best doom mod ever and how everyone should aspire to make something like it.

BD is honestly a pretty neat mod and can be a lot of fun to play, especially online, but it's off putting how many people will say that it's the "only way to play Doom" as if Doom itself and the countless other amazing mods that it's spawned isn't enough. Not to mention the creator is a massive dickhead, but that's not really a big issue with me. Doom is a great game. Brutal Doom is a fun mod, but it shouldn't be overshadowing Doom itself like it's starting to. Zen Dynamics is my favorite Doom mod of all time, but I never once thought that it's the only thing people should play. Doom has one of the best modding communities I've ever seen, BD included, so it'd just be nice to see some other neat mods featured for once.
