The Irish kinda turned out pretty well considering their treatment under the British.
The Irish kinda turned out pretty well considering their treatment under the British.
not even remotely comparable. irish were never forcefully taken from their homeland, stripped of their culture entirely and then enslaved only to continue facing over a hundred years of discrimination after gaining their freedom. 'oh but the potato famine!' 'oh but those highly exaggerated 'irish need not apply' signs!'
My ancestors were all too poor to afford slaves, no white guilt here.
My ancestors were pirates and took a stance against slavery.

Don't worry dude we'll find a way to blame them anyway

Talking about historical impact on modern society, in regards to racism at least, is the one reason I'm happy my family has always been too poor and too Scottish to own slaves or contribute in any meaningful way to slavery
Then again they also spent a considerable amount of time burning farms and raping women in the Scottish Marches so maybe I shouldn't be happy

They just integrated easier but lol people like to forget about the fact that it was easier to ship from Europe than to go around and Ireland was colonized easily because they fucking deported a lot of them after wars.
I don't get it, it's not like the whites went to Africa with lassos and captured blacks left and right.. (One of my elementary school teachers told me white people captured black people in africa and brought them back as slaves and I actually believed that for a really long time.)
Anyways while they may have been treated unfair for a long time living in America is significantly better than what they would've had to live like in Africa. And videos like this, while pretty funny, will only hold black people, as a race, back.

I can see where you're coming from but my poor Slavic great grandparents definitely did not benefit much from the system, considering one of their sons was lynched along with a slew of other crimes perpetrated against them. Even now my family isn't exactly elevated on some level above African Americans because of our race (at least not economically). I can recognize that on a personal level I benefit from being white but historically it hasn't meant much by way of my families treatment here.
Is this that new Macklemore collab?
Like seriously never fucking forget english colonialism in Ireland.

Arabs and tribals captured slaves and sold them at trade ports along the ivory or gold coast.
We weren't involved with the capture since it was more work than was profitable.

i agree the fucked up way the british treated the irish shouldn't be forgotten, but it's not entirely relevant is it

Some (most) would consider a life lived in freedom where you get to choose how you live is significantly better than simply surviving a little longer in slavery. I mean making light of slavery because "Well things would've been worse in Africa" is kinda fucked up and a sweeping generalization. Not to mention the massive effects the slave trade had on the population of western Africa as a whole. It really fucked things over.

Aside from the fact that this entire post is factually wrong, the way its worded irritates me.

Not American here but one of my great uncles died protecting a slave.

maybe i was being a bit antagonistic, but it irritates me when people try to belittle how fucked over african americans were/are by saying 'oh well irish got it just as bad'
that was a new post not an edit? when people say irish i guess i was assuming they were referring to irish americans since black history month is an american thing
Wait, are you serious? You saw my post mentioning the Irish and their treatment under the English, and you assumed I was talking about Irish-Americans?

yes yes, it's all about feeling guilty that must be it

I had 4 men in my family including my great, great, great-grandfather fight for Dixie. Am I super guilty?
Wait, are you serious? You saw my post talking about Irish and their treatment under the British, and you assumed I was talking about Irish-Americans?
no i was meaning his posts about irish but i admit i probably got a little turned around/confused for a second there. so let me just say, blacks in america have been more fucked over than irish were by britain. sure, the irish were fucked over too but not as bad, and even then what does it matter? it's not about who got it worse, and in the case of african americans it's about they're STILL getting it bad, they still face racism and discrimination and all that shit
I had 4 men in my family including my great, great, great-grandfather fight for Dixie. Am I super guilty?
Clearly the only way to fix this rancid stain on your family is to wear a yoke and toil in the bean fields for a summer, just to get a taste of the horrible conditions your family forced upon people a hundred and fifty years ago.
Sins of the father get passed to the son, after all.
