ugh black people got their own history month in an attempt to acknowledge how fucked over they've been in america, how can i make this about me?
the thing is, even if your ancestors never owned slaves, if you're white in america you still benefited from slavery and racism. if you're black in america you're still fucked over from slavery and racism
A lot of people rated this guy down but he's sociologically correct. Institutionally America is much more favorable towards white people than black, and tons of blacks are discriminated against still, especially when it comes to real estate and gentrification.
Well all sides of my family were too busy being fucked over by the Czars in Russia. So really they were slaves in themselves. Because they were serfs, ya' know?
ITT: no one cares what your ancestors did
Clearly hating on people for things they are not responsible for in any way and had/have no control over is the best way to go about your business
Apparently my great something or other was like the owner of the 3rd most slaves in Virginia or something, buuut if anyone expects me to feel guilty about that or bad or anything I think that's pretty silly.
god you guys need to get over yourself, it's BLACK history month, it's not about you being a 'victim' of 'white guilt' it's about BLACK HISTORY. sorry if alot of black history in the united states revolves around them being enslaved and then facing discrimination after they gained freedom and continuing to face discrimination now, sorry if that makes you feel guilty, but again it's not about YOU
well what if i want asian history month
gee i dunno, maybe post about it facepunch? that should work
gee i dunno, maybe post about it facepunch? that should work
fuck you honkie i do what i want

"If you're white in America then you benefited from slavery and you should feel guilty. What's that, you feel guilty? Well not everything is about you, you self centered prick! Maybe you should feel even more guilty about being so selfish. In summation, go fuck yourself."
where did i say you should feel guilty? can you somehow not acknowledge that you benefit from something and someone else doesn't without feeling guilty about it?
But hes right though if you are white in america you benefit from slavery and it's ongoing effects and the ongoing racism.
where did i say you should feel guilty? can you somehow not acknowledge that you benefit from something and someone else doesn't without feeling guilty about it?
a lot of people are just unable to understand the concept of privilege. they think any comment that says "you/your ancestors benefited from this and/or weren't discriminated against" means "YOU NEED TO BE GUILTY OF YOUR WHITENESS!"
a lot of people are just unable to understand the concept of privilege. they think any comment that says "you/your ancestors benefited from this and/or weren't discriminated against" means "YOU NEED TO BE GUILTY OF YOUR WHITENESS!"
i tried to not say privilege because that word seems to make people go crazy
i tried to not say privilege because that word seems to make people go crazy
oh yeah, that too.
people understand it even less when you use the word that describes the concept the best.

whats the point of telling me that my ancestors benefited from slavery? what relevance does that have to anything?
you don't need to be guilty but you need to be aware of it and work against racism in society.
[editline]5th February 2014[/editline]
privilege is the opposite of oppression and it's a legit academic thing that tumblr SJW's ect took and turned into something that holds no meaning in non academic settings
whats the point of telling me that my ancestors benefited from slavery? what relevance does that have to anything?
Because wealth is passed down through generations in most cases, and thanks to the ongoing presense of racism, if you are white or appear to be white you are at an advantage compared to black people and people who appear to have dark skin.
whats the point of telling me that my ancestors benefited from slavery? what relevance does that have to anything?
it's valuable information? knowing about our past helps us with the future.
history likes to repeat itself, so it's a good idea to keep this kind of stuff in mind so we can actively prevent it from happening again.

i'd like to add to this before somebody asks.
somebody in these threads always goes in and says "privilege doesn't exist because >>>>I<<<< don't benefit from it! i'm poor/been robbed/have no education, and i'm white!"
that's because privilege is a statistical advantage. just because you, an individual, do not benefit from it doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. i can bring up some sources if you guys like, but statistically more white people go to and graduate from high-tier colleges than pocs. statistically, white people have a higher chance of getting parole from prison than pocs.
again, it's statistics, privilege isn't some special box that every white person gets when they're born.

thanks for not answering the question at all

i wasn't planning on wrangling up some slaves, but i'll be sure to keep this info in my pocket. thanks, MilkAndCookies.

wow so we're not even people in the eyes of milkandcooki
we're pocs
racism confirmed

so it's possible to be white or appear white and not benefit from white privilege
well what if i want asian history month
There is one. Nobody participates.
whats the point of telling me that my ancestors benefited from slavery?
Driving down wages and such. My ancestors were Quakers and I'm not white so I'm exempt from all that guilt you guys have to feel.
whats the point of telling me that my ancestors benefited from slavery? what relevance does that have to anything?
because if your ancestors did, then you do too, if you're white then you do too. if you're white in america, you benefit from slavery and racism whereas blacks do not (please don't say, well they get to live in america!). you don't have to feel guilty about it, but you should at least acknowledge it because if you don't acknowledge that a problem exists then it will never be solved.
so it's possible to be white or appear white and not benefit from white privilege
you need to confess your ancestorial sins to your nearest poc.
we then convene in a congress deep in a poc gathering cave and decide whether or not you are exempt
so it's possible to be white or appear white and not benefit from white privilege
no it's possible to still have a shit life and be white.
[editline]5th February 2014[/editline]
poor white people don't disprove white privilege just like rich black people don't disprove discrimination against blacks
it's valuable information? knowing about our past helps us with the future.

It's about as likely to repeat itself as witch hunting.
True, I just looked up the numbers and "vast majority" seems to underestimate just how many slave owners there were in the South.
Slaves and the indentured also came in every color.
No one is asking for your guilt, they are asking for your remorse.
Guilt is a plus side though since by benefiting from an unjust system you are culpable to that system.
[editline]5th February 2014[/editline]
Slaves and the indentured also came in every color.
Slavery in America was sorta a distinct blacks only thing
It's about as likely to repeat itself as witch hunting.
you'd be surprised. awful race-related tragedies have happened since slavery was abolished in the US.
there's a very big one that happened midway through the 20th century... not sure if it's significant or not lol!
[editline]5th February 2014[/editline]
and thats the biggest cop-out response i've ever heard
"oh, it's unlikely to happen again. let's just ignore it because ugh i hate realizing that people in the past were bad!!!"
