Slavery in America was sorta a distinct blacks only thing
Outright slavery perhaps but there were plenty of indentured servants from England, particularly in the South.
That said, a distinction must be made between indentured servitude and the chattel slavery that was inflicted almost exclusively onto Africans and their descendants.
My ancestors on my fathers side owned a plantation and fought for the Confederacy during the American Civil War.
wow so we're not even people in the eyes of milkandcooki
we're pocs
racism confirmed
Isn't it terribly racist to call white people "white" and everyone else "people of color". As if these people somehow have an abnormal color on their skin and therefore need to be identified that way. Stupid.
I hate the term "PoC", it sounds like something you'd only use in american insurance commercials
Also because it separates people into groups more than it actually helps against racism but hey it's tumblr so it won't make any difference, it all stays inside of the delusional social justice world anyway
I would definitely give Kenan Thompson a hug.

Person of color became an alternative to the word "minority" decades before tumblr (or the internet, for that matter) was even a thing.

Still one of the more racist-sounding labels I've heard.

uh what scenario would someone use that in an insurance commercial? The one where they're explicitly TRYING to go out of business?
Even if my ancestors had black slaves, I'm not feeling guilty at all same way I'm not guilty about my grandpa fighting for soviets.

AFAIK it's rude to call someone coloured over here, it's odd in America it seems to be split into just white and not-white but that's their history I guess
"PoC" or "coloured" makes it sound like someone blacked up or something
African Americans forget their own brothers sold them in to slavery in massive numbers too.
i wish white people were slaves
i wish white people were slaves
And they were and still are sometimes. Slavery didnt go away because a couple of countries made it illegal. It's still very much active.
One of the most prominent areas is the Arab peninsula.

"poc" is a term that's kept on life support by groups such as the tumblr SJW crowd and really needs to be put down, it's hardly different to how people who weren't white got called "coloured" and seperated decades ago
it would be a good step towards getting rid of the "us vs them" attitude that some people have when it comes to topics such as discrimination

They need to know that on an especially global domain such as the internet, it's too much an america-centric term

Guilt is a plus side though since by benefiting from an unjust system you are culpable to that system.

Read you some books.
not even remotely comparable. irish were never forcefully taken from their homeland, stripped of their culture entirely and then enslaved only to continue facing over a hundred years of discrimination after gaining their freedom. 'oh but the potato famine!' 'oh but those highly exaggerated 'irish need not apply' signs!'
huh
they kind of did
irish were used to breed with blacks to produce better slaves
maybe i was being a bit antagonistic, but it irritates me when people try to belittle how fucked over african americans were/are by saying 'oh well irish got it just as bad'
I'd rather point to Yellow Fever, treatment of the Native Americans and such.
Most immigrants got shit all over, even the Germans. Not nearly to the same degree though.

Actually the Irish in Jamaica got there pretty much the same way Africans did and were treated in the same way, to take the focus off America for a sec
Black, Irish, same thing, we were all niggers to the slavers :v:

exactly, not nearly to the same degree
[editline]6th February 2014[/editline]
although on the native american front i agree entirely, the way they were & still are treated is quite despicable

alright, yes, i've agreed that irish were treated bad back in the day. who still feels the affects of this shit? who ARE still the 'niggers' to the slavers? hint: it's not anyone named fitzpatrick
do native americans have a national month
because, y'know, the whole forced colonization/rape/murder/etc.
edit:
huh, apparently it's in november. wonder why no one ever talks about it but makes a big deal out of black history month.

Probably because there's barely any left.
Probably because there's barely any left.
Well that sucks.
especially since my family has Cherokee roots.
again, it's statistics, privilege isn't some special box that every white person gets when they're born.
Which is exactly what the problem with the concept is.
Which is exactly what the problem with the concept is.
How is that a problem with the concept?
It's not really a problem with the concept as much as it is a problem with how places like tumblr treat the concept
It's not really a problem with the concept as much as it is a problem with how places like tumblr treat the concept
Or a problem with how people automatically equate privilege with "feeling guilty" and then don't budge from that idea even after someone explains it.
It happens in every single thread here about feminism or racism.
