How is that a problem with the concept?
Because I don't think we should act like there's a limited amount of betterment for the disadvantaged to go around, so there's no reason to arrange groups of people by how likely to be disadvantaged they are, outliers shmoutliers.
African Americans forget their own brothers sold them in to slavery in massive numbers too.
Well that was how the slave trade worked. They used the wealth from the slave trade to buy slaves from the berbers and wealthy African princes.
WAS WONDERING WHEN TUMBLR WOULD BE BROUGHT UP LOL
I'm waiting for the Fedora wearing reddit user insultments.
Why are people talking about Tumblr in this thread? If you have never seen the words "person of color" mentioned outside of that website than I'd suggest reading up more on US history or simply getting out more. It's an alternative to "minority" it is seen as more inclusive or accurate. Can we get back on topic? There are enough threads on FP with people whining about a website no one really cares about.
Because all feminism everywhere is represented by the vocal idiots on tumblr and there's nothing like a good circlejerk to defeat a discussion of social inequality
Also as it turns out the ultimate social justice warrior himself Martin Luther King Jr actually used person of color in a speech to describe himself.
So whites are people without color?
that's because privilege is a statistical advantage. just because you, an individual, do not benefit from it doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. i can bring up some sources if you guys like, but statistically more white people go to and graduate from high-tier colleges than pocs. statistically, white people have a higher chance of getting parole from prison than pocs. again, it's statistics, privilege isn't some special box that every white person gets when they're born.
I wonder how much of those statistics that is racism now a days as opposed to the culture that a good portion black americans grew up in. The gangsta culture or ghetto culture. Which is still definitely a culture that grew due to slavery leading Africans into poor neighborhoods. So white people are still privileged alas all we can do is stop treating peoples as groups and instead treat them as individuals.
Which is still definitely a culture that grew due to slavery leading Africans into poor neighborhoods. So white people are still privileged alas all we can do is stop treating peoples as groups and instead treat them as individuals.
It wasn't exactly slave culture as much as gentrification and the overall lack of higher opportunities presented to minorities (specifically blacks). This paired with real estate bias IE: realtors not selling homes to black people in "white" neighborhoods means that whole "gangster culture" arose as more of a counter culture to the system forcing them into poverty.
"white" neighborhoods means that whole "gangster culture" arose as more of a counter culture to the system forcing them into poverty.
That or just a lack of an education/opportunities and poverty.
That or just a lack of an education/opportunities and poverty.
which was a result of..?
lol, yeah see this is some privilege right here. outliers? nah, take a look at the discrimination within the job market, discrimination within the justice system and shit like that before talking about outliers
What? I'm saying you can't write things off as outliers. I don't think it's good enough to say, "well it's just statistics" when someone points out how not everyone benefits from privilege.
which was a result of..?
Well I don't deny that racism has existed and still exists? Painting Gang culture as some solidarity movement is a bit silly.
Well I don't deny that racism has existed and still exists? Painting Gang culture as some solidarity movement is a bit silly.
he wasn't calling it a solidarity movement, he was saying that it's a counter culture that happens as a result of being forced into poverty. and he's right, it happened with the italian americans, it happened with irish americans
But hes right though if you are white in america you benefit from slavery and it's ongoing effects and the ongoing racism.
So by that logic the only people who aren't affected by racism are mixed people
So by that logic the only people who aren't affected by racism are mixed people
no the only people that aren't affected by (institutionalized) racism are people with white skin. mixed race, but look white? noone will care. mixed race but look black? you're black
that's why I always mark white on all of my job applications so they don't get instantly thrown away
i know you're trying to be funny, but there is proof that employers are less likely to call back or follow up on job applications where the NAME sounds black (or at least non-white)
i know you're trying to be funny, but there is proof that employers are less likely to call back or follow up on job applications where the NAME sounds black (or at least non-white)
do i look like i'm trying to be funny
What? I'm saying you can't write things off as outliers. I don't think it's good enough to say, "well it's just statistics" when someone points out how not everyone benefits from privilege.
well alright, you can though? morgan freeman being rich isn't proof that there is no such thing as racism against blacks, he is literally an outlier, just like joe dirt being trailer trash isn't proof there is no such thing as white privilege.
You know who's most disadvantaged in america? Poor people. Especially poor black men, but the poor who come from, know only, are surrounded by, and have no social connections outside of poverty are the most disadvantaged.
i tried to not say privilege because that word seems to make people go crazy
maybe if we say all the berserker words FP will just shut down check your privilege social justice patriarchy misognist feminism rape culture trigger warning trans cis womyn shaming victim blaming ableist tumblr
You know who's most disadvantaged in america? Poor people. Especially poor black men, but the poor who come from, know only, are surrounded by, and have no social connections outside of poverty are the most disadvantaged.
yes, poverty is the worst thing and it is the way people are disenfranchised the most. the thing is, blacks are in poverty because of racism, many blacks REMAIN in poverty because of racism. i'll agree though, discrimination against the poor is probably just as prevalent (although blacks get discriminated against regardless of wealth)
White guilt free, everyone from my grandparents up lived in northern Europe.
Irish/Scottish descent checking in, we got fucked over pretty hard too and didn't have shit to do with slavery :v: Hurray~
so it's possible to be white or appear white and not benefit from white privilege
lmao no it isn't because you won't be experiencing widespread racism. [editline]6th February 2014[/editline]
you need to confess your ancestorial sins to your nearest poc. we then convene in a congress deep in a poc gathering cave and decide whether or not you are exempt
so instead of, you know, actually saying something intelligent, you resort to taking the piss, way to admit you don't know what you are talking about and have nothing smart or thought out to say on the issue.
Actually the Irish in Jamaica got there pretty much the same way Africans did and were treated in the same way, to take the focus off America for a sec Black, Irish, same thing, we were all niggers to the slavers :v:
No they weren't actually. Irish were cheaper as slaves and it got to the point where the Royal African Company stepped in and forbid breeding of Irish with Africans. Irish were 5 pounds versus 50-90 pounds for Africans. It was a thing where at the time being Catholic was the fucking worse thing imaginable and they were seen as lesser than Africans because of it. JFK being elected pretty much caused that to dwindle down. [editline]6th February 2014[/editline] I'D ARGUE THAT IT'S STILL ACTIVE BECAUSE THERE'S STILL A LOT OF DISCRIMINATION AGAINST THE GINGER. [editline]6th February 2014[/editline]
Solution: Don't read tumblr Congrats you're freed from the grasp of brutal tumblr liberal fascism
Tumblr argues that whites should take black penises as social justice and it's a large part of their community. Black people in mass poverty was more of a result of their mass migration towards cities in the 1860's and 1960's. If you look at the start of the boom of the middle class, it was entirely the result of people migrating to upstart towns rather than cities at full capacity.
do i look like i'm trying to be funny
Maybe next time use those big letters at the start so people know you aren't just being nonchalant.
