I'm sad that some of the things shown there didn't make it to the full version, like for example terrain displacement. Also, what is it with the old textures/models still being there and the combine in Ravenholm? Wasn't this like 6 months before release? Did they manage to change that much stuff right before release?

However with the whole source code leak thing it was silently pushed back into 2004 due to the public talk of how unfinished it seemed in the leak. And ended up being released in November 2004.
When this video came out and I saw it on a demo disc age 8, my only experience of Half-Life was of repeatedly playing up to the resonance cascade in HL1 because I was too scared of the aliens to keep going.
Reminds me of my adventures with Sonic the Hedgehog. I could only play up to the 2nd level, after which I pressed the reset button since I was too scared to keep going.
I am pretty sure terrain displacements are in the retail version.
Nope, they removed it. And even when it was in, it did not update the collisions.
wow that bit with the combine chasing him through the house still sparks my imagination. it's so fucking cool. it's a real shame that all of the gun combat in the final game didn't have anything like that sense of survivalist drive. you just shot everyone
I remember getting HL2 as a christmas gift in 2004. I booted it up and my PC struggled when there was nothing but Gmans face on-screen. Nowadays my phone could probably run it maxed out. :v:
You tell me how it was the true beginning of steam
I remember when I got to that bit in Route Canal where you had to swim when I first played it, I had to buy the strategy guide because I was scared of anything being in the water.
What was Gman saying in that language bit anyway? Assuming it was an actual language.
I remember getting it for Christmas then my PC running it sort of good.. I was having fits of excitement while it was installing.
What was Gman saying in that language bit anyway? Assuming it was an actual language.
It's definitely Mandarin chinese and I have a vague idea what he's saying, but I don't have it locked down enough that I could accurately translate. (I AM chinese and I hear it every day, yet I know more german then I do chinese :v:). The closest I could guess is "It looks like we don't have any matching aspects." or something along those lines. "Aspects" is the only word I'm not sure on, since that word in chinese is pretty contextual.
This game was what got me into games design, I played up until Ravenholm and was too scared to continue so learned how to use Hammer in attempt to make the rest of it myself. I'm getting old. :(
i was like 12 when i first saw this, i never get tired of that 486 joke ! I remember getting HL2 for Christmas in 2004 and my parents having to almost force me off of the computer because I literally wouldn't stop playing. I think I had just gotten to the beginning of Highway 17 when my Mum was like "How about you come spend some time with your relatives?" and all I could think was The resistance is my family now.
"It seems as though we will not have the chance to cooperate." Paraphrased, not exact translation.
sounds similar to what he says when you don't go through the portal in half life 1. 'Well, it looks like we wont be working together. No regrets, Mr Freeman." also, I love Gmans expression at the end. Gets me every time.
I remember downloading the demo the day it came out, it was suprised that it was like 3gb.

God damn, nostalgic as fuck. Something about that Depot(?) demo looked absolutely stunning, I wish it would've been kept in some way. But with age, you can tell tell that the entire map was just for showcasing several features, not a whole lot of free gameplay.
wow, that is a neat physics gun. wish they used that instead of the lame recolored gravity gun in gmod
I wish the weapons was the same from the trailer, I always preferred them.
remember when you were awed by these graphics?
I still am, not because "ZOMG SO REALISTIC', but because they've aged extremely well. Even ten years on the game still looks good.
Makes me wonder what Half Life 3 will be like.
All I can remember when I first time playing was trouble connecting to Steam, Stutter, Low FPS.... and yet I had best time ever playing it.
I want to be able to push objects in front of doors to block combine/other enemies from getting through them in half-life 3. When I was younger, I ALWAYS used to do this in HL2. I would pile up all the objects i could find in a doorway or something and try to prevent the NPCs from getting in, like this room in ravenholm [t]http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs22/f/2009/243/c/3/Ravenholm_Bedroom_raw_by_Insane_Maniac_Albedo.jpg[/t]
Makes me wonder what Half Life 3 will be like.
Probably next-level. There were only 5 years between HL1 and 2 and it's a fucking gulf of difference.

Only to find out that they can just open the door no problem.
I think I did the same thing. Only to find out that they can just open the door no problem.
Or the door swings open in the other direction.
i never realised that they were called the combine because of how the fortress eats through the city, literally like a massive combine
