i never realised that they were called the combine because of how the fortress eats through the city, literally like a massive combine
no they're called the combine because they combine with the species of the planets they assimilate.
they call themselves the universal union.
Half-Life has such an interesting lore.

I wish it wasn't wasted
What happened to the dynamic displacement maps? I don't recall the source engine allowing the terrain to deform on the fly at any point within any valve map ever released...

removed before released, someone talked about it on first page
I may be off base here, but I still think HL2 is fucking beautiful and holds up extremely well. Some games out today are visually less appealing than HL2.
Oh hey, I remember how my brother bought a pirated copy of HL2
[sp]It was beta leak[/sp]
everytime i see that video i wonder what fans of Half-Life were thinking when they first saw the Combine or any of the Synths.
Does anything run on a 486?
I never saw dynamic displacement maps in Source...

I think it's because of the consistent art direction and lets be honest, abandoned insustry areas and destroyed cieties are perfect for good graphics aging, the first Stalker still looks good too.
Man, I always regret not knowing about HL sooner. I got the orange box for Christmas 2008 because my friends constantly talked about TF2 and gmod in school. Back then that's all I did come home and play either TF2, gmod or Counter Strike gun game online with my friends from school. I remember I played both Half-Life 2 and Portal in between Christmas and New Year. Back when I had the demo I remember seeing the legs hanging in Ravenholme and being way to scared to go on. Things were so much easier then.

I got the Orange Box back in 07'. I got to the same part in Ravenholme and I could not play the game, so for some reason I decided to play EP1 instead. Great idea, a town full of zombies is nothing compared to claustrophobic pitch black caved in tunnels full of suicide zombies. But unfortunately I didn't know that.
I'm not 9, I'm just a pussy.
I miss some features, like the better rebel AI and the extra detail on the coast levels, but the original story was so convoluted.
Still love the final product, and how the beta plot points have been reused in the episode.
I never noticed this before, but were they originally doing something like a two-weapon-limit? He has to drop his shotgun to pick up the RPG.
This is why consoles suck, they have to dumb the games down and remove good features.
The jump between Half-Life 1 (or anything around before 2003) and Half-Life 2 is earth-shattering.
The jump between Half-Life 2 and almost any next-gen game (PS4, XBone) is tame by comparison.
Half Life 3 can't possibly live up to the impact this game made, and that makes me sad.
We've already had the greatest moment of advance in game technology, and you just watched it.
[sp]Please prove me wrong, Valve. Please.[/sp]

I think Valve has something in store for us. we can't imagine it, because we didn't imagine HL2 being that amazing.
I remember having a demo disc also, it was Half Life Uplink demo or something. Remember the zombie that comes out of that dark corner after you get out of the elevator? yeah that's where all my nightmares have originated from since.
Even today the headcrab zombie is quite disturbing, so imagine seeing it for the first time when your like 9 or 10. Infact I used to get my mates over and make them play it and tell them to look at the dark corner untill that thing reared it's gruesome self. They always freaked out hard.
I remember having the demo disc along with Counter Strike: Condition Zero.
I was disappointed because I thought the disc contained the full game and not videos.

Oh my God, I'm so glad I managed to find mine just barely. All the memories...
I got the HL2 E3 demo video with my pre purchase of Counter-strike Condition Zero.
So that was mid 2004 that came out, so I was playing games with goldsrc graphics like CS, TFC, ETC.
Popped that demo disc in even before playing cs:cz, and I honestly thought Gman was a real person, shit was so insane looking back then.
Then the physics happened and my dick came hard, except the disc I have is a shortened version of this one, doesnt have people talking but its the same areas.
I even still have the disc in a safe spot along with all my physical copy of HL2, but not the boxes which sucks ass, fucking HL2 came on like 5 discs or some shit, a fucking PC FPS had 5 discs to install.
I still love Half-Life 2. I will replay it every so often. Whether it be vanilla version, with some weapon mods, or something like Smod. It is all extremely fun. The fakefactory mod (minus the absolutely retarded nude models and other stupid shit like that) put new life into an older game by upgrading graphics.
The physics are still not bad when they're used for their intended creation (which isn't large multi object scenarios like Garry's-mod puts them under, rather 2 or 3 object interactions).
I still am, not because "ZOMG SO REALISTIC', but because they've aged extremely well. Even ten years on the game still looks good.
Half-Life 2 is the earliest 3D game I know where the 3D felt realistic, and even 10 years later I still feel how it's pushing technology limits.
HL2 had great texture design. Even if the game may not have modern shaders and shit, a lot of the textures looked like real surfaces.
The characters especially - combine that with the facial animation system and even if texture quality is kind of low they still look pretty damn good.
Compare them to stuff like this

HL2's stuff holds up a lot better.
I have looked up a bunch of stuff in HL2 that was planned or made but didn't make it into release and honestly I was kinda disappointed when I read about it - a lot of those things would have made HL2 into a much darker game, that's my major issue with HL2, the story is really dark and awesome but in the game it's not done justice.

I think it'd be nice if VALVe develop some of their older ideas, like the child workers, the Blade Runner style environments, and more emphasis on the "Big Brother is watching" aspects, maybe in a separate universe.
I honestly think HL2 still looks great

Yeah, it'd be nice to see a completely different Valve FPS. But who knows? A lot of cut HL2 content happens to show up in later episodes, maybe we'll see a bit more in the next installation(Besides Borealis, of course.)

It's hard to believe Half-Life 2 is almost ten years old now. I remember downloading this video from PlanetHalfLife when I was 13 and becoming obsessed.
I remember getting this video with a DVD that came with PC Gamer. Watched it endlessly waiting to play that.
