Sure freedom of expression is important, but that Vilks guy is just a massive idiot. He pisses off muslims on purpose and regard their reactions as his "art". If you want to criticize a religion, fine. But just going "LOL, ISLAM" isn't art or criticism, it's just being a cunt.
I would flip out if I saw Vilks in real life. He is one of the few men I don't think deserve to walk on this planet.
I would flip out if I saw Vilks in real life. He is one of the few men I don't think deserve to walk on this planet.
yo i don't think you understand all of the stuff he does is to show how important freedom of speech is
While I think uneducated bashing of religion is uncalled for, in order to maintain the seriousness of freedom of speech we need to just let these people be. As soon as we start trying to make these sorts of things illegal, freedom of speech is a joke. We already have things in place to reduce offensive materials reaching the public. You won't see these things on television, or hear them on the radio. Places like youtube and vimeo are the few places one could find these things. I am not supporting either side here. The person who made the video is acting childish, and the people getting super offended and proposing censorship need to fuck off.
Why exactly were they showing the film in the first place?
That is true, however, from all the videos I've seen, muslims seem to lack that 'tolerance' you speak of.
hello i've seen a lot of youtube videos and i think
oh my god all of the people chanting and screaming about how Vilks is gay need to grow the fuck up
I don't get how this is Freedom of Speech. Putting images of someone's religion overlapping with pictures of naked men and other explicit images doesn't really make sense. If I went up to a fat person and shouted at them, calling them words such as "fatty!" and "you're so obese, yuck!", that'd be abuse, not Freedom of Speech, and I'm pretty sure I'd get in a lot of trouble from my actions (both by the law and society). So really, I see this as abuse, rather than Freedom of Speech. As a Theist, and a previous Muslim, I kind of found the video hurtful, because I felt it was just Vilks was merely trying to provoke people, and then defend himself by claiming Freedom of Speech. There's a fine line between Freedom of Speech and abuse. I think Vilks is just being abusive.

Using the Miller test at least, the video gets affirmative answers on the first two questions, but the third one gets a negative, meaning it is protected. Vilks was in the right, because he can produce a video like that. The mere fact that he was assaulted over it means that he managed to bring forth a serious problem in the freedom of speech discussion. That problem being Muslims who think they have the right not to be offended.
Why exactly were they showing the film in the first place?
He was showing a video to show the boundaries of freedom of speech. The video itself does fall under freedom of speech. He did it knowing that a lot of muslims were going to come to the conference to protest him. So all the violence and insanity was not unexpected.
Stupid Muslims. Guys i really cant understand that, why EU countries and US let Muslims to immigrate? They are just making problems.
Stupid Muslims. Guys i really cant understand that, why EU countries and US let Muslims to immigrate?
labour force
labour force
That's Polaks and Mexicans respectively. The problem I see with Muslim rage is that it makes other immigrants look terrible. The people who immigrate to 1st world countries to have better life for themselves and their families.
i don't know why you think that's funny, that's the reason for all immigration other than asylum seekers and tourism. unless people think their government is importing muslims to fuck with them in which case they're probably stupid

(Okay thisisspain, point taken, we do NEED it, but do we get it?) We need the jobs for ourselves as well. We're not even importing labor/labour, were importing grant recipients. A newcomer immigrant mother with three children get: 21 810 SEK/month which is about the normal wage for someone working. They do not have to tax this. Beyond that the immigrant is entitled to: 259 200 SEK in retroactive parental grants. The pace of which this is paid is decided by the immigrant. And finally they are entitled to 12 000 SEK for finishing a course called "Swedish for beginners" this final grant I do not find too steep really, but I doubt it motivates them. To clarify I am aware that immigrants often DO need these grants, but more than often they cheat the system in various ways.

...Wow.
"whiteguyforreal"
Christianity and Islam are equally bullshit ways of bending people to your will and do things "for the will of God". They shouldn't even be counted as religion.
...Wow.
No amnesty, no asylum, no islam to the west, FINAL DESTINATION!
Dumb people like those in the video are exactly the kind of people that ruin the reputation of all middle-easterners. My parents came to Sweden and the moment they got out they no longer had to pretend to give a damn about islam. We are like any other Swedish family except that we have roots in the middle-east.
I'm interested in seeing the rest of the video that everyone was raging over. It looked hilarious, especially with that music in the background.
Never quite understood Islam's tolerances. We let them build mosques here, but we can't build churches in their country? Does Freedom of Speech to them mean as much as Copyright Infringement to the chinese?
Thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat's Sweden!
yo i don't think you understand all of the stuff he does is to show how important freedom of speech is
Yeah, feeding hatred and islamophobia is a great way of doing that. The only thing he does is provoking muslims to the point that the general public takes notices and then hides behind free speech. And by only targeting muslims and attending shit like the SION conference there is no way in hell I'm going to believe he is doing it to defend free speech.
This presentation was a part of the seminar held by Swedish artist Lars Vilks (you might know him for his drawings of Muhammed from 2007) at Uppsala Universitet in 2010. Prior to the seminar Vilks had generated a lot of hatred from most Muslim fundamentalists and that is probably the reason why they all gathered to the seminar; to spew hatred on Vilks and his creations. That is also probably the reason for the amount of cops on the location. Here's some of the controversial drawings of Muhammed: I think, if I'm not mistaken, that Vilks made the drawings as a way to show the boundary of free speech as an argument against religious fundamentalism and extremism. [editline]21st October 2012[/editline] I don't know very much about the whole Vilks drama/situation, but hopefully I made some things a bit more clear. Here's some info on the lecture day from wiki
Sure, but at some point people will use this to poke them into this kind of behaviour to prove their point, and then excuse themselves in the name of "art" and "free speech". Every Muslim, either extremist or not will feel deeply offended by this. Even if, to the western civilization, joking about Christianity is nothing in particular, we, as the supposed tolerant and respectful society should be the first ones to recognize and respect the depths of the religion in question and to stop joking in public about things that don't mean nothing to us, but have deeply spiritual connections with other people. Even if it surpasses our grasp. I don't think this was correct and also liberty of speech as any other liberty should stop when it threatens the liberty of others, or in this case, offending someone at a deep level. Cause frankly, we have no right to offend muslims just because they don't view things the way we consider normal, And frankly, I don't think crowding random muslims in a room showing them naked people with mohameds face photoshoped in it proves any point or does any good to art. It's just publicity over fake and fabricated controversy, and that's just a huge disgusting fallacy.

THEY CHOSE TO BE THERE. And whether it's art or not is for the OBSERVER to decide, I don't find this to be art, but arguing it doesn't fall under freedom of speech is foolish, as others have said in this thread. We have the right to offend anyone in any way, it doesn't mean that the people doing it aren't bloody morons, but they STILL have the RIGHT to do so. Not that freedom of speech isn't already quite bashed, saying that you do not believe in the holocaust is a crime, again I am not arguing that people thinking this aren't morons, but it's practically the real life version of 1984's thought crimes.
What a surprise, muslims acting like brainless retards
It has nothing to do with skin colour, it's all about culture and their culture is fucked. FUCKED BEYOND BELIEF. This video is a problem too common in all western countries, you see it everywhere, even at the arse end of the world... Australia. So much hate, so much violence... it sickens me.
I don't care if it's against your beliefs. That is such a fucking overreaction. I know plenty of people from different religions, races, and moral values. And not a single one would bat an eyelid at something like a film disrespecting their ways. People need to stop taking shit so seriously.
